Water fasting is awesome. I did my first one about 6 months ago. I did it for 9 days. Lost about 25 lbs, but I did it as a detox not to lose weight. I am doing another one in the next couple of days. For first time I wouldn't recommend doing anything more then a week tbh. Couple of things I learned from my first fast was; first day is only day that is unbearable, do not use toothpaste when brushing teeth (water only), do not work out or do any heavy physical labor and you will definitely get light headed a couple of times, so be careful not to get up too quickly. Some people suggest not driving or going to work, tbh I had no problems whatsoever, I actually functioned better tbh and felt like I had more energy, but I'm sure everyone will be different.

The whole point of fasting is to have your body go into ketosis and use bodyfat for energy. If you eat even a small meal or two, it defeats the purpose.

Easily possible. You won't die, and likely a doctor's exam at the start and end will conclude you're vastly healthier, from blood sugar profile, blood pressure, test levels, to lipids, unless any of those is already perfect. Also, there is no evidence that slower weight loss is really more sustainable, actually the evidence shows all weight loss is hard af to keep long term.

That said, why not a PSMF? It's the overall calorie balance that matters, and with more calories you'll be able to do more, and feel better. Also with protein you'll have better outcomes in terms of lean mass.n How much lean mass you have does relate to the long term outcome.

Yeah 30 days is excessive. I wouldn't recommend anything over a week.

The most definitely are. Despite popular opinion, fasting have never left me feeling like I had "more" energy. Nevertheless, after I adapted to it, I was no longer lethargic.

Not entirely. Ketosis is just one of several byproducts of fasting. It will vary by goal.

RIP

The things we do for youtube
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

It's been proven that you're less catabolic when fasting than eating in a caloric deficit.

No, those positive are only up to 48 hours. But there are many different types of fasting. Or should I say goals involved with fasting?

If you're set on it, do yourself and loved ones a favor and at least consume some sodium, potassium -- buy supplement/powdered and just mix it in with one of your glasses of water.
Going very low calories/no calorie sucks, is silly but is ultimately manageable. Going no sodium is just stupid.

Before modern agriculture people weren't eating all day every day, they were eating big feasts once in a while, small meals, and going longer stretches without eating at all.
This. Humans aren't meant to constantly eat throughout the day. Think back to the days when we hunted food. You might go 3 days without eating, catch a deer or some chit and be good for the next few days, then back to no food again

Its not just the consumption of food, but our modern lives have made us fat and lazy. We no longer walk anywhere. We rarely move and when we do its typically only for short distances.

Our machines make our lives easier, but we forget we still have skeletal/muscular systems that are dependent on movement for their continued function.

Luckily, most of us here know this, and recognize the value of some form of daily exercise. Still, it is much less than what our ancestors would have achieve.

When Christian Bale did his starvation diet for The Machinist I think he ate one can of tuna and one apple per day. That and black coffee and water.
Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way but, in 20 years if you're still here postin' in hhhnnnggg threads, beggin' for mod reps, and braggin' about whales you harpooned from POF, I'll f'in kill ya. That's not a threat, that's a fact, I'll f'in kill ya. You got somethin' none of us have, and you don't owe it to yourself man, you owe it to me. Cuz tomorrow I'm gonna wake up and I'll be red, and I'll still be a socially awkward/FA. And that's all right.

Just do PSMF with vitamins and electrolytes. You wont make it a week with nothing and will make you too weak plus your electrolytes will be all off.

Wrong, actually.

Eating a little is actually a terrible idea. Look up the Minnesota Starvation Experiment.

Being in a fasted state, no calories, causes hormonal changes which preserve muscle (growth hormone primarily). Breaking that fast and taking in calories will cause that to not happen, you'll never enter ketosis (assuming you ingest carbs) and your body will target your muscles for weight loss. Your body shuts down primary functions, you feel like **** and you'll lose massive amounts of muscle and be incredibly unhealthy for it.

An all around terrible idea you just promoted.

Meanwhile, fasting will preserve muscle far, far, far better and has a host of beneficial health benefits.

Your post was completely ignorant, it had zero basis in reality, it was completely your misinformed opinion and I need to emphasize to everyone reading that every single word you wrote is the exact opposite of being correct. There is no truth or value in any part of your post and the whole thing should not only be disregarded but done so in a shameful embarrassed way, as if someone was suggesting to only drink Ocean salt water or some other absolutely ridiculous idiocy.

To reiterate some points here:

When you're fasting, no damn calories (i.e. no ****ing fruit, no veggies, nothing to break the fast), within 2-3 days for men and a little quicker for women, your body will switch from burning glucose to ketones for fuel.

Your body can almost entirely run without glucose, but the brain does need a little bit. Your brain does run somewhat on ketones (which is why some people claim to get the opposite of brain fog when keto-eating or fasting, they report being more clear-headed -- something I would say from experience is true), but there are some functions that need glucose.

This little bit, for people who eat no carbs (keto diet) or are fasting, will come from protein breakdown through a process called gluconeogenesis. It's not much but for strict bodybuilder types -- it's getting that small amount of glucose it needs from breaking down muscle (or if you're eating a keto diet, from the protein in your meals).

Much of this is offset during a fast because when you are in a fasted state there is a huge spike in protein-sparing hormones, Growth Hormone being one of the primary ones (there are tons of other beneficial hormonal changes, but it's beyond my level of expertise). This is kind of spit-balling, but from my personal experience, with actual non-water weight lost, my best guess is that easily the Lion's Share is fat, with maybe 10% being lean weight. You can drop maybe 1/2-2/3 pounds a day, so the lean weight lost during a fast isn't going to be that big a deal, certainly not what some people are suggesting.

I suspect this is why some people promote the PSMF, something I'm not overly familiar with, but there is a small influx of protein and my guess is the idea is that you eat small enough amounts to not entirely break the fast, protein doesn't spike insulin nearly as much as carbs, you get some of the benefit of fasting, you probably remain in ketosis, you're burning primarily fat and the little protein you need for gluconeogenesis is coming from the small amount of protein you're eating.

I also suspect the small influx of calories does limit the full potential of the health benefits from the fast in some way but for someone who ONLY wants to lose weight and preserve muscle (i.e. someone cutting after a bulk), a PSMF might be the better option. For someone who wants maximized health benefits and auto****y, a water fast likely is better.

I'd also chime in that for a long-term thing, you can probably eat PSMF alotlonger without hassle -- I've never gone 11+ days with a pure water fast and the idea of going 30 concerns me, but tons of people go weeks PSMF without hassle or worry.

Overall, I incorporate fasting into my usual routine. Usually fasting IF style most days and 24+ hours once a week or so. I suspect there are benefits of this for bodybuilding muscle purposes, with the hormones, and I think health wise it's a good deal. However, if my goal was to cut fat and preserve muscle for an extended period -- I would likely look into a PSMF.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Hmm, I don't really want to be argumentative, but that study is a straw man in this context. Six months of severe and unbroken calorie restriction, with terrible diet content. I don't think anyone is suggesting OP follow that protocol.

OP is suggesting a 30 day fast. That's a long ass fast, and you can't just assume all the benefits of a short fast will remain. It would be as fair to point out that 30 days isn't far off the 46 days that literally killed a hunger striker as to use the Minnesota Experiment to characterize calorie restriction.

BTW, you can eat some veggies and be in ketosis. I'm on 1200 calories a day, 60 or so grams of carbs, and I'm in ketosis. It's something you can just have tested, not hard to find out.

For you guys who do IF and fasting, why is it that my stomach gets DESTROYED as soon as i break my fast? Literally getting the squirts and have bad stomach pains as soon as i eat anything.
Its pretty weird and kind of worrisome. Never used to get this when eating the "regular way".

Any thoughts?
