I'll succinctly put it this way, when you meditate consistently, the result is that it feels like nothing ever phases you IRL. I don't know the science behind it but i can only feel the effects. Before, i used to have a tendency to overthink but now im always just trying to be in the present moment, fully. For example, if someone displays an outburst of anger at me, it doesn't knock me off a relaxed and non-judgemental state whereas before i would be affected by their emotions by becoming angry back or i might be intimidated or i might respond with violence etc. But now, it's like i have total control and mastery over my own emotional state to the point where others emotions don't influence me in any way. I am in total control and not being controlled by my primal, emotional side or external factors.
It sort of gives you an extra layer of thinking, like you're able to have a third person monitor how you're feeling at any given moment and that third person is a kind, gentle person who always reminds you to be compassionate.
I can understand why those buddhist monks that meditate for 3+ hours a day literally look like they have absolutely no stress in their lives. Can you imagine harbouring angry and negative feelings at someone like this? I'm guessing most of you said no, meditation taught the buddha to let go of all attachments & expectations and radiate only compassion, kindness and true genuine care for people.

"MRI scans show that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain's “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink. This primal region of the brain, associated with fear and emotion, is involved in the initiation of the body's response to stress."
Some more cool stuff:
Last week, a study from UCLA found that long-term meditators had better-preserved brains than non-meditators as they aged. Participants who’d been meditating for an average of 20 years had more grey matter volume throughout the brain — although older meditators still had some volume loss compared to younger meditators, it wasn’t as pronounced as the non-meditators."
"One of the most interesting studies in the last few years, carried out at Yale University, found that mindfulness meditation decreases activity in the default mode network (DMN), the brain network responsible for mind-wandering and self-referential thoughts – a.k.a., “monkey mind.” The DMN is “on” or active when we’re not thinking about anything in particular, when our minds are just wandering from thought to thought. Since mind-wandering is typically associated with being less happy, ruminating, and worrying about the past and future, it’s the goal for many people to dial it down. And even when the mind does start to wander, because of the new connections that form, meditators are better at snapping back out of it."
"A review study last year at Johns Hopkins looked at the relationship between mindfulness meditation and its ability to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain. Researcher Madhav Goyal and his team found that the effect size of meditation was moderate, at 0.3. If this sounds low, keep in mind that the effect size for antidepressants is also 0.3, which makes the effect of meditation sound pretty good."
"In 2011, Sara Lazar and her team at Harvard found that mindfulness meditation can actually change the structure of the brain: Eight weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and memory, and in certain areas of the brain that play roles in emotion regulation and self-referential processing."
"Interestingly but not surprisingly, one of the central benefits of meditation is that it improves attention and concentration: One recent study found that just a couple of weeks of meditation training helped people’s focus and memory during the verbal reasoning section of the GRE. In fact, the increase in score was equivalent to 16 percentile points, which is nothing to sneeze at."
"Studies have shown its benefits in reducing anxiety, even years after the initial 8-week course. Research has also shown that mindfulness meditation, in contrast to attending to the breath only, can reduce anxiety – and that these changes seem to be mediated through the brain regions associated with those self-referential (“me-centered”) thoughts. Mindfulness meditation has also been shown to help people with social anxiety disorder"

That is the whole point, every time you catch yourself going unconscious and getting dragged into mental stories/images and then snap yourself back to observing awareness you grow stronger, THAT IS THE POINT. You keep doing it and you start spending more time in that beautiful stable calm awareness watching the mind's activity without being dragged into it and losing consciousness and when you do the time you spend there lessens and the degree of unconosciousness lessens.Any guidance for those starting out? Did you just sit in a chair, or what did you do?
Was your concentration as bad as mine starting out, I legit was begging for the timer to be over, and didn't enjoy it at all.

Watch that sensation of impatience (or tiredness, hunger, physical discomfort, pain, etc), observe it impartially. Watch the thoughts surface about how bored you are, if its working or not, etc. All thoughts are the same, the content of them is irrelevant.

Took a 5 minute cold shower, proceeding with a 10 minute meditation session.
I began the session visualizing positive thoughts and feelings with a deep breathe in, followed by a release of negative thoughts and feelings with a heavy breathe out. I did this for roughly 10 breathes.
I found it hard to stay away from my thoughts during the session. It seemed I was always pulling my focus back to my breathe. Every time I did this, it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder and mind. Never realized how calming it is to only focus on your breathe.
After effects of the session included reduced stress and anxiety, and a much more clear head.

Going to turn off all electronics and do this. It's discouraging that I missed a day in which I had the time to meditate. I imagine making excuses will be easier with work

I like to throw the cell out the window (not srs) & turn on sounds of rain faintly for background noise.

As I said before, my longest streak was 131 days. I use Calm to track it and I use the open-ended, unguided meditations. I’ve got 116 hours total logged, with around 600 sessions. Whenever I want a guided one, my favorites are Sam Harris’s meditations (there’s a 9 minute one and a 25 minute one).
I started at barely being able to do 5 minutes and soon reached a point where I could do 20 - 30 mins regularly or even 40 at times. But I took a month off when detoxing from drugs and having zero willpower. Now I’m on day 4, having to start from 10 mins again, lol.
Hard part for me is linking it to a strong enough part of my routine to make it a real habit. Even 100 or so days in (which I’ve done a few times), it never really felt like a habit even though I usually did it right after my morning shower. I actually get the urge to go to the gym and do my cardio, which I used to hate, so I turned that into a habit that maintains itself, but meditating still feels like a chore. Still really worth it though because my jimmies are way less rustled throughout the day and people often comment on how chill I am.
Even just 10 minutes is enough for me to notice a benefit, but whenever I go above 20 minutes, I get that feeling of everything in my mind settling and quieting down big time and I feel like I’m sitting on a cloud.

Already back on the cold shower/meditation wagons, I feel like a tranquilized rhino.

u ****sters even putting in the work or not?
I've felt a lot more calm but I think It's due to starting to fix another health issue that was giving me problems, have been trying to do quick sessions here and there of at least 5 mins. just clearing my mind whenever possible.
so far so good.

Fell to sleep the last couple of days. So not sure how much meditation time I got in before drifting off. Maybe 5 mins tops. I probs shouldn't do it whilst reclined in a joey chair but just feels so damn cosy

I've felt a lot more calm but I think It's due to starting to fix another health issue that was giving me problems, have been trying to do quick sessions here and there of at least 5 mins. just clearing my mind whenever possible.
so far so good.
