How is IQ measured though without tests? Or are they taking a test sample size and deeming the average score indicative of the entire population?

yea, i dont believe in iq tbh. i think it could fluctuate on something so small as someone having a bad day.

there's tonsss wrong with it.

i also believe there's a threshold where iq becomes a detriment. im fairly certain that iq hasn't been correlated with success up to a certain point.

anything above 150 is generally considered a hindrance.

i think you'd have lots of problems, and most of them stemming from isolation. somebody with an extremely high iq would no doubt be isolated and have isolation related issues

How else should i express the concept that most people have and will never invent something that benefits humanity? Just about everything that makes your life easy was brought into existence by a very few smart people. If it weren't for these people we'd all still be chasing antelope in the Serengeti. Not sure why this rustles people so much. It is what it is.

Btw... you can teach people to take apart and engine and put it back together through repetition. You have to be on another level to be a Tesla, Einstein, Archimedes, Da Vinci, Nash, etc... and come up with unique ideas, build them in the real world, and change humanity forever.

You're still talking about less than 1% of the population. And in many cases you're actually completely wrong. There are many things that have been invented that are just a quantum leap above the current thinking at the time.

I also never claimed i was high IQ. Thanks for assuming I was though

Lol this x1000. So cringeworthy whenever someone says "my IQ was tested...." over the internet. Besides the blatant exaggeration/garbage testing methods....IQ in general is largely a joke, and the true geniuses (e.g the late Stephen Hawking) are almost universally quick to denounce/mock the concept.

Whoever was talking about the Indian mathematician up there- and I assume this is referring to Ramanujan, who died in 1920- I highly, highly doubt he ever took any kind of IQ test, giving him the "highest recorded IQ".

They simply try to estimate. No different than what they've done for Da Vinci and Archimedes (IMO the smartest person to have ever lived). Ramanujan was one of those rare people that had something going on in his brain that allowed him to see and do things that 99.9% of people couldn't ... even his peers. Reminds me of this guy:

Guy sees numbers as shapes and colors.

nut sure if srs, do you know how much work goes into building stuff in general? You need the people at the low-end of the spectrum to even make innovation possible. The collection of resources, processing of resources, transport of resources etc

good luck building pc's without gold miners, good luck building gold mining machinery without factory workers, good luck transporting any of this without drivers, good luck even having transportation vehicles without maintenance workers, oil workers for fuel, factories for tires, etcetc (this is just a superficial look into what those on the lower-half of the IQ bell curve provide)

WTF does gathering the raw materials for a PC have to do with some high IQ nerd in a lab envisioning something better than a vacuum tube, having an "Ah ha!" moment, and designing an IC thereby bringing modern computing into existence? Without that one nerd you'd never be gathering raw materials to begin with. Modern computing could of died with the vacuum tube computers of the 1940s just like the steam engine did in classical Egypt with Heron.

I watched a video about a guy with downs syndrome. He worked in a restaurant. The owner said he was the hardest worker.

I dont really believe in placing limitations on yourself just because of what other people say.

Because you, the "estimators", or anyone else have no idea how say Newton would perform on a certain test, and there is no way around that.

A: what was Newton's IQ?
B: 190
A: why?
B: ummmmmm.....well he made a lot of original contributions to physics/mathematics.
A: But why does that correlate to a score of 190 on a modern IQ test? Not even a 185? 160? Why 190?
B: ummm well it's a guess...

By quantifying intelligence using the IQ metric, you are basically just defining intelligence to be IQ, which is fine, but there are obviously other definitions of intelligence. Creativity is just one factor that comes to mind. The ironic thing about the "calculating prodigies/savants" like in the above video- people who can calculate what 165,165,165,165,165*165,165,165,165,165 is in a matter of minutes.....are almost never the ones making actual creative contributions to mathematics. Ramanujan being a major exception/fluke. But in general, calculating prodigies are doing almost nothing for the subject.

Quantifying it allows useful things to be done with it. Like putting new recruits for the military in jobs that match their capabilities, which in turn makes for a more efficient military.
