Why is the main emphasis of education...

To make children memorize lots of useless information

Instead of trying to generate genuine interest in children and then helping them learn about it?

Because the smart people learn how to learn at school.

Its not the systems fault that you memorize chit instead of actually learning it. Stop blaming others for your personal failings.

lets look at the facts

1) Pretty much anyone can agree that people are different.
So, different people would require different teaching methods.
Different people would learn at different speeds.
Different people would be good at differet things.
They would have different interesets
and so on

2) Education is standard for everyone.
Testing is standard for everyone.
The standard method might work for some, but for a lot it doesnt

because the whole format is antiquated. we're doing the same chit the greeks did thousands of years ago.

brb read chapter in textbook. discuss chapter in class. do some boring ass paperwork for said chapter. assign next chapter for homework. it worked back then because it beat bent over in the fields or freezing to death in the winter

Over half the chit I learned in school was useless. Some teachers really care and teach you useful chit like personal finance.

Good teachers aim to diversify their teaching style to meet students learning needs.

Good teachers aim to expand students minds so they can not grow up hating their job.

So in reality,

The issue is the teachers that become teachers not the education system. Even myself going through high school only ever looked up to 1 teacher because they were able to do this. Most don't give a **** and just go in for paychecj and holidays.

And unfortunetly this is how the majority of the rest of society is goingn to become. When you become a father in the future it's your goal to teach your kids all those things.

Part of learning is memorizing lots of stuff. You can't apply logic if you don't know what you are applying it to.

A lot of schools are investing in stem workplaces now where kids can actually learn through experiments which is great. More focus on coding as well. I think education will continue to change over the next few years and turn out to be really great - better than any of us ever had it.

Am Chemistry teacher, can confirm.

I *could* go through the textbook and get them to answer questions, OR we could do experiments and then derive/deduce/investigate/question for ourselves, with myself guiding the process.

Yeah I do the latter.
We're all gonna make it.

ok OP the legit real reason here is that you cant quantify what you're talking about.

telling them "memorize this and then do multiple choice so we can send your test scores to the district and thats how funding gets decided etc" is the reality, how do you quantify their desire to learn for funding purposes?

it would be fantastic if we could have a much smarter way of learning, but when you factor in reality and the money, you have to be able to have something tangible for dumb lawmakers to look at and say "ok you need money"

the Common Core system that came to be under obama is probably the worst thing to ever happen to education besides student loans. They dont teach NORMAL multiplication and division anymore. I tutor gradeschool-highschool students (many from expensive private schools) and MANY kids are completely deficient in mathematics.

That being said, memorizing terms and concepts is a necessity in many fields, denying its usefulness is being ignorant to the entire process of learning. But I do understand what OP is trying to say, that the school system covers a lot of unnecessary, unpractical information. I would even argue that most history classes at the gradeschool to highschool level are straight up misinformation.

When teaching math, I find many students uttering "what am I ever going to use this for" when learning many topics in algebra I and algebra II, as if learning it is beneath them. These students are more often than not unable to solve those problems which they already deemed unnecessary for their future, and these students end up failing in areas of life that stress problem solving later on. Why do we learn all these abstract math concepts? To build problem solving skills.

The system simply cant work for everyone. We need gas station workers, fast food workers, and non-academically driven jobs. Those who are driven and have the skills to succeed will ultimately succeed. I have seen many rich parents try and tutor their kids into becoming doctors, but as soon as those kids get off to college/ med school/ are on their own, they will ultimately fail because their parents had someone hold their hand the entire way, never letting them get a breath of failure.

I had a pretty teacher put up a display of a check:
"this is where the routing number is, that's different for every bank"
"this is your account number, no two are the same"
"you put your amount in as both a number and a written figure because this is a legal document"

She was just out of college and wearing a blue dress, black black hair like a raven, short and just a tiny bit chunky, great smile and sparkling eyes, meaty calves. Had a rock hard bonrar at age 15 watching her teach me about checks.

But I know how to do a budget and write checks.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Yea but life is life, stop snowflaking people, we HAVE to have common standards of assesment to provide signals to universities, employers etc.

Stop confusing a failure of individual teachers with a failure of the system. Pick up a teaching degree textbook, they learn everything but forgot/fail to apply/cant be bothered/get dissillusioned with the system etc

Smart people for the most part still succeed, dumb people mostly fail.

Sure the system isnt perfect, but you have not proposed an a better one.

And dont underestimate how much technology will naturally change education in the years to come.

Private schools have their benefits but they can also be dogmatic and take away kid's enthusiasm to learn.

I can honestly say I was immature when I was in school - I didn't take it seriously. However, my teachers and the curriculum definitely did not instill in me a love for learning. Once I graduated high school I started to love reading when I hated it before.

Here is what I couldn't understand about school. Here is an example

Ex: It is important to know who George Washington was, and what he did, how it impacts us today, some backround information about him, BUT having to remember when and where he was born, when and where he died, his wife's name, ect aren't important. Same thing with battles. Yes, it's important to know when and where the battle of Gettysburg took place, the results, impact of the battle, but not exact dates, the name of every general and officer and when and where they were born being just as important as other factors in the battle.
Endless Tasking. Not learning anything, just wearing you out, keeping you busy.
Learning useless skills. A lot of time is spent learning things you will never use, while things you will use, are pretty much skipped over.
Exploiting the weaknesses. Yes where you are weak you should train, like anything else, but not try to make those students ashamed and tell them they are failures.
Ignoring strengths: If you are good at something, you are basically held back, and less time there.
Example: you have a student that is gifted in Science and Math, but he sucks at History and Literature. The Public Schools' answer is to cut out Science and Math and make him double up on History and Literature.

Finally: Putting children with "disorders" in with the rest of the students. Toxic.

Answering that question could take pages, but suffice it to say that "an idle mind is the devils workshop." Without an education, human children would turn into monkeys.

I'm a teacher and emphasising creativity & critical thinking vs just memorising things is exactly the aim of he game. The old memorisation stuff is about 20-30 years out of date. No teacher I know barring language (where you just need to remember the words) or some math, where they need to drill in the formulas teach in that ay.

There's still a lot of inherent memorization -- but its necessary. Its when you get to college that your learning get to develops independently.
