If you can get better than a steady 20% return by investing the money held back by borrowing... then go for it. If not, then it is a bad monetary decision.
The fact that you like bad ass cars doesn't negate lighting money on fire.

IMO the three types of people that should be buying cars outright are poor people, people with bad credit, or people that are rich as hell and the cost of the vehicle means nothing to them.
I think the middle class and/or people buying something that's like 10-15K+ should finance. But it also requires good credit.

Some people will say no but I believe subconsciously everyone gets judged by the way people dress/look/and the things people have or the cars they drive.
That doesn't mean that if you have an expensive car people will think you're successful because there will be some people who think you're balls deep into debt if you have an expensive car, especially at a young age.

Depends on age really and what they do.
I drive a beater rugged looking 01 ram and still get compliments on it but no reason to buy a newer vechile. Its a truck so its very practical and it runs fine. Loud but not too loud too. Forgot what cherrybomb muff i have on it.
if youre a try hard cubecel who makes 30k a year , lives at home so they can drive a mercedez than your a tryhard beta bitch.
If you plaster a bunch of bumper stickers all over then i assume youre a very flamboyant homosexual.

To get happy from a thing, you at least think of that thing, right?
When we are driving, what we think of? We think of direction. We look at traffic lights. We look at the cars around us. We actually spend very little time think of the car itself when we are in the car.
Therefore, I don't think people gain a lot of happiness from the car
A car does bring people some status symbol by certain degree. For example, a rich person probably will not buy a broke down car. They will probably take better care of the car since the car will be parked at the garage when not driving.
Maybe I am being practical, but I will not judge a person by what they drive.

Hard to judge people by their vehicles. I have a old truck that I plan on keeping until it’s no longer fit. Does everything I need and costs me virtually nothing to drive other then general maintenance. I could of bought a new rig when I looked last time but didn’t want to go 60,000 in debt

I built an entire car around the idea of being judged by others.
My vehicle looks all original, sounds original, and is even apparently automatic.
But under the hood it packs 5L of V8 turbo. The rear is a 3.5:1 ratio 32-spline axle independent rear suspension and the car weight is 3000lbs.
expensive cars sometimes try to pick on poor college student. I have something for that now

depends on who that someone is
i'm not going to laugh at 16 year old driving his moms mini van (i was that kid at one point too, we all were)
but if you're 30+ and still driving a 90s station wagon ... move on bro, time to get with the times, because that thing is not getting you laid.
also, on the opposite spectrum, i'm not THAT impressed with your lambo or corvette. The car looks cool, you don't. Big difference.

Then, when the time comes, you sell the chitbox, add the money from that + the money you would of spent on car payments, and go buy a better chitbox.
There is a reason why people like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Warren Buffett drive chitboxes.
There is a reason why people like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Warren Buffett drive chitboxes.
Essentially if person A pays their car off in one lump sum, and person B takes a loan out with the minimum monthly payment, and invests the rest into the market, person B will hypothetically on average come out financially ahead of person A over a timeline.
You can't just insult some other guy if you don't know what you're talking about lol. I get what you were trying to get at though, there are so many people that finance cars they shouldn't. Also, I'm sure that Bezos and Zuckerberg both love fast nice cars like most guys, however they're extremely public figures and their companies performance and public perception rests partially on how they present themselves in public. So it's smarter for them to be somewhat more modest with cars, not because they're "trying to save money" those guys have so much money no car will have any impact on their finances whatsoever. It's public image. Ask yourself this, would you like Amazon more or less if you constantly saw Bezos driving around in a Bugatti throwing money out the window? Even though we know he has it, we'd subconsciously like them less and their legacy might take a hit if they act like that. It's more acceptable to buy epic houses than whip around the streets in some Lamborghini.
On top of that, people who buy those sorts of cars are generally buying it for two main reasons. One, we all love engineering and epic cars that go fast, and two, they're buying them as a status symbol to let people who don't know them that "Hey, I'm successful" etc. Well... the ultra famous ultra wealthy figures you mentioned don't need any sort of material status symbol. People know they're rich and powerful by the flood of cameras following them, their security, and their face alone. You can see Zuck in a 2001 Kia and you still know he's ultra powerful and rich. They don't have any inner need for the cars.
Anyway, onto insulting others acting like you know more than you do

edit: for the record I think I recognize your avi and know you as a good poster, agree with most things you say. If I'm remembering right.

Yes. People judge no matter what. When I'm driving this women look at me and almost automatically trust me it seems.. I also drive a Kia Soul as my commuter car... I do not get the same looks I get when I'm in this. They smile, they acknowledge me, it almost builds a psychological rapport with them instantly. Mercedes.. The best or nothing. It's drilled into their brains.
Also, dudes like it (no homo).. hell everyone likes it.. Had the old lady in the car the other night with the windows rolled down.. younger girl pulls up and says "I LIKE YOUR CAR!" I said, thank you and we drove away from each other. But, I got my girl all riled up about me showing that girl the back seat and shiz.. twas funny.
Ohh.. and yes.. this is a 2008 with 90k miles. A personal friend of my dads is an incredible mechanic who hooks us up like no other if we need it.. It's a Benz so it doesn't need much.. Youtube can tell you anything about any car you can think of. I paid $14.5k cash. It's designo edition paint, sunset red leather, piano black trim. 1/4 mile in 13.7.
Own my home, no debt, don't waste money on drinking anymore.. so I said why not.. I've wanted it for seven years.. Now I have it. The world is yours boyos! Take it.
Was gassing up before hitting the car wash, the night before went out to a friends bday in the country.. got it up to 125.. "America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, badazz speed" -Eleanor Roosevelt

I drive a mid 00s POS tiny enconobox hatchback with 250k miles on it. It's covered in dents because other people don't respect my car apparently, none of the damage I caused. Feels kinda bad man, but I'm happy to have a reliable car. Such is the life of a timothy I suppose

Was gassing up before hitting the car wash, the night before went out to a friends bday in the country.. got it up to 125.. "America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, badazz speed" -Eleanor Roosevelt

Take it.
