I'm not overly sold on MODUM however I am considering moving a few k into it to just cover my bases on having a piece in the supply chain crypto projects. I see modums use case being quite small realistically compared to waltons but I don't think it can "lose". Supply chain is a clear industry that can benefit from blockchain implementation.

Agreed. Waiting for tech to take over rather than name recognition and pure manipulation.

IRS about to come in dry on you americans

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-1...ains-or-losses

The biggest problem, however, and the reason why the IRS is unlikely to relent is that as the IRS said, it detected a "reporting gap" between the 500,000 virtual currency users Coinbase reported between 2013 and 2015 and the less than 900 bitcoin users reporting gains or losses for each of those years.

That would imply that less than 0.2% of coinbase users bothered to report anything on their tax forms. One can see why the IRS is angry.

And, worse for those who believe they will be able to get away with their cryptoprofits unscathed by Federal Taxes, following last week's hearing, a federal judge is poised to allow a limited investigation into those gains to proceed over the company’s objection that the agency is on “a massive fishing expedition” meant to make itself look tough in the eyes of its critics in Congress, according to Bloomberg.

The IRS just has to subpoena all fiat gateways. Problem solved.

Lmao you cheeky Americans. You only pay taxes on profits right? So technically I can withdraw up to 24k from my portfolio and not have to pay taxes on it?

As soon as you sell at a profit it becomes a taxable event. You can technically hold, and not have to pay taxes. Coinbase is also cracking down on tax evaders btw. About two weeks ago I had to send them proof of where my income was coming from.

this is good for privacy coins, no?

wouldn't that be the best way to cash out tax free gains?
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

Yeah but let's say I've put in 20k, as long as I withdraw an amount less than or equal to 20k then there's no profit, just the initial investment so I shouldn't have to pay tax on that

as long as you never use a centralised exchange which you have to register. else they'll just subpoena records and deem your income.

Privacy coins are only useful if you intend to tumble and cash out in an OTC market like localbitcoins or know a big buyer who will trade for fiat. If you go through a fiat gateway like coinbase, gemini, etc and cash out for usd there will be a paper trail no matter what. I just pay my taxes like a good little goyim. The tax man is usually a couple steps ahead of normies. Good luck explaining how you managed to purchase a porsche when your income tax says you are pulling in 30k a year.

i think IRS counts each buy sell as a taxable event. so if they have your whole trade log, they can deem your profit, even if you dont withdraw

I believe so. Im not a tax professional, but if you ended the year like this in the negative you would declare it as a loss. Here in the U.S. if you hold an asset for a year you get factored into long term capital gains so i believe if you pulled it out at any time prior even if it was a loss, you would have to start over.

Yeah, just sucks calculating that fat chunk that's gonna be taken out if you ever pulled out big time.
