Can someone provide some reading into pump shotguns being unreliable?
Can't link it since arfcom is blocked at work, but it's a thread by Hendersonsomething. It's that Battlefield Vegas range.

He has threads about all sorts of stuff and what breaks, how long stuff lasts, what's junk etc.


Basically the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500s were lasting about a week before something broke iirc. The M4 has been non-stop beast mode never fails.


I'll find the thread later tonight after the gym if you don't find it by then.

Is that only on newer 870s? I've got one that's older than dirt and I've never had any issues with it. I've killed a lot of pheasants with it. Or maybe it's been polished from all the years of use.

Yep just the newer ones. If I was looking for a shotgun, first place I'd check is surplus store for old po po trade-ins.

huh, go figure. Thankfully I've had no issues with my Mossy 500. Of course, it's not my most shot gun at all either, but it always felt pretty solid.


edit: it's my only shotgun, but not the firearm I shoot anywhere near the most.

Basically anything newer Remington is thought to be garbage these days including the 870 and Rem 700. Their quality took a nose dive after being bought by that private equity group.

Can confirm my 870 sucks. I was having failures to extract and to eject. Changed to volquartsen extractor and polished the chamber. Now only failures to extract occasionally. Did some more reading apparently the area right before the chamber needs to be polished. Did that gun functioned 100% but very weak ejection only tested about 50-60 rounds of buckshot and birdshot. I bought a Beretta 1301 tactical recently and that has been awesome. Currently waiting to get my Aridus stock adapter to add a magpul SGA stock and Riser. Would definitely recommend the 1301. I believe my 870 was made in 2008 so I'd definitely avoid the newer ones but I also heard the ones currently being produced are way better than the ones made right after freedom group took over in 2007. If I bought another 870 it would have to be a old police model.

I'm definitely not an expert, but the 500s we were issued were absolute tanks. They were short barreled with no stock, just a pistol grip and completely stock. We beat those things to hell, and who knows how long they had currently been in service. We only had a single issue with one, and it was after the user got the barrel plugged up after it went muzzle first into mud. He thought it was cleared, went to breach, and the barrel blew up. Literally banana peeled. But that's obviously not a mechanical issue.

I don't know anything about that range, but claiming they only lasted a week? No way.

Playing devil's advocate here, but I'd be inclined to believe it based on round count. We had M16s and M4s that were super beat to chit - literally silver surfers - that functioned great and never went down. Their actual round count was probably under 10-15k though. I'm assuming your 500s were similar - carried often but relatively low round count. Compare that to a shooting range where you have guys putting hundreds of rounds through the thing every day non-stop.

Yeah my 870 is from 2004 and works like a charm. However, I doubt it has went through more than 600 rounds.

Prefer the BPS so use that more often.

I've got a 930 that has given me zero issues across a broad range of different ammo. From reading on the internets it's a flawed model and i prob wouldn't buy it again.

Valid point, but we definitely put a decent amount of rounds through the 500s. A two day breaching range would go through hundreds and hundreds of shells per gun, and we did several of them (as well as other shotgun related ranges). I just don't buy them claiming these shotguns are only lasting a week.

It's funny this conversation came-up today. I was actually just sitting down disassembling my 870 for that exact reason. Took it out to the range this weekend it was giving me that issue a few times, it's always been well looked after/cleaned, etc. Purchased mine in August 2016.

I was at the RI state house last night until 230 AM. 3rd to last to testify. Yellow shirt 2nd Amendment crew was out in force. Demanding Moms got smoked. Bad.

I will have to more details as to what parts break in our Mossberg's and Remington's but it's fair to say that the "low budget" model of each lasts about the same amount of time on the range. One doesn't outshine the other and they all last about the 2-4 weeks on average before suffering from parts failure that takes the weapon off the line."

To be honest, because the Benelli M4 has never failed, we've never purchased the other models.

It would be fair to say that using the lowest daily round count and then estimating down (instead of rounding up), I believe it's fair to say that the Benelli M4 has seen at least 40,000 through it since it started out here on the range.
There's actually a lot of shotgun talk in the AR15 thread since that was the first, the shotgun thread came later - along with others for AKs, Optics and some other stuff I think too.

Some of those issues seem related to noob shooters.

The BPS jam error for example only happens if you "short pump it", but maybe jam after jam bends something internally.

To be fair one of the reasons I love the gun is because it doesn't kick the round out into my arm.
