Plenty of shortcomings that the dev team has been open about. The solutions are on the roadmap and are actively being developed. The most important solution sharding is at least a year out. Until then, we should have some version of casper, plasma, projects using microRaiden to offset some scaling pains, and interesting EIPs (protocol proposals) that are on the way.
It's the only smart contract system running at scale, decentralized, and in production.
If you run an eth consortium chain you can run similar tps that most of these other coins are promoting, but it doesn't really "count" from an innovation perspective.
