this is not news and is basically how society works in every capitalist country

People just think they are smarter than they are and it's 'society' that keeps them from being top 1%ers, when in reality virtually everyone you and I have every met aren't smart or driven enough to be in the top 1%

Smart people do get to the top and have all the opportunities. Anyone can become a doctor or lawyer starting from nowhere if they're truely that gifted.

These results are skewed though. If you are making more money, of course you have the capacity to save more. Your basic needs are being met. It is why extremely rich people just keep getting richer, and people who make 50k or less a year might not even have 10k in the bank. If i am making 75k a year, I can pay my bills, food, clothes, etc. and put some away, if I am making 20k a year, I can barely even house myself, much less invest or save anything.
This is also why most rich people started from rich (or at least above average) families (Bill Gates and Warren Buffet had millionaire parents already). It is a lot easier to invest and work on projects when you don't have to spend nearly all of your free time working and thinking about how to SURVIVE, not to mention having a support structure that can provide investment money.

Although I guess that it could prove that smarter people make more money. Which I am not arguing with.

Yes. In fact, if you think about it, most of the population lacks a basic understanding of the mathematical, scientific, and engineering breakthroughs of the last 400 years. Most people cannot explain basic physics principles like mechanical advantage. They rely purely on intuition and instinct. They cannot mathematically describe anything they encounter with any appreciable level of detail to be useful for modeling and predicting phenomena.

The problem with our society is the guys in charge aren't listening to people who know better, but they still continue to wield their technology. If you give a monkey a gun, don't expect great results.

But then Misc poster “Starfart” tells us we shouldn’t trust his opinion because he himself - “Starfart” - deems this professor to merely be using “big words” and not saying anything of substance in not only this particular question but in general.

My IQ was measured pretty high when I was a kid. I had to take an IQ test to skip second grade. Anyway, I walk slowly, daydreaming and talking to myself, in grocery stores. My net worth is also dogchit, and I have had no success with women. I have completely failed at life. So that should indicate to you how meaningless IQ is in the grand scheme of things. It is useful for and was only ever intended to be a way to detect learning disabilities, and it is only one of many ways to detect these.

There was also a Field's Medalist, Laurent Schwartz, who formalized the theory of distributions and put the dirac delta function on rigorous footing. His teachers legit thought he was retarded in high school. He would work very slowly and methodically. It turns out being careful is more important than being fast in math. That kid who really understands how to derive the quadratic formula and really "gets it" is a better learner than some whiz kid with a pocket protector who brainlessly memorized the formula and did 2000 problems by rote to master the technique. Mr. Gee Whiz will make an excellent bean counter one day, but the other kid will learn to think deeply and carefully about problems.

Edit: NM after reading more about this, apparently he was an exceptional student. Phucking lol.

Instead of focusing on the man's prestige, and just viewing the above video on its own terms, it does seem to be a rather confusing argument he is making (is it even an argument?). Definitely terminology is being mixed up, as last I checked the US military does not test specifically for IQ. So I am curious what the source is regarding his 83 IQ number as a minimum. Second, he is pretty much equating fit for service in the military with fit to function in society. Huh? Quite the jump there. There are definitely sub-83 IQ individuals out there working in society, so it's unclear what his point is.

the only way i gauge intelligence is by assessing how a particular individual's life varies from the mean/median. for example, an intelligent person isn't going to live a heavily leveraged lifestyle where a slight blip in income wipes them out completely. they're not going to develop a gambling habit or become emotionally invested in events that are largely outside of their control (sports, politcs etc.).
