The value of human life only became sacrosanct within the last 200 years. Prior to that, human beings were no better than animals (especially those who were weak, poor, defeated).

Take over Munster, declare themselves royalty, legalize polygamy and pass a law saying that unmarried women must say yes to the first bloke that asks to wife them.
Then continue to chit all over the Catholic church at a time when its power was unquestionable.
John of Leiden taking a dozen+ wives while people were starving to death.
I wish there was more to read about this.
Wouldn't go as far to say the torture was justified, but at the same time, I get it given the context
John of Leiden could have tried pulling this chit in most 3rd world countries of the past decade and would have prolly faced a similar fate

The Iron Maiden and pear of anguish were also pretty grusome.
They would should a pear shape metal ball into the persons anus or vagina and turn a screw that was attached to it. It would expand with every turn and eventually rip the orifices and cause major internal damage. The people didn’t die until days later. Usually used on homosexuals and adulterers
There was some brutal **** in the medieval days

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keelhauling
A form of punishment once meted out to sailors at sea. The sailor was tied to a line that is looped beneath the vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship, and dragged under the ship's keel, either from one side of the ship to the other, or the length of the ship (from bow to stern).
The common supposition is that keelhauling amounted to a sentence of either death by extreme torture, or minimally a physical trauma likely to permanently maim. The hull of the ship was usually covered in barnacles and other marine growth, and thus, keelhauling would typically result in serious lacerations, of which the victim could later suffer infection and scarring. If the victim was dragged slowly, his weight might lower him sufficiently to miss the barnacles, but this method would frequently result in his drowning. There was also a risk of head trauma, especially if the ship was in motion.
Pretty sure this occurred during the "golden age of pirates" ~200-300 years ago.
