Assuming there was a guarantee that no one of any importance to that person in any way (family, friends, leaders of their country/area, etc.), 95% of people would hit that million dollar button 10+ times, or a lot more based on what happens in the heat of the moment.

It all depends on how you justify it, but let's say you hit the button 100x for 100 million dollars. So 100 random people instantly dead. If you kept half and donated the other 50 million to reputable charities within your state/province, there's a legitimate argument to be made that you'd be doing far more good than bad despite shelfishly keeping 50 million.

Moral answer, perhaps?

It costs about $3500 to save a human life, per some non-profits, if the money is used wisely. So if you press once, you lose a random life, and save 1000000/3500= 286 people with that money, for a net 285 saved.

Since you have now saved the most cheaply saved people, the next group will cost more to save (not to mention some slight inflationary effect of this newly created $1mm.) Maybe $3510. So now $1mm only saved 285 people, less the one lost, for a net of 284.

Repeat until it costs $1mm to save a single person.

You can save a lot of people.

Ah well. 100,000,000 China men could die and I wouldn't bat an eyelid. $20m would give me and my family a work-free life. Pretty easy trade.

Would contemplate if the 1mil was needed to save the life of someone I knew but most of the people's lives I'd wanna save in order to spare a random life could probably come up with the money needed w/o the help of the button.

Not sure what kinda medical procedure you need 1mil in cash for though.

I would initially not press it for weeks... then realize it's just one person and swear I would only press it one time.

Then I would probably press it like 100 times.

There's a chance that it kills someone who is in extreme pain whether through illness or other means, so out of the goodness of my heart I'd press it probably 100 times. The chance it gets someone in my family is probably less a chance than winning the lottery, so nothing to worry about.

Nice try OP but everyone knows that the Misc is full of socio/psychopaths with little regard for human life. They’d press that button til their fingers broke.

Let’s try this one.... someone offers you $1M to shoot your dog (no one else knows about it... just you and the shooter... and your dog will die 100%). Do you say yes?

I would hit it 5-10 times I think.

Would probably do some math first and figure out how much I would need to have a nice plot of land and home fully paid and then see how much would be needed to stay invested so dividends could be my income source for $100k+/year.

Once, then spend the money to hire an engineer to build me a robot arm to press it 7 billion more times while I travel the world to check on the progress.

Not exactly the most convincing moral argument- killing someone and using their resources to save multiple others. Consider the analogy:

A doctor has 6 patients lying on their death beds, each with a specific organ that is failing (one has a failing heart, one has a failing liver, two have failing kidneys, and two have failing lungs). Is it moral for the doctor to just take one healthy human (say perhaps, you), and kill you, and use each of your 6 organs to save the other 6 people? lol don't think many would agree this is a moral action, and society clearly doesn't think so either (laws).

Some thoughts on the OP:

-Not surprisingly like 95% of the misc seems to want to eagerly press the button. How many of these are self-proclaimed Christians I wonder, hmm. Must not really be that confident in that afterlife heaven vs. hell, because if pushing the button means going to hell, you would have a much, much bigger incentive to not press it.

-I wonder if the amount of people saying press the button would change if, instead of simply pressing the button, you had to literally kill a random stranger walking in the street carrying a briefcase of $1 Mil (with the assumption wouldn't get hurt or caught)- which is really an equivalent scenario, but a little "closer to the action", and I wonder if this would change anything.

-If you believe in strict determinism, it doesn't matter whether you decide to press the button, because you have no choice really. Whether you press that button is simply the result of physical states in the neurons/atoms in your brain etc, it's just a built-in property of the universe.

-It would be deeply ironic if the person hitting the button hit that 1 in 7 billion chance and immediately died when hitting it the first time. The end.

Nah I'm sweet
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

well, fukin, obviously. anonymously pushing a button is complete detachment from it and that's the point

knowing myself i couldn't live with the guilt so i'd probably press it 10 times or something, go do what i want to do for a while, give the rest to family and off myself

Can’t be some random dog. Has to be yours and you have to have had him for at least 5 years. So if you want to do it every 5 years? Sure.
