Dumb on his part. Do people not have any sort of racial sensitivity or something? Also it seems like its mostly white males...do many have a lack the emotional intelligence that something seemingly innocuous or tongue and cheek could be seen as offensive and out of place / context in certain situations?

He was probably trying to be funny but not the best place to be funny.

Strong first post from me. But it is understandable why the firefighters found the gift offensive . Back when segregation was still around in the USA there were some cartoons depticting African Americans as having huge lips with monkey ears and being lazy only to be motivated to work by eating watermelon.

But little is this know that watermelon was the first fruit that free African Americans would grow and sell . The fruit was seen as a symbol of freedom . Unfortunately these cartoons ruined this image .

Every race and nationality has their own cuisine , such as soul food for the African Americans and southerners which consist of foods such as cornbread, fried chicken and watermelon and many other foods.

Each nationality is unique and have their different foods, music and traditions . It's what makes us all individuals and different , yet that doesn't mean we can't all embrace each others cultures .

Racism used to be about someone hating someone else because of their skin colour but now it's getting to far . The firing of this Detroit man is a good example . Watermelon is tasty as , so is fried chicken and grapefruit. So is sushi, burritos and ribs. every single race and culture have their stereotype food that they eat . We should all be proud of our unique cuisines.

Everyone should speak out against the bad stereotypes of their race and cultures and also embrace the good stereotypes as well and be proud of our differences.

Only then will we defeat racism and truly become a peaceful and multicultural society that embraces each other but also loves their country that they live in and their fellow brothers.

ya I get that the stereotype exists, but it makes no sense anymore. The primary consumers of watermelon in america are white people. It may be the case that a larger percentage of black ppl eat watermelon than others, but I have yet to see that data, and I highly doubt that is the case. Given the relationship of wealth to race, I would argue mcdonalds would be a better phucking stereotype. The fried chicken stereotype is also retarded. KFC/popeyes are expensive compared to most other fast foods. Growing up my dad made like six fig a year and he would still yell at me if I ever had the nerve to ask for kfc. While fried chicken has been a staple in southern food, it is again mostly a white people thing.

These are outdated and ridiculous stereotypes that don't even make any sense anymore, and might never have made sense to begin with. They were just spread to mock and oppress black people and to push an agenda. Such a phucking joke.

Judging by this thread and by the people that were actually there it received mixed reactions. So there's obviously people of color who don't give a chit. There's a difference of opinion on this clearly.

It would certainly be nice to not have entire classes of food off the table because some men have 500% normal estrogen levels and low test.
