225 is the standard for lifting heavy in the public's eye. 300+ is club based and so on.

The place I lift, I feel like the only guy going under 225. It's a strongman gym though with atlas stones, all that. I signed up there because they have about 10 squat/deadlift racks that are always open lol.

Yup. Seems normal to me. Most people at my gym couldn't bench 225, not that they aren't strong enough. Everyone can train to bench 225 easily, but the problem is most people and the average gym-joe don't have the discipline to follow a strict training routine.

Also why you see random people show up right after New Year's, they made resolutions to make gains but we all know that they are only going to last a few weeks then quit.

Been lifting 7 years I only bench 225 for 3-5 chitty reps. I actually stopped my squat and deadlift at 415/520 just because my bench is so pathetic and Im sick of it

I don't dead at all, but I'd be more than happy with your squat numbers. It's just not in the cards for me. Too many injuries from the military and former profession.

Very rare to see someone doing it

I see people lifting all the time and they seem dedicated, but no gains?

Is this the norm?
People lie online about how much they can lift.

I'm in a few gyms. One is mh local YMCA, I see maybe 3-4 people who rep 225, most are prison guards who are pretty brolic. I was doing sets with 275 today and people literally told me they've never seen someone bench that much IRL lol.

The other gym I go to is filled with powerlifters and amateur bbers/ physique competitors (among average joes). There I would say 40-50% can rep 225+ easily.

Definitely depends on gym and area. My area is FILLED with prison guards (who all lift) and a lot of power lifters. I'm from PA and wrestling is big here so I think a lot of wrestlers end up getting into power lifting too. I also live in a very small area, so a lot of the lifters/bbers come together

Most people dont really lift. 225 is kindaimpressive if you rep it 15+ times.

about 80% of lifters I see don't get anywhere near their chest. Of the 20% that do proper rom maybe 1-2 are doing 200lb+. The rest I don't care if its 275lb+, arm extensions are arm extensions

If you are remotely dedicated and athletic then you should be able to rep out 225. However, the average person is a lazy kunt and just goes in there to talk and go thru the motions. But it's still not rare, rare is 315+

I have always prefered dbs. Nice lift though, i wish my gym went above 120s, got those for 10 goid reps the other week, pretty stoked, if only my bb was as good.

Depends on they gym. Of the morning crew only the girls can't at my current gym.

Other gyms my 345 was near the top.

If only 4 people can do 225 plus you should stop lifting at planet fitness. Easy mark to reach.

I did 315 after 3 years of lifting. No gear. I was 240 at 6'1" though

I think they are a lot closer (BB/DB) than people think. I compete in PL and am fine just doing DB's up until 8 weeks or so before a meet. If you're just doing BB, over the long term it will mess with your shoulders IMO.

Those 125's x 4 equated to a 335 BB single.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Those crappy head adjustable skinny benches are the worst thing to do heavy DB presses on. Kudos though.

Your BB should always be better than DB. Closed Chain activity vs open chain.

IF you primarily train DB BB is usually about equal. However, if you are trained BB there is a pretty big gap.

It's about optimal positioning to recruit as many muscles as possible. If I could arch like that and bench a ton more, I would. That's just not how it works.

I am also willing to bet those 225lb female "arch" benchers could lay flat on the bench and larsen press 135 for reps. Most played out discussion there is... aside from maybe comparing geared pl squats to high bar olympic squats.
I disagree with you. More muscles are activated, body is tighter, shorter range of motion, etc. My 1RM on the bench goes up by about 30lbs when I get in a PL arch. When I lifted for strength that's how I always trained. I don't feel like it really developed my pecs adequately though. And I'd typically get a charley horse in the back muscles due to them being flexed that tight for an extended period of time.

If it wasn't the most efficient way to bench heavy weight nobody would be doing it. I do think its the safest way to bench (for the shoulders especially).

i go to a commercial gym but for some reason there's an insane amount of really strong and big dudes. see my stats, and i'd put myself at the mid/upper range. i definitely don't pass as anywhere near the top of my gym
bench - 320 x 1

squat - 360 x 1

It is the most efficient way. So why is performing the bench press in the most efficient and safest way (in your words) considered cheating or less impressive? If no leg drive, zero tightness and completely flat benching is what you wanna see go to any local Y and watch lifters there. I guarantee that the people who arch and perform the bench press recruiting all their muscles will have no problem benching heavy ass weight flat and with no leg drive. If you're a good powerlifter you probably train with variations like that anyway.

Just doesn't make sense to me when people say it's "cheating" or an unfair advantage to put yourself in the most optimal position possible to lift the most weight. If you can contort your body like that and keep your ass and traps on the bench and complete a heavy ass bench press be my guest. Respect because that's fking amazing. 500lbs is 500lbs. Anyone can try it, few can successfully do it. "I could bench press 500lbs if I arched like that"... okay then do it. "Oh I'm not that flexible". K den

My old LA fitness was like this. There was a handful of guys that could rep 405. The one I go to now is a joke. Most I’ve seen someone do is 365, and it was by a fat guy who came out of the locker room wearing a bench suit, slingshot, and wrist wraps to do it. Lulz were had that day

I’ve been on a consistent gym training for 4 months now , I can easily bench 225 x 10 , the most I’ve benched was 245 and I benched it 5 times, but then again I go to Planet Fitness so I think my numbers are tainted sadly...

I see guys benching 275+ all the time in my gym (including me)....I think a legit gym should have many guys doing that. I will say though, I did have a Gold's gym manager in DC tell me people like the lean look these days over the bulky muscular look so most people and gyms are catering to that look.

i mean my bb isn't atrocious, i just feel like it is way less impressive than the 120s x10. My max is only 325.
