I work on ships but I could never see myself taking the risk of under water welding. On another note, I could never see women doing these types of jobs, the critical hands on jobs required for vital transport of chemical and petroleum products on a daily basis, they don't posses the rational and critical thinking skills necessary for this line of work just as they never make good fighter pilots. Being in the industry has opened my eyes into how much men really do 99% of the engineering and operational processes necessary for modern functioning life from natural gas and petroleum exploration and refining to transportation and delivery.

The worse part is the sicknesses related to the compression and decompression cycles, which is why I'll never get into this job (I'm a pipe welder).

Some guys are fresh as a daisy in their 60s, some start going insane in their 30s, or their bones starts deteriorating from the marrow. And since it's a relatively new field, medicine can't yet prevent these things, so being an underwater welder or a commercial diver in general is like russian roulette.

So 1 individual woman was mentioned in a video and you think that justifies them being a large faction of the industry? lol. Of course there are a few here and there but from personal firsthand experience within the oil, gas, offshore, and marine industry, it's nearly all men that dictate the operations and engineer the systems and maintenance for these sectors. From the planning and actual engineering to the field and jobsite hands on work, its led by men. I don't understand miscers hating on people who work with their hands. Some of the sharpest minds and best critical thinkers I know have all been/still are tradies. Sorry OP for getting off topic but it just sparked my mind after reading/watching about underwater welding.

These jobs pay this much because that's what it takes to get people who can and are willing to do that job. If a job is not that high on the skill list, but pays well, that means it's hard to get someone to do that job. Most of all, a lot of jobs seem like they are really easy until you try to do them yourself.

I think he may have worded that wrong. It's not that there aren't women who can, it's just that there aren't as many women who are at least willing to go for jobs like that. Women's minds are geared differently than men's and for good reason. Also, women are much more likely to consider other factors such as quality of life in their careers. You tell her she will be working in a uncomfortable environment where toxic chemicals are going to be entering her body ,where she could be sucked into a pipe and mangled to death or drown she's going to "no thx Jeff" much more, while Jeff just sees this as a challenge and it such a Chad he's invincible, and 100K.... well he's all signed up.

Knew a guy personally who did this line of work. He died drowning on the job while deep sea welding.

He left behind a wife and 2 kids.

" Indian air force commanders say...." lol how many pages of google searching did it take for you to find this brilliant article. Anybody can google anything hard enough to fit their own narrative. Anyway I see it day in and day out so I'd rather go by my first hand experiences and the majority of women just do not belong nor have the necessary aptitude to take on challenging mechanical or other hands on jobs including buy certainly not limited to underwater welding. Oil and gas refineries, plants, and rigs are male dominated for a reason. It's a high stress, dangerous but absolutely necessary job that mainly can only be accomplished in a satisfactory manner by men. And no, I'm not salty from a woman being promoted before me because it hasn't happened but if the day a woman is better suited for the position and can actually perform at her job then by all means she deserved it because it's a difficult industry for woman to excel at.

Yes, I only clicked on the one link so I did miss the US Army article. Anyway I'm a marine engineer. I have worked on all major types of sea going ships (cargo, oil tanker, military support ships, oil exploration deepwater drill ships etc.) as well as shoreside maintenance facilities/shipyards, electrical generating & distribution plants, and industrial construction sites. So I have seen quite a bit in terms of the different types of people in the engineering/"hands on" industry and who is involved with most of the operations.

I was seriously considering this career when I was in my early 20s. I got accepted to the training school, had my tuition all saved and ready to go. I'm glad I decided against it.

Years ago I was doing work for a guy who was an under water welder (out on disability) for a local navy shipyard. He used to tell me stories and said it was VERY tough on his body. The guy had a real hard time just moving around, he wasn't quite crippled...he just looked like his whole body was in pain constantly. I don't know if he got the bends (DCS) or something, never told me.

Six months or so later I talked to his wife and she told me he had passed away. He couldn't have been older than 45.
