At the end of the day, there are only 3 types of people, and it's pathetic to pretend to be one when you really aren't
1) Car guys that will maintain their performance cars by themselves
2) Ballers that can afford a performance car despite their lack of knowledge
3) Regular guys that don't know about cars and can only afford a basic car
If you're a 3 guy pretending to be something you're not, that's pathetic, Peter

Meh I am kicking around the thought of eventually buying a used Audi r8. 10 years later still pretty classic/similar aesthetic.
If you can afford the upkeep why not? If you can't afford it obviously it's dumb but not because it's a car. It's dumb to buy any depreciating asset that you can't afford.

It really depends. But I definitely laugh at people driving 10 year old BMWs trying to ball. Have fun spending $10k on repairs each year.

OP I'm about to pick up a 2014 Lexus is250 f sport. It has 30k kms
I love the aesthetics and the idea of Toyota reliability. Am I safe from your judgement? Sorry man I just don't want to appear foolish to the world.
The car is 50k otd new here, vs 27k used. I'm trying to figure out where it falls in. Should I drop 23 grand more to save the 15k miles on it to prove I'm a true baller or just buy something less aesthetic with crap interior and cope because it's new?
Idk. I only ask because I'm really concerned with what strangers think and it falls half way in between new and 10 years old. What do?

Definitely not my thing either. What's funny is most base model MB or BMW cars are fairly cheap if you just want to look like you have money and still want reliability a warranty.
I suppose people buying those used luxury vehicles aren't even spending that much though. Honestly you can get one with high miles for like 5-10k and people won't know the difference. If you only care about looking flashy its cheap to put on. Until you get hit with maintenance.

Purely cosmetics, more aggressive grill, sexier seats and gauge package. Thinking this will be the car I drive for like the next decade. Kinda gutless but I don't wanna buy their new inline 4 turbo because I don't wanna replace the turbo if it ever goes.
Gonna be getting some dirty looks from op when it turns ten and I've put 100k miles on her but whatever.

I have a infiniti g37 ipl version and although its not 10+ i did buy it used but the thing was just too sexy to not buy, plus the design is almost timeless and doesnt even look like an older car. Still looks like something that would come out this year. Plus im an enthusiast and the thing is a ****ing beast and is something completely out of the ordinary and not just some basic car from infiniti but actually something special. I used to and still feel the same way though but only about the old cars that look dated and hold absolutely no value to them at all. If its an old car thata nothing special then i find it pathetic but for example a porsche 997 911 still looks brand fukcing new despite being well over 10 years old and is still expensive as chit for a car its age.

Just LOL at buying a new car and LOL at payments for a car.
Picked up a 03 350z for 8k 5 years ago, never been to a dealer and we are still going strong.
BRB enough power to have a quick burst of adrenaline
BRB fun to drive
BRB no payments and everything is cheap for it
BRB complete freedom to modify MY CAR not the bank's car

"Biggest fear in life is holding babies. Their so fragile, if you drop them you can ruin their entire life.
When a baby is looking at me and no one else is, I like to make sad faces to get the baby to cry and no one knows why it's crying. If they are young enough they will mimic other peoples emotions so if you act sad they will get sad." -captiontom

A new car depreciates in value much faster than a 10 year old car. Warranties are a scam. So there's much worse financial decisions people are making on a daily basis.
For example off the top of my head going 50k+ in debt to get a worthless liberal arts degree, graduate and work as a barista at starbucks with nothing to show for that debt but a head full of feminist ideology...

I think it's smart
Bottom of the car's depreciation curve. A 10-year old well maintained German car will still look and drive like a new car. No brand new domestic will drive as well as a 10 year old BMW. Plus they last forever and maintain their quality fit, finish and feel. My current ride is a 6spd S4 with 160k that literally feels showroom fresh. Sure upkeep isn't cheap, but the driving experience is worth it IMO. To each their own.

LMAO just fkkn LMAO @ buying a new car
If you have any functioning pair of testicles and know your way around fixing a car and maintaining it... srs why???
I bought a 2011 BMW 1 series 2.0l for 15,000.. the thing is top notch, installed the enhanced timing chain myself and now I have a damn nice car with a combination of extras/interior/performance you'd never get from a 15,000euro 2017 built car
And just LMAO at recent down-sized turbo engines, those things drain your wallet real quick and will hardly make it to 170,000km at all.

I have an old 1980s Porsche and an old s class from the 80s. Both feel completely different from any new car. The S class is like a tank and when you close the door you hear a nice solid “thunk” like a bank vault. It is super smooth and the wood trim is from actual wood. Back then with a german car, you paid for quality. The Porsche is not super fast but it is still competitive on the track, it is easy to fix (doesn’t require 10k dollar computers) and it’s nothing like any newer Porsche.
In addition, most Porsche/BMW/Mercedes enthusiasts love the older cars. They are fun to work on, engineered well, easy to diagnose (you don’t need expensive computers) and they were built to last. Porsche and BMW got their name partially through motorsports and some of these cars are a byproduct of the R&D that went into racing. I have a new f22 M235i...while it is an awesome car, it just doesnt feel the same as older german cars.
Lastly, Idgaf what you you think, I buy the car for me to enjoy and look at.

A ten year old Lexus performs better, is more reliable and is generally better value than spending the same money on a new car.
