Lifting with vs lifting without music

Just rewatching Pumping Iron. They don’t have any music blasting in the gyms. Just the noise of the weights and people.

Compare that to the gym scene today where it’s either the gym blasting some random playlist or everyone has headphones in blasting their own music.

Which do y’all prefer for lifting?
PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.
GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?
GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.
GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.

I prefer lifting without

Although at commercial gyms, the music is generally terrible and I can't stand overhearing people. Listening to my own music helps me from the distractions at commercial gyms.

depends on the environment of the gym. If it's a hardcore gym, I will just enjoy the sound of tons of weight dropping and people grinding - makes me lift harder. No homo.

If it's a commercial gym with betas, i will just wear headphone so i don't have to listen to their crap music or *******s non stop talking.

Depends. With hardcore lifters as my partners, I don't need music. We didn't have music in the football weightroom, for instance. No problem at all.

But lifting by myself with no partner? Fuk dat, give me some headphones and let me zone out for an hour or so. I've forgotten my headphones before and turned around and headed all the way home to get them and came back...they are that important to me while lifting alone.

Since 18 I've lifted alone 95% of the time, and even with other people I listened to music.

It's only in the past 3-4 months I've been lifting regularly with a bro, and not listening to music. And it's fine TBH, but if i'm ever alone, still going to listen to music.

Never lifted with music so don't know what it's like. Besides, I don't like having any outside influence on my workouts. Makes it harder to tell if im making gains or not.
If any of you need to chat, PM me. I'm here for you boyos.

We had music when we worked out in rugby. It didn't change anything for me. If it's up to me than I just lift in complete silence

This.

I remember one time at the gym where the music just stopped and and all I could hear was dead silence combined with the grunts of my fellow gym goers, it was just weird..especially when resting in between sets and looking around. It probably wouldn't be so bad if I had someone to work out with and chat too but none of my friends lift. I need the music to focus, without it things get weird fast for me at least.

I can't even imagine lifting without my earbuds. I forgot them once and walked straight back to my car and drove home to get them. Music helps me stay in "the zone" in a huge way.

The amount of people talking in english or foreign languages, being overly loud, shouting etc drives me absolutely nuts.
I can't focus when i get distracted like that. Not to mention the chit music the gyms play. My last gym had break up songs on repeat. Sometimes the same song 3x in a row.
Maybe back in the days where everyone is serious and quiet, it might be preferred over the same playlist you heard a million times, but i make sure i bring my music every day.

For cardio - audiobooks > music > no music.

Garage gym crew so if I'm not making noise it's just eerily quiet, always have my headphones in. It's whatever tho, wouldn't skip a workout because my headphones weren't charged.

Leaving my headphones at home is the fukking WORST thing. Because then I drive home, and then when I'm home my body kicks into home mode, while on pre, and it results in me having to chit.

I pop my Air Pod Pro's with the noise cancelling feature, and I blast the music. I need to lift with music, because it just pumps me up and gets me going. I can lift with no music, but most gyms always play some ass track over the speakers so I end up always needing headphones.

The GOAT though is an old hardschool lifting gym that plays heavy metal on some old fukking stereo from 1990, and the sound of clanging weights. That chit to me is the best thing, but most gyms aren't like that anymore.

don't really bother myself with music, I find I can still get relatively the same amount of intensity. I'll probably put on some music when going for a max or personal best, might help me squeeze out a few extra lbs or an extra rep.
