Quite common here in Europe where taxes are higher.
For the same price you can get a smart, dacia, renaukt clio....or a 15 yea old 5 series bmw station wagon , diesel, with only 150k-200k km.
Knowing the reliability of diesel bmws, the noise insulation and comfort for high speed highway driving,..do you really think people would rather spend the money on an small economy hatch???
Not to mention maintenance. I know some 320d e46 which in 250k km witb automatic transmissions, have only had the oil, filter and other fluids replaced, along with brakes.

Meh, doesn't really apply where I'm from. Vehicles are taxed like crazy. A new 3 series with the lowest powered engine costs around 65k USD. Just adding M sport costs an additional 6k USD. Costs for parts and labor are high as fuk.
So buying a used one makes more sense, and even if it's 10 years old you still get status points from people because you don't see German cars anywhere near as often here.
I go to Miami fairly often and everywhere I turn there's a BMW/MB/AUDI. Especially with leasing those things are so common and cheap. I really don't get the big deal of having an old one there. Nobody should be bragging about that lol.
So buying a used one makes more sense, and even if it's 10 years old you still get status points from people because you don't see German cars anywhere near as often here.

As time goes on and cars become more complicated, it's making more and more sense to me that owning a car out of warranty is not ideal. I'm sure that's exactlywhat the auto industry has been trying to do.

You see German cars broken down on the side of the road typically because people skimp on maintenance, buy the chittiest quality of parts they can because they are cheap, or try and fix it themselves and do a poor quality job. I see it all the time.

In Europe, most cars you see broken down by the side of the road are actually italian, followed by french. Considering how much BMW, Mercedes and VAG sells, it's really saying something.

Depends on intent, I'd suppose. I love Acuras--owned three TL's and two MDX's. I went from the third generation TL to the fourth and then back to the third because I loved it so much. I do have my sights set on the new TLX A-Spec, but I'm really bummed that (as of right now) it's styling only, hoping that performance upgrades are in the next iteration.
I'm also in love with 2002-2005 NSX's and wouldn't hesitate to buy one if the price were right.

This is the type of car a family man drives after droping kids in school and goes to work by highway at 80mph (or above 120mph if you're in germany) for over 50 miles each way.
if you want a car to travel the continent that provides you with nice comfort AND noise insulation, this is the the car to buy. (and you have loads of them in germany above 150-200k miles).
You guys should really fight to get more of the german brands there. They have a lot of sensible options that are more than to just show off..

I see a lot of college students at my college with older 3 series BMWs and Mercedes and audis all the time. I'm sure there parents bought it but I don't get why bc none of the base models look impressive and really aren't status. Only status ones are newer sporty looking ones in my mind. Oh well, I prefer driving my truck anyways. Not that sloots would know this but trucks are more expensive anyways lol

Most guys I know that buy older BMW's end up selling once they have their first $1K+ repair, which can be something as small as a window not rolling up correctly.
