I read this too. If BTC falls to $2k, then the game is over. Everything will come crashing down and probably never recover. I thought it took over $1k to mine a single BTC. I really doubt it will crash so far down. Typical non-news story imo.

Would be nice if they actually communicated with news. Instead of saying nothing and letting speculation run wild.

Can someone please explain the hate? Why would all the major exchanges have USDT on their exchange if it were such a scam? It was nice to chill in USDT while BTC and alts dropped during massive dips. I saw it pretty convenient

Ok, I get how tether isn't really backed by provable USD, but can someone tell me how it's not backed by the BTC from those who sell into it? U get there would be an inherent discrepancy in dollar value, which is why I think they print more. I never use it, never will. But I'm legit curious.

Ease of business, it's an unregulated market. No legit exchanges such as Coinbase or Gemini use USDT.

USDT is an obvious scam, just look at the money they "print" whenever the market dips. Sure it's convenient but it's too good to be true, same as bitconnect, sounds great but from a logical standpoint there is no way it is legit.

tether causes greater volatility because people assume its a safehaven. So people short btc causing more volatility. This makes tether bad for the overall market.

this is actually a good point

without USDT on most of the major exchanges, people wouldn't be hopping in and out of BTC/ETH so frequently causing these major fluctuations

From the man, Charlie Lee
More
1/ With respect to the Tether situation, it's expected for CFTC to subpoena Bitfinex to investigate if there are any wrongdoings. The fact that the subpoena is in December 2017 and they have still continued issuing USDT is good news.

USDT is just like any other altcoin.

2/ If it turns out that USDT is not backed by real USD, the price will crash to 0. This is similar to what happened with BitConnect BCC. It should not affect BTC or any other altcoins. The reason why it does is because people are afraid of it affecting and they sell.

3/ This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. People afraid of price crashing, sell their coins, and cause the price to actually crash.

IMO, hodl is the best move to ride this out. And buy the dip. That said, don't ask me to buy LTC as I decided to not trade LTC for other reasons.

Getting rid of USDT would be the best thing for the market, so many weak hands use it.

Besides, eradicate it now when the market is still small and already in a dip, timing couldn't be better for this mess, so hopefully there isn't a huge effect.

No. I've been wary of the U.S gov using tether as a way to tor-p-e-d-o the market for awhile now. Tether not saying anything about it for a couple months is sketchy as fuark.

ahh got yah. when i was using robinhood for stocks you can set price alerts so that your phone sends you an alarm when a certain stock hits a certain point so you can then check it out and decide to buy, sell, or hold.

yea, there are plenty of crypto apps where you can set alerts if that's your thing, I like Cryptonaut, Delta is probably the most popular.

I'll just set buy orders and leave them though, obviously adjust them here and there depending on the market but often just let them ride since I am a firm believer that nobody is going to time the market perfectly.

To think about what would happen if Tether collapses, think about what would happen if you were holding it and it collapsed.

1. You'd be pissed.
2. You'd have to inject more money into the market to get back in the game or stay out forever out of anger.
3. Nobody that was holding anything else outside of Tether would be affected.

Am I missing something here?

Yes, the FUD and distrust in something that has been a major part of crypto would see a lot of people pull their money out of the market. Just like when Mt Gox collapsed, well similar, most likely Tether wouldn't have nearly as bad of an effect.

The thing with Tether is that it was money that was created supposedly with backing, and then that tether was used to buy bitcoin whenever it dipped hard, possibly to hold the price of BTC up. So the makers of Tether could theoretically have $2 billion of BTC that was bought with nothing. It makes the price of BTC look higher than it actually is and there are 200,000 BTC that could be sold off by them at any point.

I think it's overexaggerated but whatever. We'll see.
