Who really cares about this mathematics stuff anyway? I have news for you: all numbers are made up.

There is really no 1 or 2 or 3. Someone at some point decided to call something 2 and something 3 and that 2 + 3 = 5. They could have just as easy defined it as 2 + 3 = 4 in which case 2 + 2 = 5 and so on.

Bottom line is this chit is all made up so why should I or anyone else care about studying it?

This is a homework solution from MIT's course page, pretty similar to what our assignments looked like.

Thats real similar to most prob and stats courses for engineers. IT was pretty fukking hard. I took it after dif eq/calc 3/linear algebra and it still sucked.

Calc II was worse IMO.

Because it is useful

We invent the definitions, but the relationships are discovered, and they happen to be very useful for this other field of human knowledge known as physics, where we attempt to model and predict the behavior of the universe so that we can better dominate it rather than being beta twinks getting bottomed out by GAAAAAAAWDDDDDD

That's exactly what I'm saying. If we didn't define these twinks as have a singular butthole, we could have been dominating double or even triple buttholed twinks a lot more efficiently.

This is complete bullchit. Yeah, you need to follow the rules of inference. However, math has this issue which involves combinatorially explosive numbers of possible ways to approach a logical proof. So, yes, there are only a few rules to follow, but the number of possibilities becomes absurdly large. You require genuine creativity and intelligence to cleverly narrow down the possible approaches to proving some statement. Many mathematicians struggle to prove conjectures whose ramifications even are poorly understood. These people are literally expanding the boundaries of human knowledge of math. There is no simple algorithm they can follow to make progress in their research. It requires a great deal of intelligence and creativity to make progress there.

not really math but doing P!=NP proofs in Intractability and Analytics of Algorithms

That one class was more difficult than the rest of my education combined

oddly enough , Calc2 was harder than calc1, 3, and linear algebra for me. Most people in the program say calc2 is the easiest of the 4

3rd yr civil eng checking in

I don't necessarily find any of the math hard, you slowly build up over the years and it's just a thing you do. With that being said, once math got into 3 dimensions it got a lil tough to wrap the head around what was going on. Although, a lot of the math I'm doing right now isn't hard per se .. you're given like 10 pages of formula sheets and it's just picking out the formula you need and then next question, lol.

u cant be srs bro lol

math has been building exponentially...the ancient egyptians had no notion of even the most basic ideas required to attack research problems in algebraic geometry for example...

there is nobody to copy from...you know how all cucks copy their hw from some dude? At some point some brah had to be smart enough to actually do it. Physicists apply their models, but really it was some smart dude who worked out all the details behind the scenes. Yeah those guys are the mathematicians. They really are the smartest people on the planet, and the buck stops with them.

I didn't have to take beyond Calc 2, but I disliked integrals. Though I didn't do my homework or practice much during that class so maybe it would have been easier if I worked at it. Differentials I thought were pretty easy.

Integrals are just backwards differentials, you're just finding the area under the curve... more intuitive, not less, for most of my students.

Pretty sure egyptians knew about algebra and geometry or else how would they build those pyramids?

I'm not saying knowledge isn't accumulative or incremental, but what I'm saying is maybe if we stopped copying all these math (which was made up anyway) from those ancients maybe we would focus more on larger increments of advancement instead of this snail pace we're on at the moment.

Your bring up the example of physicist working on models which are mathematical by it's nature, but again those maths came from the same numbers which were made up by the last guy who copied them, so really it's not being very honest with the physicists is it? A lot of assumptions being made and one weak link in the chain could bring it all down.

Wtf... trying to have a civil discussion here, what's with all the insults?

You seem to be stuck in the past man. Symbols are useful to a degree, but they're just that... symbols. We need to streamline mathematics for the future of mankind instead of getting stuck on talking about if 2 is really 2 or if it could be 3 or if 2 + 2 = 5 or whatever.

Dassit. Plus it's pretty obvious that 1 tittie on #2 is fake anyway cause, well... I'll try to explain it using a visual aide:

Math is brutal if you have a chitty teacher. I swear when i was going through school...

Good teacher = Ace any test without trying
Bad teacher = Da fuk is going on

It's one of those things that if the teacher doesn't show the steps in a well thought out order ... or if you fall asleep and miss an important step ... it can screw you for the rest of the class. I remember moving Junior year in high school and they completely skipped trigonometry on me and tossed me into calculus ... dear lord i was so lost.

I don't know, but I studied physics up through quantum mechanics and relativity and somehow never learned the terms.
