I took out interest free loans. There was a rich guy that created a benefit to help people in the community get an education and fund other public works. They even offer once a year to pay about 3% interest in the opposite direction to pay it back in full. Not mad at that.

Thank christ I paid that off a couple years ago. If you pay the minimum you will be stuck with for life. Should be priority number one.

See people I graduated still struggling 10 years down the road because the first time they got real playing job post graduate they just blew money on new cars and vacations.

Where did you find an organization that offers interest free loans?

high school had a career/college services department that worked on hooking kids up with scholarships and foundations.

In retrospect, my high school was probably pretty good compared to the average. We had most A.P. classes offered, CAD classes, wood shop, machine shop, robotics, etc.

Damn, most high schools should have that. Do you remember what the name of the organization you went with was?

The thing about college, and especially grad school, is that if you’re meant to be going there, either the school or your employer will be paying a good amount for you to be there

If I didn’t get at least a tuition scholarship in-state no way would I have taken out loans to go. At that point it would be more beneficial to learn a trade or join the military unless you had the HS background for STEM, and if that was the case you’d probably have at least tuition covered via scholarship anyway. College isn’t for everyone

One thing I'm glad I never had to do. Got an internship right out of HS which started my career in IT. Went to community college on and off for 6 years just to get my associates. All my knowledge came from on the job training and now I'm a Linux Sys Admin. Certs are worth more in the IT world. I feel for the brahs who have large student loan debt. Hope you all get it paid off ASAP

This but it requires people to be more active and get out of this "Must have a degree straight away from college" mindset. Meanwhile so many graduate holding some paperweight degree, huge debt, zero experience, and wonder why they aren't landing a dream job. If you're going to have a huge student loan, make sure it's at least for a degree that means something and not some redundant glorified highschool degree.

I agree 100%. I never bought into it and it's worked out for me. Most people just don't know there are other options out there I guess.

I took out 11K @ 1% compounded once annually, pretty much as good as it gets. That 11K was from my state gov't, and was only offered to those taking STEM degrees at the state's top universities. I only make minimum payments on it.Also took out 25K ranging anywhere from 3.25% to 6.5% (subsidized) from the feds. Any extra money for loans goes straight to the 6.5%'er

Started at 36K, down to like 26K now, in like 3 years of payments. Also paid 14K on my car note, 4K of furniture, and a 28K wedding in that time, and have now saved 24K for a down-payment.

So all in all, it's kind of fooking me cause I could have paid my car off and have a lot more monthly income. But definitely worth it.

It's one of those things that you think will happen way later in life but all of a sudden college is over and you're stuck with those loans.

Amazed people still go the college route if they have to take out 50k+ in loans for undergrad. Going into that much debt for medical or dental school I can understand but there are kids taking out 100k in loans to study philosophy and visual arts at a top university. Is there no one older and wiser about finances telling them it’s a bad investment?

No but that's probably because I worked my way through my four year, I only ended up with $25K which is pretty reasonable in my opinion.

Noone gets fuked by student debt it is a self inflicted wound that is made by to many idiots that make horrible life choices not knowing what direction to go in life.. no offense but I have no empathy for people buried in student debt

Only reason schools charge so much is because there is to many idiots to pay that much../thread

Unfortunately old timers think you should get a degree at any cost or you'll fail at life, so they push their kids into it. It's an outdated way of thinking. Doesn't help that basic personal finance isn't taught in high school.

Unless you are going to a top tier school with financial help you should never spend 50k on an undergrad degree.

My wife got a full ride and I went to a community college so no student loan debt here.

A co-worker however took out 70k for his wife to go to nursing school because they wanted extra to live on while she went to school then deferred it for 3 years until they were forced to begin paying on it and now they're only paying the forced interest payments.... disaster

Everyone shouldn't be pre-approved to get loans. This is the government trapping all students to make more money. Yes in theory it sounds like smart business but it also stunts the growth of our future.

It probably also weeds out the idiotic weaklings and the smarter kids rise up because they make better decisions.

Fuggit. I had financial aid and never took out loans.
