I just got out of a 5+ year relationship and I'll tell you, you never know. Another girl a long time ago, was with her 3 years and I thought everything was perfect and then poof. I've also seen too many guys wrecked by divorce. Like one dude I know, he was like a mentor to me, but he was really good to his wife, she had the life. One day, new years day, she just left him and the reason was "we are different people". She even said later that he didn't do anything wrong, and was good to her, but she just wasn't happy. If she found happiness away from him she sure has a talent of making it look like mysery. Truth is it wasn't him, it was that she wasn't happy with herself.
Fact is that the factors for a marriage to work and be happy are very small. I think the foundation is trust, honesty, and communication, but that is just the foundation, you have the rest of the house to build. It doesn't have to be perfect but it's got to hold together. You've got to understand that your partner isn't going to be perfect, and you aren't always going to agree, but you have to work it out.
My ex, it was financial that caused all the problems. She was just bad with money. I wouldn't mind helping her out but she would get paid and then go blow it on stupid crap until she was broke long before she was getting paid again. She was needy otherwise, and it seemed like she went from one crisis to another. I could deal with it, but it drained me both financially and drained my energy until I was depressed and not the same person. I didn't get mad at her exactly, but just was drained all of the time. I can't say I'm perfect, but damn. Since we broke up my life has improved so much, hers not so much. She is on a serious Coping tour.
