It's one of those things that you can't really protect against

No one knows who is going to strike, no one knows when they will strike. Although some of the students joked about him being the next "school shooter"

It's a shame that there's no effective way to counter this from happening

I just bought a new gun last week.

Since buying it I have had zero urges to shoot up a school or church.

I have had some pretty strong urges to go out and shoot a turkey though.

Maybe it isn't the guns? Maybe some people are just nuts?

Bring back mental institutions and the labotomy imho.

If this kid was locked up in shady acres and labotomozed at age 10 none of this would have happened.

Growing up I had both retired cops and retired military at my school that took teaching as a second career and a supplement to their pensions. Neither they, nor the military recruiters that came to our school, were authorized to carry firearms on school grounds despite their immense training, experience, and vetting.

One saving grace could be(and I'm not sure how it's like for Americans today) but this news now registers like an air strike in the middle east where you hear that a hospital has been obliterated with 100's of fatalities. On some level it registers with you but it seems to happen with such regularity that it just passes over you. In time this will happen in the states I imagine, the further away from the site the event happens the less interest it will garner. In time the glorification of these shootings will dwindle. Colombine and the whole narrative that stemmed from it, imo, gave strange loner outcasts a bit of hope in a world where they had lost all of it. Maybe when the media stops the whole Hollywood narrative these kids won't see a school shooting as a way of exerting power for the first time in their life.

Then again, I am mid 20's and Colombine is one of the first news stories I remember, at least international news stories so by this stage I am 'bored'(for want of a better word) of these stories. Elliot Rodger was the last shooting I fell victim of the obsession in the media(In fairness I was living in Isla Vista when it happened) but I am sure some lonely, isolated and bullied 16 year old kid is watching that shooting today and getting inspiration and encouragement to act out his revenge.

I dont get why banning certain guns are such an issue. Yes, the criminals will still have guns. And if you have bad luck you might get robbed on the way home. But it's not the crips and the bloods who are doing school shootings. But criminals will always find a way to get guns, if it wasn't a gun it would be a knife. Europe does have school shootings, yes. Not often, but they do occour. But most weapons allowed are hunting rifles or a hunting shotgun, or w/e it's called. Yes, I might get run over by a truck in europe, but we can set up protection in busy streets with metal poles etc. I atleast wont have to be afraid to go to school. Becuase the nerdy kid wont know how to get a gun, and even if he knew where to go (obviously the ghetto), he would most likely just get robbed or ripped of, and would not be able to get a handgun and shoot up the school.

The only reason you want to keep your assult rifles is because they all dream of the day the goverment does something and they get to fight the evil goverment with their rifles.

Full auto AK47s are illegal in california

I recovered over a dozenas a cop and responded to dozens if not more shooting calls involving full auto AKs.

Tell more about how banning certain guns will stop shootings?

but this thread is about school shootings. I just said criminals will always have guns. But they are killing eachother, unfrotunately innocent people might get caught in the crossfires. But it's not them who are shooting up highschools with innocent teens

Canada has done a good job making guns hard to attain but still being accessible by the public, we have rarely seen school shootings and when they do happen -- the restrictions have prevented them from being catastrophic..

I love guns, I had the best time of my life shooting them -- but you guys need to do more to make it harder for psychotic little teenagers to flaunt them on instagram then go shoot up a school. I know a lot of gun lovers are gonna hate but this isn't happening anywhere else, so maybe it's time to change something. I'm not saying take away the guns, but maybe make it a little harder for a teenager to get ahold of high-caliber semi-auto rifles with large magazines and tons of ammo.

obviously, if they really wanted to they will find a way. But limiting the choices they have to acess a gun can scare away alot of people who think it is to hard. And removing assult rifles and making it harder to get a handgun can severely help with the problem America is having. For example here in Sweden a guy went into a school and wanted to kill a bunch of people. Butbecuase he was an FA autist, all he had was a sword. So yes, unfortunately 2 people died. But if he had gotten his hands on a gun things could have been much worse

Exactly. Maybe they can't get a gun, but if I really wanted to, I can go on google and look up how to make an improvised explosive out of chit I find at a hardware store. If someone wants to cause damage and terror, they are going to do it one way or another. You're simply taking away one of the tools.

Initially if banned guns may be difficult to get for some, but eventually the demand will be there and getting a weapon will be like getting illegal drugs. Just have to know someone. Just about anyone can figure out how to get some narcotics today in a short amount of time.

And how do you do that without restricting the rights of law abiding citizens? We have a 2nd amendment for a reason and it includes AR15s probably even more than handguns.

The fact is that the police dropped the ball on this, several reports were done by the school and his mother and yet nothing was done about him. It doesnt matter how many gun laws you have on the books if they dont get enforced. Again the only true way to stop a shooting is to have a law abiding citizen armed with the skill and training to use equal and opposite force to stop the threat

Its sorta a ****ty situation where I'm not really sure there is an answer on how to stop it. One thing is it seems like there is always warning signs that people ignore. If a kid sees something they gotta say something. Let the police look into it. If the kid is troubled then get them help. IMO this is a mental health issue. They expelled this kid for some reason. Is expelling kids really the answer? Sure they might be times that it is the answer but trying to figure out what is going on and let them work through their issues could also be the answer. But.... that costs money and its easier for the administration of the school to tell the kid to **** off so its not their problem anymore.
Concealed carry legal and allowed. Those who want to, do. Same as, get this, everywhere else that is not a criminal empowerment zone. Nobody "gives" anybody a gun. Unless they are paid professional security, in which case they may be issued a gun to use for the duration of the job.

They even knew about this guy ahead of time and knew he might do this.

I mean do people really think a guard is going to be able shoot in a crowd with kids running away? dont think it quit works like that.
Who the **** said anything about forcing teachers to do anything?

Who said armed security guards need to be in uniform and known? That substitute teacher or janitor or admin assistance that got hired last week, guess why they are really there and what they are packing...hmmm

I mean do you really think having somebody that can shoot back is going to be worse than unarmed fish in a barrel? Do you even real life?

You guys are literally devaluing human life by indicating again and again that shooting your stupid guns takes priority over preventing guns deaths.

Negs from Ameri****s have no effect btw
Don't be a retard. Or do you really think it's meaningful that a country with hundreds of millions of guns means more guns are used than a country with extremely restrictive laws and very low firearms ownership? Why don't you compare "homicides" (all kinds) and violent crime, then compare across time before/after your gun ban in your country, then compare the US vs gun ownership over time?

Here's a pro tip: Fewer guns will not correlated to lower crime rates

Not often, but they do occour. But most weapons allowed are hunting rifles or a hunting shotgun, or w/e it's called. Yes, I might get run over by a truck in europe, but we can set up protection in busy streets with metal poles etc. I atleast wont have to be afraid to go to school. Becuase the nerdy kid wont know how to get a gun, and even if he knew where to go (obviously the ghetto), he would most likely just get robbed or ripped of, and would not be able to get a handgun and shoot up the school.
Do you know why most people have no "black market" gun connections? It's because guns are sold pretty much everywhere in the USA, at Walmart, at sporting goods stores, gun stores, etc. It's really easy to get firearms in the USA,legally.

You know what's not available legally in the USA? Heroin. Meth. Molly. Acid. How many upstanding college students in America do you think aren't a phone call away from a person that either has those things for sale or knows someone who has those things for sale? There is an enormous black market for illicit drugs in this nation, and it's not like you have to be some hardened criminal to find them.

If firearms were made illegal on a mass scale in the USA, the same thing would happen to guns as has happened to drugs. Everyone would "know a guy who knows a guy" and black market firearms would be readily available. There are hundreds of millions of firearms in the USA, and almost all of them are unregistered. If you think an FA Elliot Rodger wannabe would have no way to find a Glock and a few magazines if it was suddenly illegal to possess guns, you are living in a fantasy world.

Obviously im not agoverment official. But I would start by limiting the sales or assult weapons, have you to take a long course with several months of training, background check, psychology background check. Have limited sales for persons without a military or police background, etc etc. And ofcourse since the gun culture in america is so ingrained, it's hard. But you have to start somewhere. Basically start from scratch.
