Ease of access is one reason, but genetics play an important role also. It's a sport where you don't have to be the biggest, strongest, or tallest. Just build up stamina and learn to kick really well.

It's definitely less biased towards height and strength, which is a big reason why I love it. The GOAT is a Argentine manlet who had to take prescription substances to reach 5'7''. I compare that to basketball where as a manlet you better be agile and athletic af with god tier handles to ever stand a chance at competitive levels, from high school through the pros. Relative to the guys taller than you.

Still a fukton more to it soccer though than non-watchers care to admit. And I was once a diehard basketball fan and didn't watch soccer at all. Now it's completely reversed.

Yes they've been playing iterations of "kick ball" since at least the 3rd century and even medieval times in England, but England was the one who brought all these forms together into a standard ruleset which then spread internationally some time after they made the FA. Some ancient forms of kick ball probably had more in common with hacky sack than modern soccer.

Would take decades and a concerted focus on Soccer. Don't see that happening in our lifetimes. In Europe, children can enter academies at around 10 years old, and from there are trained and immersed in world class players & coaches, all the way until they join the first teams in top flight leagues which trounce the MLS.

Btw saying "0-0" as an argument is a well known code for "I don't know chit about soccer".

The beauty of the game is the simplicity of it. Kids living in poverty in Africa can play with a ball made of rags and develop a lot of the skills involved. Somehow Americans managed to turn soccer into a rich kid game as well. "Travel" teams of kids with money competing for scholarships.
