ETA I want to be clear, I give my "feminist theory" friends a hard time about their bias, too.

Evolutionary biology, as most people understand it, is almost entirely ridiculous folk science founded on confirmation bias.

If nothing else, most people don't seem to understand that evolution is not teleological.

Responded to this already in above post. Modern science is quite different from ancient philosophy, the major difference being its method for discovering truth/facts.

Repped with measlies for posting this dialogue. I'm curious to find out if the author dissects consciousness as it relates to the development of one's sense of self or if the author is discussing consciousness in the context of neurological disorders.

This will be fun to read through during my morning coffee.

What about Schrodinger's *******? Is OP a ******* before we read his post? Or is he in a superposition of states of *******ry prior to anyone reading his post? Are there hidden variables that determine what his *******ry will be prior to posting? Can his state of *******ry be entangled with another miscer whose dink he sucked? Is their exchange of nudes what Einstein meant by "spooky action at a distance"?

These are still areas of active research in broscience...

While teleological reasoning is often used informally in order to motivate explorations about how to sort the lineages, it is not the core aspect of the science, and more serious evolutionary biologists are careful to avoid such claims or qualify them as necessary.

Science and math are subsets of philosophy.

For example, consider the law of excluded middle. Mainstream math uses the law of excluded middle together with the law of non-contradiction to prove (by contradiction) the existence of some mathematical entities. One assumes the non-existence of X, shows this leads to a contradiction (A & ~A), uses the law of non-contradiction (in other words, one uses ~(A & ~A) to conclude that it is NOT the case that X does not exist, via modus tollens), and then uses the law of excluded middle (in this case, either X exists or does not exist- since it is not the case that X does not exist, then X must exist, by disjunctive syllogism). But why should we accept the law of excluded middle, and its usage to indirectly prove the existence of some mathematical entities? Why does it not make sense to restrict ourselves to proving existence by direct construction? Why not use an intuitionist mathematics? These are fundamentally philosophical questions.

Science too is based on such philosophical underpinnings: in the first place, it assumes there is an external reality independent of the mind. Why make this supposition? Does one sidestep Cartesian skepticism entirely through existential phenomenology (like Heidegger in his Being and Time)? Does one assume this external reality because it is the most parsimonious explanation for non-doxastic experience (aka sensation and perception)(like Russell’s approach in his The Problems of Philosophy)? If so, why should one use the principle of parsimony? Again, all philosophical questions, through and through, that must be addressed (implicitly or otherwise) before one can even do science. This is why science was called “natural philosophy” back in the day. Anyone that is not conscious of this underpinning is in danger of naively interpreting scientific and mathematical results.

Conversely, science and math are epistemological tools one can use to guide other philosophical activities (such as metaphysical reasoning).

The distinction between philosophy and math or science is thus entirely artificial.
