You're spot on man, there was so much bull**** that was injected into this movie and it falls right in line with all the other garbage that is portrayed in other recent Hollywood productions and the media. Even aside from that, the movie was terrible as far as Star Wars movies go and there were so many plot holes and stupid moments. Like when Leia went all Mary Poppins through the sky. What the actual **** was that.

Most of the positive critical reviews probably come down to two flavors:

This was the movie release equivalent of a focus group test, except the testeeswere the ones paying the testers. Then they bought a hundred f**king porgs, because the Lucasfilm division had a bet with Marvel studios on who could beat Baby Groot.

So anyone who felt this was a direct insult to their intelligence, congratulations, you were right! Seriously, from a narrative perspective alone,howdo you tease this grand, epic, interconnected journey withoutanykind of basic outline or plan for just thenextiteration in the series? This just seems like basic writing 101 that should be expected in the modern era of storytelling; even George Lucas originally hadsomesemblance of a bloody plan, hence starting at EpisodeIV, but these dumb-dumbs went in making a cookie-cutter blockbuster that is designed for quarterly reports and appeasing the cultists over any substantial cinematic merit that will be appreciated years from now.

That ~50 minute RedLetterMedia video has some good discussion going on, and towards the latter fourth of the video they make an especially valid point as to how there is a palpable marketing veneer overeverythingpertaining to these new Star Wars movies. For the faults of the older films, there was always a sense ofsomesort of artistic process going on, for better or worse, whereas anything pertaining to this new trilogy is akin to watching a HappyMeal commercial. In Star Wars' particular case, you're absolutely right, and they never bothered to specify how this fancy new galactic republic could have a "resistance" against a small, fringe outfit of leftovers who they already defeated. Plus, all it takes is a quick google search to figure out whatthe last rebel group's official name was all about, and usethatas the bar to work up from.

(Just a testament to how nonexistent the story is in the new trilogy,wikipediatells you more about wtf is going on than the actual movies).

Cliffs of cliffs: "The Resistance" is not some scrappyrebelunderdog, so much as an intergalactic private military company formed to circumvent the intergalactic equivalent of the UN if it was run entirely by women and limp-wristed men.

Everything before "the Resistance" part is just "what if World War II was in space?", which could have actually been an great premise for TFA, but JJ Abrams doesn'tdoexplaining, or writing, or resolving jack-sh*t; the guy only knows how to throw a mystery wrapped in a riddle that ends in a cliffhanger at people, then never actually deliver upon the built up expectations with anything of greater substance than the sum of its loose threads.

Likewise, Disney needed space princesses and toys, not future-WWII... also, the idea of Disney basically endorsing actual space-Nazi analogues would not exactly fly,especially with Walt Disney's history of prejudices.

So the real story is that the New Republic was so grossly incompetent that they ignored an entire planet being turned into a third f**king death star, which was then used to blow most of them up, and "the Resistance" is collective private military who couldn't actually agree on a proper name because they didn't want to come off astooconfrontational.

Love that review.....but if you want to see an angrier review this one is better. He spends the first three minutes or so talking about the positives, but after that, the remaining 35 minutes is him ripping the movie to shreds;
