Pointless. Anyone can do that if they're willing to just be bored and risk injury. What adaptation is he trying to provoke here? Inefficient and ineffective. It's like a perfect representation of why working smart is better than working hard.

I saw his podcast with Rogan, I'm well aware of who he is. I'm also not a moron who gets caught up in the 'mental toughness' nonsense that a niche aspect of the fitness community seems to be obsessed with (crossfit, OCR etc).

It's this kind of borderline mentally challanged approach to physical pursuits that causes people to get rhabdo and die because 'hurr durr I'm not mentally weak'. It's honestly pathetic that people even revere it.

His approach is not for the vast majority as far as fitness is concerned, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for some of us to use a similar approach in other areas of our lives.

This is my exact point. You are dead wrong. Overwhelmingly, his stratergies are completely unsustainable. In his mind it's 'Go 100%, every day all of the time. If you can't do that then you're worthless'. The guy has VERY legitimate psychological problems, go back and watch that podcast, he is clearly an extremely troubled individual. You want to know what happens when people hold themselves to that standard? They either succeed temporarily and are never happy or they fail and kill themselves because their self-esteem has been destroyed by their own ego.

If you want LIFE TIME INJURIES from pushing yourself to hard training for a race that NO ONE GIVES A PHUCK ABOUT and literally doesn't benefit you in any measureable way then thats on you. The guy is 43 and has already said that he has dozens of injuries. Let's see how he feels when he is 60 and can't even get out of his chair because he phucked his body past the point of no return.

To be fair he's also 43 and looks like he's in his early 20's.

No, I'm not. I have years of coaching experience in behaviour change and well-being and a degree in exercise physiology. I'm actually educated in this field and hold qualifications certified from institutions with legitimate evidence based research.

But by all means go jump on a versa climber for 4 hours and achieve nothing, maybe if you're lucky you'll avoid tendonitis for a few sessions. Seems like a good idea bro

his approach makes me want to go harder at the gym but it doesn't really translate to other areas of life for me. at the end of the day he's just a guy that does a whole bunch of endurance workouts, but it doesn't really motivate me to say study harder or pursue developments in my career

Sorry doctor, I didn't realize I was talking to Jack fukin' LaLanne.

I am impressed by that demonstration of endurance, but I guess anyone could do that...lol

I would love to use a veraclimber btw, but I don't have access to one.

He has run 100 mile races every weekend for considerable amounts of time. He is revered as one of the greatest endurance athletes in his sport. Every sport at the highest level will get you injured.

He's only doing this training to callous his mind and build toughness that's all it is, he doesn't give a fukk about what you or any one else thinks.

I like his philosophy as it's all about pushing yourself and achieving your goal. Imo a lot of people lack drive and don't achieve much in their lives and I think endurance exercise is a good way to toughen the mind.

God the cope is so strong in this thread. He doesn't do it to 'callous his mind' he does it because he uses exercise as a method of coping with his mental trauma from growing up. My point is that his attitude towards physical pursuits is phucking dumb. Ok, yeah he completes 100 milers. So phucking what? Is he delivering something 100 miles away? No? so what precisely is the phucking point. Toughening his mind, for what exactly? What impressive actually valuable to society feat is he accomplishing?

Here is a video of a different athlete explaining a similar concept of using exercise to avoid facing your own psychological issues.

So what's the point in any sport then if it doesn't fulfill a task??? I suppose when he broke the pullup world record what's the point as he didn't actually need to pull himself up anything. He raced ultramarathons to beat his competitors he was racing against...that's how sport works.

He's literally said on record it's to callous his mind but I guess you know differently.

He's toughening his mind to be able to handle anything life throws at him.

Now he's helping CEOs like Jesse Itzler, selling books, doing public talks and helping the public achieve whatever they put their mind to.

I look at what he's done and it makes me realise I can study harder and achieve more and level up my life. Many others see it that way.

Most people have done nothing to help society and when they see someone else doing that they try to diminish what they've done.

He's toughening his mind to deal with previous trauma and to be able to handle anything life throws at him.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this. I'll just say this, survivorship bias is a dangerous thing to ignore.

IMO it has more to do with his background in special operations than fitness. Mental toughness is what specials operations is all about.

He just wants to see how long he can push himself in uncomfortable positions.

Maybe some of his background training has something to do with that...

- Grew up in an abusive household
- Has asthma
- Carries sickle cell trait
- Has Atrial Septal Defect with is congenital

- Completed US Air Force TACP
- Spent four years in the Air Force
- Decided to apply for the U.S. Navy SEALS, however the recruiter warned that a man of his size/weight (280 lbs) would never make it through the Hell Week.
- He returned to apply weighing 190 pounds and after passing through 3 Hell Weeks (failed 2 due to injury), he eventually completed US Navy SEALs training in 1998
- He is the only member in the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEALs training, U.S. Army Ranger School and Air Force tactical air controller training, and has also faced combat in Iraq
- In 2005 he lost friends in the armed forces in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. To honor them, Goggins vowed to find a unique way to raise money for Special Operations Warrior Foundation, providing college funds for the children of fallen soldiers. He Googled the 10 Most Difficult Feats in the World – and stumbled upon the Badwater Ultramarathon (135 miles).
- Since then he has competed in over 50 endurance races, placing in 1st several times:http://davidgoggins.com/athletic-achievements/

But yea, let's talk about podcasts and say how pointless and unsustainable his training is, or how he has "legitimate psychological problems" and is an "extremely troubled individual". It's cute you think he's mentally retarded and doing this stuff is pointless, but I'm fairly certain you would never understand his mindset in a hundred years.

10 men have no business being there
80 men are just targets

- He returned to apply weighing 190 pounds and after passing through 3 Hell Weeks (failed 2 due to injury), he eventually completed US Navy SEALs training in 1998

And after all of that he still isn't happy (his own words). The reason I even give enough of a chit to post what I do is because I followed the 'Give 100% or your worthless" philosophy that he and others suggest for years and it brought me to the brink of a psychological break. It warped my mind so badly that I destroyed several relationships in my life and missed years of enjoyment in my 20's because I had to 'always be working' and in the end it only left me with crippling depression and self-resentment.

You're so sure I could never understand that mind-set despite the fact that for years, that WAS my mind-set. Which is why I aggresively advice people against it. It's an unsustainable, physically and psycholgically masochistic mindset based on a zero sum game you can NEVER win. Thankfully I got the help I needed to regain balance and understand that for 99% of people on this planet that this stuff is not healthy.

If you want to idolize him then thats on you. But to suggest my criticisms have no grounding just demonstrates that you are close minded

No wonder that broke you, that's not his philosophy he tells people

He tells people there's value in being uncomfortable and that's where growth is.

You did it to yourself and now you're angry at the guy.
