The only "session" player who I can remember making it big and making timeless original music is Jimmy Page, and most people say that he is sloppy with Led Zep too. Jimi actually was a session player at one point in his career also. Just because everybody can do now what he did then, doesn't make him overrated. It's the same with the Beatles. They sound bland because most everything after them is derivative of their sound. To really appreciate what Jimi or the Beatles did, you have to compare them to what came before them, not after.

none of the above guitarists cared about practicing, staying 'clean", etc. they just playe whatever. and sometimes it was sloppy, and incomplete, and repetitive. but when it was good, it was PHUKKING GOOD.

And then you have people like
-Eric Johnson
-80's shred guitarists
-john petrucci

Who were more methodical players that seriously worked on their songs, practice routines/etc, and sounded far more polished than the above players, however, if you compare the best moments from each group, I would say the partiers win.
I'd personally rather listen to the former 3, rather than the latter.

Classical is on a league of its own imo... A lot of jazz is wankery just like metal.. Lots of shredders are just playing jazz fusion but with distortion, seems like they just want to use weird ass chords and timings..

But classical has a lot of focus on melody as well as technique, playing chit like Francisco Tarrega, Roland Dyens or Paco de Lucio takes decades of dedication..

Like I said before bro that is your opinion. Musical snobs always get their panties in a twist over this ****. You believe your opinion is superior because you play the instrument blah blah blah nobody cares

At the end of the day if his music doesn't hit a wide audience that appreciates it then he isn't great

End of story

It's like saying there might be a musical genius playing in his basement somewhere lol

Most metal is classically based and generally more technical than traditional classical music. Jazz is a toss up, theyre honestly on par.

again youre mixing up being great at guitar with being a successful musician. By that logic lil wayne is a great guitarist.

So you are telling me that someone can be an excellent guitarist but the music he plays wont appeal to anyone?

what do you mean metal is classicaly based?

theres a vid of chris broderick playing bach, and its downright horrible considering he studied classical, even Randy Rhoads was not great at classical guitar, people like to extrapolate and say 'x guitarist is classicaly influenced' because they took a few lessons

my bad, i meant jazz fusion not jazz,

majority of metal guitarist do not play odd groupings, time signatures, traverse the strings instead of playing 2-3 note per string licks, the only ones that do are in prog metal or guys like Tosin

if we are purely talking about technical skill, then its Shawn Lane, I'm sure we would both agree
as for musicianship, thats more of a personal thing

He has been dead 47 years OP.

He hasn't created anything in 47yrs and here you are talking about what he did create.

That speaks for itself. My opinion isn't even needed.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

yes, playing an instrument is a physical skill, not an emotional one
i dont know why people have such trouble divorcing skill from musicianship

otherwise noel gallagher>eric johnson at guitar
when thats clearly not the case

I'll be honest, when I made this thread I simply went for the most inflammatory topic I could think of.

Because the skill of playing the instrument is derived from the sound it makes?

idk how you can sit here and say that someone can be an amazing guitar player if anything he plays sounds like **** to everyone

Isn't the end goal of being skilled as a guitarist to lead to sound that appeases the ears?

Do you just judge skill by the movements of his fingers then?

Music literally is quantified into gradings as a display of skill. Grades 1 through to 8, at least in the UK and Europe (not sure about the US)

That's why I posted the dude from Dissection. He had the best riffs ever musically IMO even though he isn't the most technically skilled.

Also, listen to these songs by virtuosos who never enjoyed mass appeal, and tell me they are not musically talented. They have technical talent, and musical talent. Sure, some people just shred, but there are also examples of great, emotionally moving music.

Aint' this kinda like saying Lebron would destroy Dr. J 1-on-1.

Nobody doubts that but Lebron built his game off Dr. J's, so many musicians ITT were inspired by Hendrix.

The fact is compare anybody doing anything to people doing it 50 years ago, they're generally gonna get washed because everything has advanced.

I think as some have stated ITT a lot has to do with how ahead of your time, and how timeless your music is.

Not related to guitar gods but I was listening to 'Dream On' yesterday and just thinking- song makes me wanna run through a wall in 2017, imagine how mindblowing it was back in 1973.

Exactly. Hendrix was a legend in his time, and a pioneer.

Progressive and tech death is mainly what i was getting at. Im a pretty big guitar nerd so that stuff has always appealed to me. Also yeah shawn lane was next level skill wise but tbh i cant stand his work. Its too by the book and theres nothing interesting. Its just scales upon scales. IMO the best overall player now a days is Guthrie.

Heres a few examples of classically based metal. Obscura being my favorite because they do it different than everyone else and when you look up what goes into their songs its borderline infuriating to learn.

Yes thats exactly what im saying. Pop music is not about being good at guitar, its not about being good at anything. Its about being catchy. Why do you think everything is in a major key, doesnt take any risks, and is themed around sex drugs and partying? Theres no musical substance in 90% of mainstream modern acts. Any musical instrument is like mastering a craft and its about surpassing physical bounderies and learning the instrument to the point you can think of something and play it, you dont have to sit there and figure it out its just an extension of yourself. The more skilled the guitar player the less limitted he is in expressing his ideas. Being well known doesnt make you good at anything, it makes you well known. For instance. Kurt Cobain is well known, arguably one of the most famous modern musicians. He sucked dick at the guitar. You could pick up a guitar and realistically play any song he ever wrote within about 6 months of playing. Hendrix got good enough to get his point across. He put on a good show and played a different style than the other people around him so he stood out. He was by no means a great guitar player. He was widely accepted and a great rock star but thats about it.

surprised that we are 4 pages in and no one has mentioned the song wind cries Mary. One of the reason Jimi Hendrix was refereed to as a musical genius is he can create on the spot, for instance the song the wind cries Mary, Hendrix showed the band that song he made and within 20 mins of showing his band the song for the first time they recorded a hit that even today is still considered an iconic song for many guitarist.

don't know how many artists can do the same thing, recording a hit on the spot in 20 mins
