The incident started with the fan blade failure, and for it to blow out the front cowl in totality like that would have required bouncing around in front of the fan disk, and I'm not seeing anything in pics that indicates this (no marks on the inside of the cowling, no gouges in the other blades, etc.) I think another possibility is that something else blew out the cowling as I've heard speculation of a pressure surge in the deicing system, but I don't know if that's actually possible when ingesting debris at full power FOD'd the missing blade. In that case, the blade broke and the fan lost balance, that would have destroyed the cowling.

Most likely, the fan blade came off, which caused the whole engine to shake violently, which caused the cowl to break apart, and the shrapnel from the cowl is what hit the window and weakened it. Then the window was no longer able to hold the pressure so it burst.

But what do I know, I'm just a woman.
Are you an AME?...

Anyways, good piloting but nothing that I wouldn’t expect from any professional pilot. I’ve been in some “emergencies”
Including an engine failure at V1, loss of cabin pressure at 40,000’ (not immediate but dove hard), bird strikes and severe icing. my colleagues all have crazy stories too. The one factor than never changes in our stories are hearing the pilots calmly go through checklists the way they are trained to do in simulations.

Edit: to clarify, I have the same opinion about the Hudson too. Also, the “ignoring the oil light” and similar comments are hilarious (srs)

I'm generally a confused individual but why is she a hero? Was the plane not still fully controllable and with another working engine? What was she supposed to do? Not do her job and ignore her training and flip that thing into the nearest skyscraper?

It's not like she entered a burning plane by choice to save people and landed it (or tried to). She was at her job, her plane malfunctioned, she had no choice but to continue doing her job. She did it well and did not let others down, so good on her and I hope she is my next pilot but hero?

The dudes in Chernobyl who, instead of running, dove into the radioactive cooling water to open some drain, preventing a massive disaster and receiving lethal doses of radiation were heroes (and almost nobody knows their names) but a guy responsible for calming a reactor as part of his job, who for example finds himself in a room with the reactor freaking out, AND cannot get out because a door is jammed, is not a hero if he does what he is supposed to do to save himself and others.

But again, she sounds like a kickarse pilot.

I feel there's a few holes in your story when it comes to the theory on what led to the catastrophic failure. Since its a theory I'd rather wait til the actual occurrence gets reported, and then read that. Hopefully the Misc will report on it.

^ thats absolutely false.

In engineering, airplanes get a marker of 1, meaning that the tolerance for the parts are always high. Your CD player has a marker of zero. While airplanes have a marker of 1, some of the parts used are 0. The parts that are zero are frequently replaced. Engine failure here was probably due to a new inspector.

I’m a load master for the C-130J in the USAF. I’ve had an inflight emergency where the booster hydraulic system leaked really bad spraying mist everywhere. The pilots as well as myself remained calm and training just kicked in on what to do to handle the situation.

That and there are social forces that tend to drive men towards training their hand-eye coordination more than women (sports, video games), but on a genetic level, women are better designed for that kind of crap.

I understand being called a hero if you have a catastrophic incident and manage to land safely (a spin and recover/all engines fail/landing gear doesnt come down) but this seems to fall into a category of "expected recovery".

I havent followed this story very closely so am I missing something? (srs)...
you are correct.

what happened here is trained for regularly in the simulator

however in the moment it is always much more stressful. is she a hero? the sheeple will never say otherwise. they would not allow her NOT to be called a hero

but seeing as we are trained for such emergencies on the regular I personally don't find it heroic, just another tough, albeit significant day on the job

Yes I am not sure why people are saying she is great for not losing her mind, she is a pilot, it is her job.

I wouldn't expect Doctors, Nurses to lose the plot if someone was having a cardiac arrest or bleeding to death... just because the average Joe might.

ok I'm not trying to hate but a lot of what you said is not true.

firstly engines don't reduce power when the other fails, they increase it. assume you're operating near your max ceiling. you want to remain high as long as possible (assume no decompression, not like was the case here). if you reduce thrust your speed will decay even faster with only 1 engine.. so you'll need to increase it on the remaining one to buy to time. if you mean for the sake of structural integrity, planes can handle TOGA in a one engine out scenario with full rudder deflection so wouldn't be for that either. perhaps this is c130 specific but it doesn't make sense to me.

Also it isn't done automatically you have to change the thrust gate yourself.

secondly in my previous post yes she wasn't necessarily a hero but in that situation there are a fukton more things to be done than 'make an atc call and land'

you aren't a pilot and you haven't flown the 737 so I'll cut you some slack, but you've been around planes so you should know better than to minimise pilots responsibilities in such a situation to merely putting the autopilot on and making an atc call

perhaps if you were the one responsible for doing the flying instead of sitting behind the guys up front you would have a different attitude

Yes, pilots are trained and training kicks in during emergencies. They have checklists for a reason but give her some credit. It's not the simulator. In the simulator, you're obviously on the ground. Not 30K feet in the air. You still have to have nerves of steel to make sure you execute your training in that life or death situation. Not to mention the other souls on board you're responsible for.

lol at trying to minimilize this like it's an every day occurance.
