Buy one of these devices



You plug it into your guitar and then connect your headphones to it. There are different versions, each recreating a different guitar tone. The good thing about it is you can practice without disturbing anybody else. Plus it's neat and tidy.

How practical is this? I have the money for an amp but if I don't need it since I already have monitors then I guess it would be smarter just getting an i/o device.

That software is $100. Along with an i/o device which is like $200. Would it just be better buying a $300 amp instead for the simplicity?

Any amp for $300 will be trash tbh. Plus that's the amp as is, no pedals or anything. You can get a million different tones and effects with the software.

Okay I know exactly what you are saying now. I will look further into this. You said you personally got rid of your amps for this solution? Is there a free version of the software without all the bells and whistles? Insightful posts. Thanks man.

Vox Pathfinder 10 (15 watt combination)


Costed me around 800 dollars. Sounds fine for what I want - I was also gifted an RP360 XP pedal for effects and pre-sets (runs about $200). Was about to say that amps suck unless you're spending a chit ton on them, but another brah already pointed that out.

For amps I would recommend the Yamaha THR 10. It comes with built in effects, the yamaha THR editor software which allows you to download patches (pre-made effects settings modeled after songs), and it comes with Cubase recording software. It's so good i bought 2 (THR10c and THR10x). It can be portable and run off batteries, it has aux in for backing tracks or just playing music through. It has a built in tuner. It is the ultimate bedroom amp. It looks badass too.

Another tip, I am to the point where i rarely if ever buy anything new. The used market for musical gear is so good you can find some really great deals if you bother to look.

My question is how would you control certain expressions with that?

For instance on a wah pedal.

Do midi controllers exist for that?

If you're not planning on playing live any time soon then get studio monitors and a good multi effects pedal.. It's cheaper and sounds way better if you just practice/play in your room. I have jbl sr308s and a Line 6 Pod hd500x, can record some legit professional sounds and sounds so hnnng, better than any amp will sound in a room.. If you want to play outside though that's a different story..

As for guitar, imo the best you can get for around 500 is Schecter..

I am just going to be playing at home so yeah this makes sense. What interface system do you recommend? The one you listed is $500 which seems like a lot.

OP, the BIAS FX is good like others mentioned but I don't think it will necessarily be good for you for starters. Youll need an interface as mentioned and to make things easier, a DAW as well for recording as well as some decent monitors or headphones. Bias is good for the bedroom recorder. Getting a regular amp will be less hassle so unless youre trying to record and / or know about recording, get a regular guitar amp.

I know when I was starting out, I just wanted to play songs from my favorite bands and a guitar and amp allowed me to do that easily. Like someone suggested in the beginning of the thread, a Line 6 spider would be best or something similar. Where as with the BIAS, you gotta turn on your fukn computer or ipad, whatever you have, make sure your i/os are set up and then hope it sounds decent with the patch you uploaded. Also, there wont be any loudness unless you have a power amp compared to a real amp just incase you want to play loud.


Source: I own bias fx pro, plus other software like it, plus modeling pre amps plus real guitar amps.

Yeah man I just want a simple solution. Just plug and play. Not looking to record or have any special effects. Want to eventually play music like this.

You don't have to get an expensive interface, you're lucky that in 2017 you can get amazing sounds with a cheap usb interface and virtual effects.. I haven't used them in years but I had a chitty line 6 ux1 running Gearbox on my pc (I think it's discontinued now).. But I see a lot of youtuber guitarists use bias fx these days and you can't tell that it's virtual effects just by listening to them cause it sounds so good.

If you prefer an actual pedal (like me) there are cheaper options than the pod 500x, like the pod300 or 400 (you can find them used for cheaper).. I heard Boss makes good multi effects pedals too but personally I never used them..

I already have a pair of JBL 305s. I really like it for watching movies and listening to music. If I don't need a separate amp then that is just a bonus. Will be just be playing at home too. So I don't need a portable solution.

Cool man.. Get Guitar Pro asap, best software you can get, i would have quit if I didn't have it.. Also watch and learn every technique from youtube correctly from the start, I was fuking around first few years of playing and developed some real bad habits.. and last tip, when you get your guitar make sure it's set up correctly, just ask the guitar technician in your music store.. Usually more expensive guitars come set up but not all.

Boyo, the only Schecter worth the money is a Banshee, C-1/7, or KM-6/7. Damiens are gaudy as fuk and super ugly, IMO.

This.. don't get an amp, or especially a nice amp setup unless you're going to be playing in public. Nice guitar, preamp and peripherals to PC with some good headphones.

Hrmmm back to more research I guess. I have a pretty good idea of what guitar I want now but feel overwhelmed with what kind of i/o device I need. I just need something simple. Simpler the better to hook up to my monitors. I also have a pair of sennheiser hd800 headphones which I will probably using half the time due to noise/neighbors. So I need something with a 1/4 output and dual rca outs. Rather not mess with xlr cables because I would have to go out and buy them vs using the cables I already have.

If you have a decent budget then xlr to whatever adapters will probably be nice to just have anyway. They're not expensive.

Just get you an interface and a 3/4 to 3/4 wire (make sure to get one that's long enough) to plug from guitar to interface.

Might also want one end to have an L shaped plug as I've heard them straight ones can **** up the jack on the guitar.

Everything else you need comes with the interface, and I'm imagining your headphones are good enough (Sennheiser's a legit brand).

wtf fight me kunt, the damien is amazing for the price, sounds and plays better than most 1000 euro guitars I tried at the store.. You just can't have pussy fingers for the fretboard cause it has a thick ass neck

Alright guys sounds good. I will look into an interface device since I already have everything else (monitors/headphones/computer). What are some all in one solutions you guys recommend? Someone already threw out a model but that costs $500. Looking for something a lot more affordable.

All in one meaning what?

What I'd do is get an interface then get some sort of amp sim software.

A wire and interface is all the hardware you're gonna need, still gonna need some software.

That's preferred as well, "all-in-one solutions" many times mean a few good things and a bunch of crap.

You're better off getting things that are more dedicated in that regard.

I found that Scarlet 2i2 interface for like $150 online, bet you could find a used one for like $100 or so.

Then after that it's really about software, maybe you can even Jack Sparrow some

I also purchased a copy of Guitar Rig from one of my local Pawn Stores for $15, just saying.

But with a good deal on a guitar and interface, should leave you plenty of money to throw down on amp programs should you need to.

Yeah someone posted that and I was looking at it too. Looks good. It has a direct monitor switch, so does that mean I can just run it directly off the interface device without turning on my computer if I want? I mean I can just power the device via usb but would that not work? I figure the device already has internal drivers.
