Serious question

Would you get offended if it didn't have a bow and he knew the people and they were his friends?
Like if he were obviously making a joke about the black people love watermelon thing?

I think it is either racist OR he's retarded because of the bow thing and it was his first day...other than that if I did that to my black friends I'd expect them to probably laugh at it

I'd think it was funny if the tables were turned. Then again, white privilege and I've never been oppressed so of course I wouldn't get offended right?

Being sarcastic, but luckily I haven't been oppressed so there's that.

I still think too many people are acting retarded when it comes to the race issue. People always want to think the worst of someone.

Working as a firefighter currently, I think it was originally a joke. Could be because the crew is black or because of the fire/water contrast. Firefightersusedto joke all the time. I think he was under the impression he was just busting some balls while bringing in some delicious fruit.

I made a female firefighter break down into tears and cry when I joked about how the department physical fitness test isn't that hard because she passed. This was while we were all sitting around busting balls. Later I told my Capt. to cover my own ass and he just rolled his eyes and laughed. I went to school for fire protection and my instructor repeatedly warned us that the culture of the fire service had changed with the inclusion of women and minorities and that it was best to show up, shut up and go home.

Personal friends I don't care about race humor. I do the same to friends and they do it with me to a degree... with some respect ya know?

In a professional setting that does not fly though. You can only feign ignorance so much and if you go through racial discrimination / sexual harassment courses it only takes one person for the act to be deemed as offensive. What's OK for one person may not be okay for someone else.

You misunderstand. He didn't say it was bad or good just that it had changed. Things that may have appeared acceptable were no longer acceptable because the variety of perspectives had broadened. It is now more appropriate to keep things to yourself rather than risk offending someone. Maybe I should have been more clear or you should be less sensitive.

Explaining to people the culture of a career field has changed and some things are no longer appropriate =/= offensive. Now that certain career fields that were traditionally dominated by one group have opened up to others certain behavior might be perceived differently.
