Nice. Do you ever do EMOMs (every minute on the minute)? You ever do anything like 15 rounds of 6 pull ups every minute on the minute? That would be a good one for you.

Did 100 pull ups for time today in 5:42. I think that's a PR for me. Hammered them out!

no never. Might give it a shot next year.

Got 11:00 today.

Did 50 in 4 min which was 1 min faster than last session where I got 11:23. That was about what I thought I'd need to get sub 10 but I guess not. Idk why I slowed down so much second half, I pretty much just did singles after.

I think to break 10 I need to get like 25 first set, then bang out quick sets of 5.

Right now I'm doing 20 first set then quick sets of 4 down to 3. Currently it feels like to do the 5th rep I would have to hang for a few seconds. I think when I can do it without pausing I will break 10.

Form looks great, Mark. One of the reasons I do them faster is because of physics. I lock out my arms but not my lats, as most pull ups competitions I've ever been part of just require arms locking out. While locking out your lats may make some naysayers in the comments sections of Youtube videos slightly happier (though they're never happy, we all know that), it increases the range of motion, thus taking more time and more energy. But nice job!

Any idea how many you will do a minute when you are tired? For me, once I've blasted out a few minutes, I know I'm good for about 12 a minute after that, maybe 13 if I give a max effort, and maybe 11 if I'm not focused. So I know I need to get mid 60s+ in the first 3 minutes if I want to get sub 6 minutes for 100. If you got to 50 in 4 minutes, which is great by the way, then you're doing a little over 7 a minute to hit the last 50 in 7 minutes. So if you can increase to a little over 8 reps a minute after that, then it'll take you about 6 minutes to wrap it up. The math is basically about 1 every 7.5 seconds after doing 50 in 4 minutes, then you'll hit your goal.

Consider trying that EMOM workout I suggested. That'll do wonders to your pull ups. It's a good one. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight, I am going to try the arm locking out only versus full deadhang and see what my time will look like!

It's a different movement, that's for sure. Some people's bodies naturally lock lats and arms or just arms as well. Also, doing pull ups on the door frame pull up bars are tough for hitting a quick time since they are naturally slightly less stable than a sturdy mounted bar. Good luck! I did 53 pull ups in a row this morning without dropping from the bar, which was a big PR for me. I think three of them were very close as to whether or not I got my chin over, but even at 50 I'm still pumped.

So I did this yesterday, it was pretty easy. How should I progress from there?

Good feedback. Try 15 rounds of 7 reps or even 8 reps EMOM. Also, try 10 rounds of 6 reps with 10lbs added to you, immediately followed by 5 rounds of 6 BW EMOM. That's a good one.

Been doing some linear periodization for pull ups for the last 3ish months.

Current Scheme:

10 x BW (Warm Up)
8 x BW+25 lbs
8 x BW+25 lbs
8 x BW+25 lbs
8 x BW+25 lbs

Once I get 4 sets of 10 with +25lbs, I will up the weight by 2.5lbs and work my way up to 4 x 10 again...and so on.

Any suggestions or tips? This has been working really well, but am always open to ideas.

Good numbers you're putting up. I always like to mix up weights. You ever try to mix things up with various weights? I did a workout recently where I would do as many reps as I could with certain kettlebells in one minute (coming off bar during minute allowed), then rest two minutes, then drop the weight a little bit, rest two minutes, etc. I might do 5-6 rounds of that. As you drop weight, try to keep the number of reps similar. My weights were 100 lbs, 72 lbs, 56 lbs, 44 lbs, 35 lbs, then 26 lbs. That's a good one.

That actually sounds pretty interesting to try.

I might have to give it a go.

Though, +35 lbs is probably the heaviest I can go and still get some good numbers, maybe +45 lbs if I don't mind getting under 5

Give it a go and let me know. Also, when I do as many reps as I can in a minute with a certain weight added, I will allow myself to drop from the bar during that minute to recover between reps once I can't keep going continuous, then mainly do single reps till the minute is done. If you haven't tried that yet, you'll be shocked at how many more reps you can do, and how much less each set gases you out. It ultimately will make your sets where you don't drop from the bar much, much better. Maybe try as many reps in a minute + 45 lbs, rest 2 min, +35 lbs, rest 2 min, +25 lbs, rest 2 min, +15 lbs, rest 2 min, + 5 lbs, rest 2 min, bodyweight, rest 2 min. Done. That'll be epic.

Scribblies, you cranking out pull ups in Antarctica? I like it. Whenever I injure my lower body I know my pull ups are about to get epic because my legs will lose some weight due to atrophy, meaning less weight to pull up and down. Go get some PRs!

Hmm. Good question. Lots of factors that could adjust that answer, such as weight and height, as well as whether pull ups are weighted or not. With that said, and this is likely my own personal definition of pull ups, but regarding traditional bodyweight pull ups with proper form, and going till you peel off the bar, below is my internal categorizing. Anyone else want to comment on what their categorizing is?

10+ = pretty good, clearly some level of dedication has been taken
20+ = good, you're probably one of or perhaps the best at your local gym, and you've hit the top of the food chain for US Marine Corps and Navy Seal standards (to my knowledge)
25 - 30+ = really good, you're pretty much a bad ass, and you might win some local competitions, or pursue other high level activities that benefit from pull up strength, like Ninja Warrior.
35+ = extremely good. You likely win most, if not all, of the in person pull ups competitions you stumble upon. You are very committed to pull ups, and likely have been committed for a very long time.
40+ = great. You are elite with pull ups. Congrats, you probably win not only in person pull up comps, but online ones as well. You are also very committed to pull ups, and are doing pull ups at a level that is rarely attained.

But all of these should be weight adjusted. Someone who weighs 200 lbs that does 35 pull ups is stronger on a weight adjusted basis than someone 115 lbs doing 40 pull ups, though both are of course impressive.

So tried EMOM again with 8. I forgot how many sets before I burned out but after a while I had to stop and break the sets down. I still did 8 every minute, but not on the minute in a single set.

I guess next time I'll try 7.

Nice work, Fitman! Good post. I like the 18 reps with 20 kg. Form was solid. Chin was clearly above bar, arms locked out, and no kipping. Try and keep the waist straight, if you can, on those last few reps. Otherwise, a really good set!

I guess next time I'll try 7.
Good work, BostonRockets. 8 EMOM is no joke. This morning I did 15 sets of 10 EMOM with just bodyweight, and they were pretty tough. I was able to get through 11 sets unbroken (without dropping from the bar during the sets of 10), and I finally on the last four sets had to start with five or so, then do singles. Tough workout, and quick workout! Let us know how 15 sets of 7 EMOM go. If you want to mix it up do the first 10 sets of 7 with + 5 lbs, then the last 5 sets BW. That extra 5 lbs makes it tougher but definitely helps gains.

There's no real benefit to not doing the full range of motion for pullups, right? Except for getting better rep numbers I imagine.

By that I mean not fully contracting the lats. Looking at the videos it looks like there's a lot of ROM left.

Again, curious as to why?

How tall/how much do you guys weight?

Some of those numbers are incredibly impressive. Can't wait to rep just 75% of my BW, let alone 150%, damn.

Thanks for the compliments. Lots of different heights and weights on this thread. I'm 5'10', and lately my weight has varied between 167 lbs and 172 lbs, depending on how much I'm training my legs, and how heavy I'm doing weighted pull ups and weighed push ups. Keep it going!
