definitely. she doesn't know **** about bourbon or alcohol in general so I don't know how she got something perfect for me and didn't get suckered into buying the most expensive bottle in the store. knocked it out of the park, gonna use BH to develop a palate of sort first before moving to the harder stuff.

Good choice by the gf. I received a bottle of Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie from my fiancee for Christmas. Was honestly surprised she picked out such a bottle. A pretty complicated unpeated Islay Scotch.

I just discovered a dandy, fellas.

Damn this stuff is delicious. I went into the store to buy my usual Evan Williams Single Barrel but this caught my eye. For only $2 more I decided to try it out.

Real vanilla. Mildly spicy, sweet aftertaste. Nice mouth feel, too. Good for swirling around the mouth and getting a full assortment of flavors.

Late to this post, but if you like peat single malts try Talisker as well. It's peaty, but has a bit of sweetness in there you usually only get from highland scotches.

Picked up a bottle of Ardbeg An Oa last weekend - if you like peat monsters this thing is like tea made from campfire ashes. Not an everyday sipper but for special occasions it's surprisingly affordable - I think is was only $65?

Tin Cup just released a 10 year expression, seems like early reviews are good:

One of my favorite distilleries. If you get a chance try out the Islay Barley in the yellow metal container, it's a favorite of mine.

Headed down to KY for a couple tours this weekend.

Buffalo Trace, Makers, 1792 and Heaven Hill are on the agenda.

It's only a 4-hour drive from Columbus, and weather looks pretty decent. Wish us luck boyos.

Sure do! You just buy a bottle and they let you dip it yourself. We did Bourbon Trail for my Bachelor party and my gift to my groomsmen was a bottle of 46 they could dip themselves.

Did the KY bourbon trail this weekend. Stayed at a real nice Bed n' Breakfast in Louisville, did a whole bunch of driving Saturday. A lot.

We went to the following in this order:

Buffalo Trace
Four Roses
Makers Mark
Heaven Hill Heritage Center

- If we had just gone to Buffalo Trace, the entire weekend would have been a success. It was everything you'd expect in a distillery tour. The setting is fantastic, the tour guide was awesome, the smell in the air is mesmerizing. There's so much history there, and you learn so damn much at this one place I came away with a whole new, profound appreciation for the whisky/bourbon process.

Even the amount of automation and technology in bottling, packaging, and all the science behind the whole operation is incredibly intriguing. Even my wife who couldn't care less about bourbon had an awesome time. We bought 2 bottles of Eagle Rare in the gift shop and other souvenirs.

- Four Roses was mostly a bust. Seemed very commercial, it was just a tasting and history lesson so no tour here. The guide lady was very schticky and you felt like you were hearing the same corny jokes she has told every group, every day, for the past 5 years. You get a souvenir glass with your tastings, so that was cool.

- Makers Mark is absolutely gorgeous. The grounds feel like you are in a city in itself. Everything is beautifully maintained, its very quaint feeling, and the whole tour process from start to finish runs like a well oiled machine. Nice to see the warehouse and the bottling area. The amount of automation and machinery here is staggering, it's truly remarkable to see it all in person. In the distance you can see warehouses up on the hill that create a nice back drop.

Something cool happened, after we left MM on the way to Heaven Hill we came around a hilly turn in Kentucky's countryside and found ourselves passing a huge, and I mean HUGE Makers Mark warehouse complex that made my jaw drop. There must have been 15 warehouses, all fenced in, in the trademark MM black+red trim. I wish I had taken a picture but I was driving.

- Heaven Hill was a bust as well, it was just an information tasting with a brief history of the brand. If we had planned better, we would have reserved a spot in the behind the scenes tour. Most of my favorites are HH so I was hoping for a better experience, but it was also very commercialized.

Interesting. Four Roses was my favorite of the 6 distilleries on the "official" tour, but our guide was awesome. I also knew the least about them as a distillery so I enjoyed trying their wares.

Agreed, tho, BT blows away everyone else.


New purchase this weekend, a bottle of Glenmorangie 10. Normally $45 down here, and it was on sale for $35.

If you haven't had this before it's an absolute classic. So smooth and drinkable, on nights you want something a little more complex than Jameson this'll do you fine.

Loooove whiskey. I'll drink it any way; neat, rocks, with some ginger ale or sprite... preferred method is to use my large ice cube tray and just add one cube to a glass. At home right now I've got some Seagrams 7(for mixing), Maker's Mark(kind of my baseline go-to) Woodford Reserve, Basil Hayden's (my favorite of late), and a bottle from a local distillery called Smoke Wagon that my girl got me for Christmas. Had never heard of them before, but it's pretty tasty.

I'm also a big fan of whiskey cocktails ie old fashioned's, manhattan's etc. My favorite spirit by far.

Glenfiddich. Preferably the 14. Anything from Speyside or the Highlands will usually be unpeated and pretty accessible.

I've seen it before at high end bars in Seattle, but never ordered it; Can't see myself throwing down $200 on a bottle.

Imo don't pay $200 for a blend.

I'm all for blends and believe fully in what blenders do. But Blue is overhyped imo.


Macallan 12 is always a good first choice for Scotch. If you want a gateway to smoke, then I recommend Highland Park 12. Monkey Shoulder is a blend that's extremely friendly, and affordable.

Scotch tends to break down by regional styles. Obviously there are distilleries that do their own thing, but Speysides (distilleries along the river Spey) tend to be sweet and floral, easy sipping. Usually no peat, or just a little. The island of Islay is home of the smokebomb, campfire ash flavor distilleries. Laphroaig is from Islay. The smokey stuff is AWESOME when I'm in the mood for it, but definitely an acquired taste to me.

Just tried Johnnie Walker Black label for the first time. Smokey/ashy after taste if that makes sense. Absolutely loved it -- would go great with a steak meal!

I had some macallan fine oak (10 year?) and I really dug it. May look into the Speysides and Highlands. Are they actually labeled that way on the bottle? I know my local place mentioned before will have a really good selection. They have a "cabinet" with a bunch of pappy's and the like. Stuff selling for 1000-2500 easy. But they have REALLY good prices on the normal stuff.

I haven't but I've heard good things. I have a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan right now and it's quite good imo. A little intense at first at a tad over 57% ABV.

Depends. These days it's getting harder and harder to use the region as an idea to the flavor profile. These days Scotland has more distillery opening every year. They have something like 90 already, with 10 or so set to open next year. Mind you that Scotland has the population of Colorado. They're pushing out liquor as fast as they can just like the distillers we have in the U.S. They're trying new things (as much as they can with the super strict rules for Scotches) which is changing how we can really look at the regions they come from.

Guys, I just cracked open a bottle of 2010 Evan Williams Single Barrel and it might be the best yet.

I've gone though one bottle of 2007, two bottles of 2009, and now this tasty treat. Perfect from start to finish, creamy caramel, vanilla, a little spice and a nice mouth feel and finish.

This, and Russell's Reserve are easily my favorite daily sippers. What a time to be alive!
