Why? Do people not have the common sense to know that something can and will go wrong some day?

Common sense? lol?

I had to tell a woman a few days ago that the cost of the medication she needs to live is $26,000. (Her condition wasn't preventable... in b4 fat people need to take care of themnselves)

The same company that produces this medication recently suffered a tank in their stock price because their drug cures the problem instead of treating it... take a moment to think about how messed up that is.

American medicine is ****ed on every level and an embarrassment on the world stage. Don't care if you're Dem or Repub... if you've bought into the 2 party system you've contributed.

This thread has got me thinking a lot. I am extremely behind on where I should be in life. Kinda bums me out but theres nothing I can do but change it from now on. I know I should never compare myself to anyone but seeing how young some of you guys are and how well you're doing makes me embarrassed about my life/situation. Anyone willing to help out or give me some times to save money/invest in others? pm's preferably.

The pharmaceutical industry is a billion dollar industry.

There's a reason there's a focus on lessening the pain or effect through meds and never about curing or prevention

I totally agree about how American medicine is down the tubes, but who was GOOD insurance? I have a high deductible plan provided by my work, and after I meet it, they pay for everything. Had a 30k emergency surgery last year, and I only paid my deductible.

I feel the same way.

All it takes is a divorce and 30-40% of your check in child support/alimony to break a person.

Hell, I went from having everything to living with a room mate.

Top that off with maybe an ER visit, car wreck, etc.

for 50% of people in the US saving means living below the living standards you would have if you went on food stamps
brb starving myself so I can have $2000 in the bank at the end of the year. lol
the real answer is go to college and/or increase your income

My generation is a bunch of poverty cuckholds, who like to blame the baby boomers for their own financial incompetence. In some ways it angers me that people can be this awful at managing finances. On the other hand I feel great to be so far ahead of the normie curve.

Why do they need to?

We're living in a time when you can just go create a GoFundMe account and raise 10k for funeral services for your criminal, drug-dealing son, who got shot by the cops after a 30 minute chase.

Why save money when you can swindle it from your FB homies by playing on their emotions?
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

I bought my first house at age 25 and fully paid off my current house last year.

If you're not pretty financially secure by 30, you're doing it wrong.
Imma call bs

Job at 14.
Not making over minimum wage
Definitely not 40 hours

So youre making what 1 to 200 a week?

By 18 labor laws are different and you can work 40 hours a week. Where did you work here?

Even if you go to community college youre looking at 20k a year for a state college for junior and senior year. So, 40k..and you would have used all of what you saved up

So, youre at 0 in the bank and most likely a new job. Or maybe not a new job.. But only way i see that is if you live with your parents. But you still prob dont have enough for a house

Also, lets be real.. Poor homes are very tumultuous. You think poor people are really happy go lucky? Which would affect grades throughout all of that

Not saying your story is not doable but im sensing some padding youre prob not going into

First off, don't feel embarrassed. Every single person in this thread has lived a different life and has had different situations. Maybe you had more responsibilities growing up, had it rougher, maybe you just weren't were responsible.

The truth is, that it doesn't matter. What's happened has happened, and you can only focus on the now and future.

You should only invest with money that you can afford to lose. You should save enough money so that you have enough liquidated funds to last you 6 months if you had no stream of income at a minimum. After this criteria is fulfilled, you should move onto investing. Personally i'm not too knowledgeable in investing, and i'm sure others can help you out with that.

In terms of saving, there are PLENTY of ways. Here are some examples :

- Live below your means. Get that $1 non branded x item over that $3 branded x item, when there isn't a noticeable difference.
- Create a budget, so you know exactly where all of your money is going into.
- Leave your credit/debit card at home, and only carry a certain amount of cash on you so you don't splash on random chit.
- Reduce your expenses, whether that be having less shower time, being more mindful about the amount of electricity you use etc.

Take my advice with a grain of salt since I am only 17, but I can assure you that these tips will help you get started. I am fortunate enough to get the roof over my head paid for, food etc. I do pay all my expenses in terms of transport, gym etc so im not a complete *******. However, I understand that this is not a reason for me to splash all my cash on stupid chit. I save almost all my income, and am probably looking at about 30k savings just before I turn 18.

It's about how much you save, not how much you earn.

Of course you would need to pay for a lot more chit compared to someone like me, but the tips I have gave should be saving you money regardless. Good luck brah.

Edit : For those who are wondering how I have that much money, I tutor people and get about $40-45 a hour, as well as student loans, normal job etc
I'll see you on Mount Olympus

But in that time you must not have your car smashed and need to be replaced. No-one in the family should get sick enough to need to go to the hospital for more than a day or two. Nobody should be arrested for something minor, requiring bail and legal fees. If fired or made redundant, you must not take longer than a month or so to find an equivalent job, and these periods of unemployment can't come more often than every five years or so. Don't work in a job that gets outsourced to China and leaves your city forever. Don't move cities, either. Your house should never be burglarised. You should never be mugged. Neither parent should leave the household. Any one of those things sets the family back a year or more.

In the USA: have a plan, work hard, be lucky for 20 years, and your family can move out of poverty.
I would say for many people (adults/parents) they will live the rest of their days in poverty, HOWEVER, that doesn't mean their kids have to.
There can be honor in working hard and sacrificing while parenting your children to do well in school or other talents so that they can break out.

Just because the adults in the family get sick or bankrupt, that doesn't condemn their children to lifelong poverty status.

They cant cover unexpected $400 emergency, but you can be sure they have spent $1000s on tattoos, cigs, rims for their cars and vape

I was going to poke at this a little in my post earlier, but just reading a little it's more of a people don't feel they could afford the emergency. Not that they actually have >$400. Article reads like they were asked if they could "afford" a $400 emergency and 40% said no.

But like i also said, this points to 60% can "handle" a $400 emergency, so i wonder what those stats are elsewhere.

At the same time, we need to actually gain an understanding of how they actually chose the sample. Iirc we are only told it was a sample of 12k ? ( which is a pissening figure to make a judgement of "40% of Americans" ), and what kind of area we were collecting data from etc. This has a HUGE impact on the statistic that we gain at the end

edit : This post was more about the fact that people are taking this % and applying it USA as a whole

This too. Honestly, i read the first sentence, saw it was more of a "hey, can you afford a $400 emergency?," and it was more of a questioning poll, i checked out.

I used to be pretty bad at saving, but since I'm trying to move out I try to keep my account around 5k. It's not that much but its more savings than I've ever had as a young man. I'm buying all the things I need and may want before I move out so I'll be able to focus on saving when I am on my own.

I usually keep a stash of cash and change in my house as well. It's almost like a forgotten treasure when I find it.
