Lol.
Not even close. I’ve taken construction worker friends that are bigger than me to the gym and they struggle with 135.
After 5-6 months of consistent training they would probably be stronger than me though.

I doubt the average male in his 20's that has a gym membership can bench 185 for reps, among the general population there is no way.

It depends
If someone is short and fat it should be easy
If the person doesn't lift but plays a lot of sports it should be easy

Average guy? Probably not.
When I lived with my cousin he benched 235 lbs for reps, and he doesn't work out, I know only because he decided to to try to bench what I had on the bar one day and succeeded.
He was about 240 lbs at 6 foot 2 at the time.
I've known quite a few people who have benched 200+ there first time and deadlifted 300-400 there first time.
I stopped lifting for 3-4 years and my bodyweight went down to 160ish and when I went back to the gym I could still put up 135 for reps and I'm not naturally a strong guy.
Keep in mind the gym attracts nerdy types, not naturally strong types.
Lol at *******s thinking the average male is weak as fuk, my cousin (the one I mentioned before) as a kid/teenager would drink liters of milk everyday and work like a dog, piling/splitting firewood with an axe, sometime for 6 hours in one day when he was a teenager.

OP, no average male with no experience definitely not. If you want your mind to be blown go to the recruiter's office and look at people signing up for the military doing the overhead machine press it can be amusing.
You have to remember our vision/thoughts are blurred about size/strength as well. I am a manlet and fill out L/XL shirts but sometimes I deload for a 1-2 weeks and feel like I shrank too much but people roll their eyes saying nah man you're still jacked.
If anything I could see a non lifter having a higher deadlift pull than a bench push their first times, squats I wont go into as most gym goers ignore legs all together.

You don't have to believe me, I know what I've seen.
As for me, the first time I benched I had trouble with the bar and I weighed 105 at 6 feet tall.

Let's say 20% of the male population from 20-29 goes to the gym and 70% of that population can do 185 for a few reps.
Of the 80% who doesn't go to the gym, I'll say 15% could walk in on day 1 and do 185 for reps. A good chunk would do 185 for reps within 12 weeks though (add 25% maybe).
(0.2 x 0.7) + (0.15 x 0.8) = 26% of the population.
If they had 12 weeks to train?
(0.2 x 0.75) + (0.4 x 0.8) = 47% of the population
I think I'm way high on both estimates but however you want to look at it (right at this moment or w/ a bit of training), no way the majority of 20-29 year-olds could do this.

We all know that 225lbs is the bench weight for testing college football players looking to get drafted.
Did you know that 185lbs is the bench weight for testing HS football players looking for D1 scholarships?
Thus, a potential D1 HS football recruit has to demonstrate a high rep total @ 185lbs so as not to hurt his chances during the recruiting process.
That's not something the average male in his 20's (who hasn't weight trained) can do.

Is it true?
Let them tell it, and it is 300lb max and 225 for reps. Or that is what they used to bench, even though no evidence exists.

Average male is around 185 lbs, so you would expect people to be able to bench their bodyweight.
That's not what I usually see at the gym though. Most guys are working with 135 lbs.

Im putting it at like 135. Most people dont even lift but some fat people or athletically built people can put up a decent weight.

Why would you expect them to bench their own bodyweight?Average male is around 185 lbs, so you would expect people to be able to bench their bodyweight.
That's not what I usually see at the gym though. Most guys are working with 135 lbs.

It took me about a year of training to be able to finally bench 185 lbs for reps. I'm certain men at a higher bodyweight would be able to in lesser time.
