In retrospect, I wish I'd bought the tools to build an AR in the first place. Putting them together was actually pretty fun, and I'm probably not going to build any more. Sad.

Thanks guys. Already back home, my hunting partner for the day had to work so we packed it in about 8:30am, birds were pretty much done flying by then anyway.

Didn't do great got two mallards knocked another down and couldn't find it and a goose that I winged and another guy further over in the lake got. Was really warm wearing chest waders when it's 70 degrees. Was shooting steel #2s but had T shot too for geese. Shooting Beretta A300 pretty well though. Didn't have many birds looking at the decoys it was mostly passing shots. Missed a few wood ducks that went zipping over us silently right at dawn. Might hit it again tomorrow. No migratory birds are here yet, it's all local birds. Some guys got a lot of shooting though, sounded like a ware zone around 7am.

I dunno if you'll find a scope that can do both 10 yards and 500 yards adequately. Better off getting a distance scope and a 1x one in quick detach mounts.

On the topic of light weight AR .308 though, Wilson Combat just released a series of insanely cool rofles, around 7lb empty.

.300BLK pistol build is the obvious next step, actually a really good apocalypse round if you have a suppressor and plenty of ammo/reloading capability. Super quiet 230gr subsonic but with a ballistic coefficient far superior to .45acp and a supersonic .30 caliber round that rivals the 7.62x39 with just the change of a magazine.

I don't think a rare, niche cartridge only serious enthusiasts have even heard of could ever qualify as an apocalypse round. Ammo availability is a pretty huge factor there, and by definition you can't plan on staying at your current location and manufacturing ammo indefinitely duruing the apocalypse
