If you look at the actual net value of payments its only 200-500 dollars more expensive (total) to lease; depending on vehicle. Yet the payments are sometimes a fraction of the cost for owning.

And thats assuming you eventually sell your **** car on the open market; not trade it in the dealer for less. Otherwise the lease is actually cheaper.

Soooo.... significantly less money output (monthly), almost no money down, leave the dealer with a brand new car that you trade in 3 years later for another. Usually no maintenance costs in that time frame

Unless you drive over 15k miles per year or you plan to own for a long time without monthly payments, a lease >>>>>>
Just..no.

Car note? That's leasing under another name. The car is the banks property. When I say cash, I mean cash.

In the real world..nah. Cash is king. You won't get the same base price, however much they will obfuscate to make it look a sweet deal.

It's pretty simple. Throwaway cars that you run hard and put up wet are leased. Cars you want to keep long term are buys. Either way it's gonna cost you money. There is no way to win the vehicle game. It's gonna get you coming or going and anyone who says differently is coping.

What's 7%?

And you think the dealer is letting you lease to be nice? Nah.

I don't need a worked example, it's common sense.

Yes... the payment remains exactly the same over three years (average length of a lease.) That payment also happens to be, in general, 50 percent lower than the payment of a retail auto loan for the same vehicle. No, the manufacturer/finance company is not being a "nice guy," leases help them sell cars because of the reduced payment. It also brings a higher return as the rent charge (you could call it interest for simplicity's sake) stays constant over the life of the lease. With a retail loan the principle is reduced as you pay the loan off therefore the interest is lower and lower as the loan is paid down.

From a consumer standpoint you get a brand new car that will be under warranty for the life of the lease. At the end you turn the vehicle in and pay a disposition fee as well as any mileage you went over the contracted amount and wear and tear. If you "bought" the car you would be responsible for the entire value of the vehicle. This becomes a problem when the value of your vehicle is lower than what you currently owe when you want to trade it in. This will almost always be the case. With a lease you get to turn it in regardless of its equity position and owe nothing further (other than what was stated above.)

If you purchase brand new vehicles, tend to trade them in every few years, and take good care of them it can be a great deal.
Whooahh...

I'm not talking about a car loan. That's what ultra poor/stupid people do. I'm only comparing it to paying cash. Since when did cash mean a loan? What's wrong with people ITT?

You aren't stuck with it at all though. You can sell a car a lot quicker and easier than getting out of a lease. Pure science and reason, there's nothing subjective about it

If you were offered a 0% 5 year auto loan (has been fairly common lately), you'd say no and lock up your capital into a depreciating asset rather than putting the minimum down and letting your money generate solid returns elsewhere? You sound financially illiterate.

So paying cash > lease. We got that.

Where do you stand with financing vs lease?

If that loan is in your hand and not coming from the dealer then it's an argument, but I don't see that working don't the loan company want to know what you are financing?

Point being, the cash price is lower than the loaned money price. I'm certain.

Incredibly complicated, but the lease WILL be made to look more attractive than it really is. Not too many people will read the small print until it's too late, and they've gone over the mileage, found a part not covered, had a balloon payment more than they expected, etc etc..

Keep it simple. And if you need a loan to pay for a car, you can't afford that car.

Leasing is sensible if a car will depreciate more over the same period. Most high end luxury cars are leased.

it's not black or white

also you have greater cash flow from leasing which you can use to make other investments.

a car is NOT an investment whether you lease or buy it.

Only parts that aren't covered are wear and tear items. Tires, brakes pads, rotors, etc. Everything else is covered during a lease.

Very rarely there are some that are, but they are already pricey to start. Like I mentioned before the 2006 Ford GT that has gone up in value. Brand new they were in the mid $100's. Now used they are going for $200k+.

Average new car price in 2016 was $33,000.00. The vast majority of consumers do not pay cash for a new vehicle. Even people who aren't "ultra poor/stupid" choose not to do that because, as another poster said, money is basically free right now.

That might be an option in my future. As long as they have a decent sound system I am game. That is the only reason I purchase vehicles is to add a custom stereo system in it. I just hate the majority of factory sound systems. Though I will say my girl's 16' Jeep Cherokee sounds pretty good with the factory 8" sub in it.

Lot of the newer german/british cars have good sound systems. My jag has a 770W sound system that's really good, as well as some of my other cars have Burmeister & Bang and Olufsen.

I really don't have a need to buy older cars anymore, except I am on the lookout for an E-Type.

Just fuking lmao if you aren't leasing.

brb low payment
brb new car in 3 years
brb not owning depreciating asset
brb warranty
brb brb brb

Only people who make between 40k-100k and think they know everything about money think leasing is bad.
