Aaaannndd they’re overdoing it again...

“Families of the first four have been able to see their children through a glass window, Chokedamrongsook said.”

Treating them like animals because of supposedly potential for “cave disease”

That’s like literally one of those things you read about having existed once somewhere in the science books and then you overreact like as if 1. They were in a cave 2. They must have it

The logic is just a bit too over the top once again

They've waited this long, better safe than sorry. I imagine their immune system to be shot right now. So it's best to keep the germy families away until they are stable.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

No. It's to keep them away from the families. The boys may have been exposed to harmful bacteria or fungi. Being in isolation for a month doesn't cause your immune system to get shot or anything. Your memory cells last much longer than that.

Recent studies actually showed that some cave bacteria were antibiotic resistant to most known antibiotics. If they interacted with common pathogenic surface bacteria via conjugation and gave them the resistant plasmids, tour's over. It's unlikely, but possible. There are many pathogenic bacteria and fungi that thrive in dark, low oxygen environments and may have been in that cave as well.

As society uses antibiotics more and more instead of allowing the body to naturally fight off the bacteria, bacteria will become more resistant to those antibiotics. As recently as two or three years ago, there was a pretty bad bacteria floating around Louisiana that wasn't able to be treated with antibiotics. First world problems, lol.

What the **** is wrong with you? You must hate yourself to put yourself through that. Chemistry is AIDS, man. Math by itself is hard (but fun), microbiology is hard, physics is math, and **** chemistry in the ass.

That's true, but what is rly surprising is bacteria found in caves that hasn't been in contact with humans in millions of years had resistance plasmids. Some people are saying now that the pathogenic bacteria are getting their resistance genes from nonpathogenic ones in the environment because the rates at which their resistances emerge seem to be faster than you would expect purely due to mutations alone.

Lol all just approaches to the same problems at different scales boyo. Most chit thing about the Chem classes is the labs.

That actually is interesting. I would've figured that the mutations would be faster. See, this is why science is so awesome. It's rare that awesome gets used properly, but science truly is awesome.

Seriously this. They probably don't have any panic left, it's just survival now. The drive to GTFO will overweigh anything else. If you have ever been in a survival situation you know that fear is a constant but no longer influences you that much.

Ya brah...also since the bacteria didn't lose their resistance genes in the cave, there may be fungi that produce antibiotics in the cave...perhaps they could be modified to produce new antibiotics! It's pretty cool stuff.

Yep. Treatments vs cures. Sucks.But there will still be independent university labs that will study this stuff for the chits and hopefully make some progress.

My microbio lab in college

Revolved around taking soil samples at the beginning of the semester and breaking them down to find antibiotics

My class didnt find any but a girl in a previous class did and was travelling around everywhere

I disagree. Hope can be both the most motivating and most devastating thing. They're stuck in a cave for days on end and have little to no hope of being rescued, and then they're found and find that they're going to be looked after, treated, etc. With some of them being rescued, they'll likely have all the drive to do everything that they can to get back to their families.

absolutely. We also have stronger antibiotics that are typically used when others don't work (That "V" one for treating C. Diff comes to mind), so people don't see the need to invest in a new one when the ones that we currently have are typically sufficient. The pharmaceutical industry is ridiculously corrupt, anyway. It'd be nice it'll probably take a truly serious situation for there to be a serious AB movement, sadly.

There is a less than 1% chance of that happening.(of it being funded, I mean)

The safety pin is a one time use needle. Nurses that would be accidentally stuck by a needle after using it on an AIDS patient was, I believe, the main reason for someone inventing it. When the injection is finished, the needle shoots up and is unable to stick anyone again. Manufacturers of the old needles would reuse them after sanitizing them, so it was much cheaper. The companies that made the needles had to completely change their factories for the safety pins.

Yeah, probably so.

So they are all out? Nice. This thread has been an oddly satisfying one due to this end result. It probably would have lasted until October if it had to. My favorite post is still the strategy involving dolphins.

Wouldn't it have been funny--I guess--if the last person was all: "No I am staying! I am one with the cave MUAHAHA! in a Smeagol voice. Then goes onto be the leader of an underground cave society that waits for it's day to surface and take over.

Tours over boyos
"An independent woman is a contradiction in terms. For woman's chief want is to feel that she is wanted. Therefore it is that with women, cruelty is more easily borne than coldness. Indeed, It is astonishing how much downright cruelty a woman will stand from the man she loves or has loved. What women admire is a subtle combination of forcefulness and gentleness. If a woman has to choose between forcefulness and gentleness, always she will sacrifice the latter." - Arnold Haultain
