haven't read any posts, came to say that I rent a nice place that will shortly be for sale for ~20 years' worth of take-home salary for an average earner locally. whole housing market is a scam, not just renting. I couldn't afford to buy the place I currently rent as I'd have no money for food after mortgage, semi srs

You're right they are theives.
However there's no risk - anything brakes I get my landlord to fix. So you save some solid cash - never have to repair anything - mold discovered sue - dishwasher brakes they replace. So its nice.
comes down to how long you want to commute to work everyday. 2 hours in the car per day u can have a nice house. I am in the car 15 min

brb i make over 1200 (after mortgage and utilities are paid) a month for doing fuk all. all i normally have to do is cash the checks, and make sure the bills are paid on time.

I disagree with opie. Having a house is great, if you're set on staying in whatever place your house is. Otherwise it's a haven for break-ins, property tax, and a bunch of other stuff, added onto the fact that it's sitting there un-utilised. Apartments bring in opportunity, you rent a place wherever you wanna build your career at. When you're done with it, you just leave. Simply as that, no obligations.

I just got a studio (600 square foot one) for 700 a month that shares no walls and it's doable. I agree completely that sharing walls in apartments is the worst thing on the planet. The place I live is above a big garage in a neighborhood that's all doctors, cardiologists, etc.
The American dream of owning a home in places like California is gone if you don't make really good money.
Also, lol at taxes in this state. Pay massive amount of taxes and the little you take home goes towards rent. I wish rent could be pre-tax. At least then I'd save hundreds a month on my taxable income.

The assumption is that your rent would be less than your mortgage and home owning costs.
Houses arn't the greatest investment anymore. If you can get reasonable rent for lower than a mortgage, then you have a lot of extra money to invest or put into other investments. Meanwhile houses can be money pits and you're stuck doing all the work yourself or paying someone.
I'm all for home ownership but owning a house is not always optimal. There are many factors to consider and this isn't really a black or white decision. I lived in an apartment for 3 years saving $400-600 a month just on the mortgage plus all maintenance was covered. That was another $400-600+ I was able to put into my stock, mutual funds and whatever that I've been getting great returns on.

I'm not sure what markets are like where you are, but around here rent isn't really much or any cheaper than a modest house. My mom just spent months looking for a single bedroom apartment that will only be about $300 per month cheaper than my 3/2.5/2 house built in 2011.

I have not read the whole thread; but I have rented in the past and I was paying something like $1000/ month for a small, 1br apartment in downtown Ottawa.
The only pro thing about renting is that landlord is only a phone call away for any problems; not to mention I was walking distance from work. Of course, one of the cons are you're throwing money away month after month.
With owning a home, I pay something around $1400/month for my mortgage; plus all the utilities that go with it. It adds up.
