He took the packages to a Fedex facility and shipped them from there, plenty of surveillance cameras at those. Once they had a timestamp of when he dropped them off they would've been able to get footage of him and more than likely the vehicle he drove.

I've been out of the loop, but I heard on the radio that he blew himself up while I was grabbing coffee this morning.

Was there any particular people he was targeting?

As much as I disagree with how the unabomber went about conveying his "message"... he didn't target just random people. He was also a genius who went to Harvard... got his PhD etc etc.
