- have ONLY your name on the house/apartment/condo etc so she can't screw you
- buy ONLY what you want in furniture since you are the one paying for it
- stay away from soy milk, you are already beta enough telling her how much you have saved up --- don't keep pushing it
- set the expectation that SHE is moving in with YOU unless she puts up some coin

I'm not sure about that m8. I'm about to do a living/dining room mostly from West Elm and it's almost impossible to keep the budget below 10k.

I think this comes down to who wants the expensive furniture, if OP wants quality chit and is comfortable spending 10k on it then this thread is pointless. If the GF is the one who wants quality furniture while OP would settle for IKEA or similar then there's an issue and OP needs to shut that chit down immediately.

Girls like money and security. If you are going to use that as a way to hit at a higher number then expect to have to use it from time to time. This is a fairly low risk way to do so since you can prove its your stuff with receipts.

If you guys are serious you could always get it as a loan (most furniture places have them low interest 3 year plans) then just make her pay half the bill every month. Tell her your savings are your savings and you don't want to tap into them but if you want furniture we can buy together and we each make half the payment every month. Risk is if the relationship ends good luck getting her to finish paying for the furniture. But then you have more leverage for taking the furniture with you.

I dated a girl once that knew I had some money and expected me to pay for everything. And I honestly don't typically mind because I have it and the girls I date don't. So its not that big of a deal. That said she would tell me how nice it was to date a guy with money because she was used to dating losers that she had to pay for dinner with. That started too annoy me. So paid you your way with other guys but expect me to pay for you? I started insisting that we split checks and she complained that I had way more money than her even though she had a decent job so I should pay. Not super relevant but kinda reminded me of your situation.

But lol @ everyone in here acting like 10-20k is a lot for furniture. If you're buying pieces of any decent quality, you'll easily burn through 10k fully furnishing an average-sized house. A full bedroom set made with real wood with quality fasteners etc could run a couple thousand for the bottom echelon of the high-quality tier. However, it'll still be going strong a decade after the particleboard Ikea BS is thrown into a landfill

I guess it depends on the pieces and size of place you're furnishing. I spent about 10k this January replacing all the furniture in my place. I know furniture can be expensive as fuk or cheap as fuk, but lots of good stuff in between there. West Elm has 30% off all the time, even on sofas. Oh well, glad I'm not in OPs shoes, LMAO

You are going to end up paying for it regardless if you stay together. You have $100k, she has $0. IDK why everyone is focused on the cost of the furniture, that's almost irrelevant.

You want to go on nice vacations, buy nice things for the place, pay a mortgage eventually, send the kids to school etc. etc. Eventually you will end up payinganyway, even if it isn't explicit - because you are a couple. I'm not saying you should be paying now though, just keep in mind that's probably running through her head.

But that isn't the point really. The critical point here is herattitude towards finances and fairness/equity. It is the expectation and lack of appreciation that bothered me the most, the default expectation that my money was hers or eventually would be anyway. That is a difference in philosophy and personal responsibility.

Depending on your country or state, you become common law very shortly after co-habitation with a woman.

It amazes me how ignorant most men are of the law. Depending where you live, it makes absolutely no difference whose name the house/condo is under. You can put it under your dog's name if you want - she is still entitled to 50% of it's value, including all of the furniture and electronics, even if you aren't married.
