I have worked for the Federal Government for the past 5 years as a security diplomat, and for 3 years prior to that as a contractor through the D.o.D....I will say labeling the government as a whole and not its branches and departments is like stereo typing people by their colors. There are bad sectors that are out for money, there are neutral parts that are 50/50, and then there are good sectors that are more concerned about diplomacy, functionality, citizens abroad, and building relationships. I was stationed in the middle east for the majority of the time, between Iraq and Afghanistan and briefly Syria at the end, I came to the conclusion relatively fast that we are there for money and alliances to make money. I followed this thought process for around 2 years until I saw first hand how much we do aid and help random people, villages, and cities. It opened up my eyes and made me very curious, as we do not usually take pay for clearing roads, rescuing civilians, and helping villages under fire. It interested me so much that I started studying more about government economics and policies abroad. After my three years I laterally transferred, still went through the application and hiring process, to the State department where I was able to continue my security duties, and get a first hand look into the consulate, Americans abroad, and Embassies. What I learned is that the US goes way out of its way to help protect its citizens abroad, build strong relationships in every country aside from a few, help others immigrate, and provide services to military abroad.

Now you may say "big FOOKING deal mate" but it really is. See, look at it this way; the US has around 13,000 diplomats around the world, of those you add around 24,000 American Family members posted with them, you also have around 40-45,000 Foreign nationals who help run and work in each embassy. These US Diplomats make anywhere between 65,000 to 200,000 USD a year to perform the essential duties, along with fully paid housing. The Diplomatic family children are placed in international schools, which cost between 5-50,000 USD a year (roughly). With foreign nationals, they make between 20-65,000 USD a year depending on position. These numbers add up fast and are costly. Now within these embassies there are obligatory events and parties that must be had or attended which we will say are budgeted 50-70,000 USD per year per embassy. After these you must account for buildings that are being constructed yearly and usually cost in the millions.

Now lets move onto the D.o.D. They employ roughly 1.3 million troops who pay ranges from 23-184,000 USD a year. The D.o.D is constantly spending money to build camps, bases, and procure all necessities from vehicles to weapons. On these bases the D.o.D employs between 16,000 to 70,000 foreign nationals, depending on war status, that make anywhere between 18-109,000 USD per year. each of these bases uses power, water, land, and other costs that must be factored in. The D.o.D, along with other entities supplies many foreign citizens with essential supplies in times of need.

Now if you add up these foreign costs the State Departments budgets around 50 Billion USD a year and the D.o.D budgets roughly 611 Billion USD a year in order to operate. Now, this is just examples of two entities that operate abroad and total around 661 Billion dollars a year to operate. There are still the close to 3 million civil servants to account for, not including the FBI, and CIA. So when you say the government only cares about money, you are correct, but don't look at it as a bad thing, look at it as a necessary spending plan for the most part.Without most of the Government sectors US citizens wouldn't be able to travel freely and safely, our borders and other countries wouldnt have the safety net, we would not have strong bonds with other countries, and our Democratic government would not be able to function. There is a lot more to it, I just wanted to give you a sample, a very small sample, of why the Government may seem like it only cares of money.

I will say your daughter does seem to have her priorities straight. I would quit my job in a heart beat for my family and friends, no amount of money can compensate for them in life!

Also it makes no sense to me to outlaw things that aren't harmful to yourself or anyone around you. A lot of our laws are based purely on how much money they can make from arresting people.

The punishment for something should never cause more harm than the offense... especially when the only "crime" was breaking the law.
