What other activities besides gym can feed my vanity while also punish my body to satisfy my somewhat masochist delights?

That's called having a hobby OPie. While you are right, some do have the body/self image issues to the point of being a socially awkward, most average above average miscers who lift are OK'ish folks. It's no different from video gaming/photography/running/cycling/hiking/climbing/racing/etc - whatever hobby/obsession people having these days.

With that being said - it's better than being obsessed which filter to pick for your insta selfie or which character to level up in your WoW game.

Even the one bodybuilder who made it into the mainstream and became a legend had some issues. Arnolds brother died in a car accident and he was on drink and drugs, spent time in mental institutions and a prison in austria. Rumor has it ,he deliberately crashed his car to kill himself. That sort of serious **** tends to run in families. Arnold certainly impulse control issues, when it comes to sex. He was known as a giant douche and massively arrogant when young, and there are all sorts of stories said about him. I know someone who I have no reason to doubt who competed with him and told me how he almost got his head caved in several times for throwing his weight around in gyms in the UK before he moved over to the states. Someone who is like that is covering major insecurities. He fuked that maid, and basically ruined his own image that he had cultivated for years. . And frankly a man in his position can get someone to pull women for him for sex and no one would ever know.Instead he fuked some chubby maid. Those are not the actions of a man who is in complete control. When someone does something and you think WTF in your mind, that is a clear sign someone is a few cans short of a six pack.

And frankly I could write a book on the strangeness amongst some of the members in my gym, a hardcore bodybuilding gym. Not one of them has not cheated on his wife . Two have tried to kill themselves. one by hanging, actually tried to hang himself at home and the wife found him. I have a personality disorder and ptsd and am on a special register with the police due to violence , another guy has serious anger problems even at 50 years old, and threw a man through a shop window for bumping into him in the street,He is now recieving compulsory court ordered anger management counselling. Someone else is a heroin addict. We all have OCD. Yet ours is a gym where people compete in bodybuilding and powerlifting. One guy competes all over the world in powerlifting meets. Another guy cannot go into a crowded place like a bar, last time he went in one he pulled a mans arm out of it's socket for bumping into him.Another guy everyone else thinks is a serial killer,he has been known to bring prostitutes into the gym to fuk them after work,if a woman even smiles at him,he will stalk her. Been to court over it.
I bang trannies.

if you have time at the gym to over analyze others there, you're probably a nonlifting ******* yourself, which is a mental problem in itself

There is a reason the fitness industry is widely regarded as toxic and it's because the vast majority of people involved in the industry are part of one of two groups

Group 1: Low self-esteem. Got into lifting because they had low self-esteem from being either a fat phuck or a skinny dweeb

Group 2: Narcissists - Instagram/youtube crowd

There is a small % that are part of the third group which is made up of science nerds and people actually interested in health. But its an on overwhelmingly small minority.

Lou Ferrigno has said that most bodybuilders have/had a dysfunctional relationship with their father. Getting big and freaky is a subconscious atempt to gain some sort of respect or validation or at least attention from their father. Like screaming "Look at me! I'm a man now dad!"

I'd say there's probably some truth to this.

I'm part of neither. I started lifting for sports and now I lift because I have nothing else to do.

I'm pretty strong and I'm autistic. I'd still be autistic if I didn't lift so IDK what the problem is.

Not necessarily but it is common. Ive always been pretty sociable but i started off fat and definitely had body image issues otherwise i wouldnt have been in the gym. Getting lean and being bigger just felt right and improved my life because i wasnt doing it to mask a problem, i was doing it to fix a problem and then life ended up being pretty great for a while. It was more a positive reinforcement loop. I started doing ijt and then people started treating me better as i got in better shape and i started progressing and getting stronger and then it became what i was known for and a big part of who i was and now its just how i live my life. Cant really see myself giving jt up. I quit for 6 months and i was depressed as hell the whole time got fat and started drinking every day.
