I've never understood the obsession with guys talking about how they don't watch soccer. Just lol. Who cares? I'm sure there are any number of sports you don't watch in addition to soccer. Most Americans don't watch cricket, rugby, curling, lacrosse, etc.

Like most things, if you haven't competed in soccer you wouldn't understand the skill level/tactics involved. You wouldn't appreciate how difficult it is to bring down a ball on the side/top of the cleat mid stride, take a touch, and strike the ball/pass. Just lol at "it's just grown men kicking a ball around." Well playing the piano is just pressing a bunch of keys, but that can get pretty challenging...

The beauty of the game is the simplicity of it. Kids living in poverty in Africa can play with a ball made of rags and develop a lot of the skills involved. Somehow Americans managed to turn soccer into a rich kid game as well. "Travel" teams of kids with money competing for scholarships.

muricans realized they cant compete with rest of the world in soccer even though they have the best food, training and supplements available as a nation, yet some poor european/south american country kicks their azz

so what muricans did was create their own sport where they dominate and win....because they are the only ones playing it

I played football in high school, rugby in college, hockey too. I had friends on the soccer team at my uni and at one point I started to play with them for fun. Never looked back, IMO it's the most beautiful sport. Still play to this day when I can.

1) Because it's really simple to set up. You just need a soda can and 4 school bags and you can play some poverty soccergame withg your friends

2) Great fan culture with dads introducing their kids to soccer fandom.

3) Big World Championship, big leagues in European countries and a Premier Leagune to to tie those all together.

Godamnit this thread again? We just had one yesterday.

First it’s popular outside of the USA because of what everyone already mentioned. Easily accessible, easy to grasp basic rules and concepts, but difficult to master.

It’s not popular in the USA because any athlete here worth a damn gravitates towards football, basketball, baseball or hockey. This can be seen as low as the high school level and soccer is seen here as the backup sport to one of the main 4 if you can’t make it there.

football is actually amazing to watch. Ball changes possessions very often, burst break aways, goals are typically rare considering how much game time there is. This creates hype and tensions like no other sport.

American football can be ok, but its largely ruined by too many time outs,penalties, commercials, politics. Super bowl had way too much offense, brady was driving down the field like it was nothing.

Football has way more teams, way more leagues, cheap as fuk to play, and risk of injury is lower. GOat sport overall

Sigh. It most certainly is not. If you were to sit and actually count the amount of time where the ball is 'in play' in soccer it'd be much less than 45 minutes + injury time. It sometimes takes 2 minutes just to set up a free kick.

I enjoy soccer, but arguing that there is more 'in play' time is just a joke, given the nature of the game itself plus all the drama involved in it.

Much less than 45? According to Soccermetrics the effective play time in the 2010/11 PL season varied between 44 and 64 minutes, with a mean of 56 minutes per game. That is 56 minutes of effective play time, and over 5 times the effective play time in the NFL. And at the same time, NFL matches last for 4 hours...

Much less than 45+ injury time is what I said.

Let's say (45+2)x2 is fairly indicative, meaning 94 minutes. 56 minutes - glad you sought out the mean - is approximately 60% of actual 'play' in the time you're sitting there.

But, and I set this up deliberately, not all 'play' is equal. There's plenty of 'slow' play in soccer. Where you say commercials and stopped time in the NFL, they can say "harsh plays every time, even if they are fast, requiring elite athleticism, one of the most competitive entry barriers into a sport.." etc.

I like both sports - I like watching soccer when it is seriously good teams playing and they have something to lose. But NFL games rarely tie; soccer games can tie. And it's not so much about the ties it is sometimes that teams just aren't trying that hard. How many 0-0 soccer games have you been to? I have been to a few, and they suck. That's why sometimes I go watch the ultra linked team to mine that plays in a lower division. The play there is savage and I like seeing hungry players play.

The long and short of it is the simple issue that this is comparing apples to oranges. NFL plays show a kind of tactical mastery, take time to set up, take a lot of effort and practice to implement, like a surgical strike against another team. Soccer allows for individual and group greatness. Both are very different sports.

My only points in this thread have really been: (i) Ronaldo is certainly not the best of all time (it's Messi, and it's objective); (ii) that the way some people are defending soccer doesn't make sense. Arguing that 'in play' time is the salient factor misses the mark because 'in play' is not why people love soccer. They love soccer for the magic of those amazing plays and goals. I'm saying this as someone who saw this goal in person, and reveled in the fact that Chelsea fans had to sit in awe at what had just happened. I can't wait to see Barcelona vs Chelsea - I should add a fuq Chelsea fans in my sig.

they are probably more tense then where it's 3-0 with still 40 minutes to play for example, that game is over (99% of the time that is)

and this is coming from an American. All the arguments you have toward American football (the commercials the "stop and go" nature of the game) is thrown out the window when rugby is brought into the debate. sorry.

I "get" the appeal of "futbol" its not so much the game as its a cultural/country superiority contest and being around like minded individual chanting and rooting for a team, but outside of that, watching the game itself is pretty damn boring. Don't get my wrong I like to play "futbol" but to sit in a stadium for 2+ hours leading up to a 1-0 win for one side or the other is basically torture to me.
