This is just a matter of definition. Some people in this thread aredefiningsmart to be those people who are out there actively accomplishing things. Under that definition, the person sitting at home lazy, no matter how high their IQ is etc.....is not smart.

But that is just the result of an arbitrary definition of "what smart is" (I dont totally agree with the above definition). No conversation can be had involving terms like smart unless your terms are defined first.

What if I constantly act smart hoping to fool some of the bigger idiots into thinking that I actually am intelligent? Even though I'm aware that my IQ is at least 2 standard deviations below the mean.

Not saying it's my definition, I'm saying some ITT are defining it as so (see post #25).

You seem to be defining smart as "high IQ", and that to me is a joke as well.

It all comes down to one's arbitrary definition of course, so there is no "right" answer here.

In the video posted above (and quoted by me below), Dr. Peterson is actually lecturing about that very topic.

I don't think anyone is arguing that there is a 1:1 relationship between intelligence and success, but there is a strong correlation.
No, it's not the same thing, but IQ is a reliable predictor of success.

If I don't follow any traditional societal paths for success and constantly make horrible decisions that have lasting negative impact on my life but am still successful does that mean I have a high IQ or just lucky?

Iq doesn’t mean chit I’ve consistently tested 130 ish since I was like 6 when my mom made me go get tested.

And I’m dumb as bricks. Don’t know any advanced math, have bad grammar etc.


Also op I’ve noticed you consistently invalidate others experiences and realities if you have experienced something different. Fairly close minded and you seem to perceive your generalizations as absolute truth instead of being open to not knowing everything.

Tip thread comes to mind where you said it’s a complete crock of chit servers can make around 60-70 an hour comes to mind.

This thread is it’s own example where you would immediately dismiss people claiming a high iq on principal because you hold the belief (which is true). That most people who claim it won’t have it. I believe you treat your knowledge like a poker player and just play the odds and refuse to believe the outliers despite knowing they exist, because odds are they aren’t one. However your bound to be wrong eventually with this approach.

To people saying stuff about people who are successful etc makes no sense on the topic of Intelligence Quotient.

Each homo sapien brain is uniquely developed and has various patterns and capacities and efficiencies so IQ is an incomplete way to try to compare different types of brains.

So no success in working or life is not a measure of such raw processing capacity.

In fact some of the smartest people I’ve ever met are quite lazy.

Maybe they are average in success but then if you try to challenge them in a test of intelligence like solving a puzzle, troubleshooting a problem, beating you in a form of 1 v 1 mental competition or their capacity to comprehend new systems of information faster than you they would outperform you do to their higher ability to process patterns In the brains.

If you’re really smart first of all you don’t have to work for another grown man and have a boss tell you what to do. Or some people just have a rich family and don’t need to apply their brain power and choose to have fun their whole life.

Also if you are truly smart you realize it’s pointless to try and life is meaningless and most people are actually try hard low IQ *******s brainwashed by society.

I agree with you OP. There's also a saying that the smallest dog barks the loudest. If you have to constantly claim your something your claim is most likely false because other people would have claimed your statement about yourself to be true without you having to yell it to the world.

I know 3 highly intelligent people and they are all well aware that they are much smarter than the average person. None of them go around saying it or talking about having a high IQ but it's not like they don't know.

You're quite correct.

My intent was not strictly literal, of course. I meant for that line to be taken something like the following:

I am wrong on a regular basis.

Furthermore, it was more of an attempt at mild self-deprecating humor to avoid having to either defend myself against the accusation being leveled at me or having to admit that particular flaw.

I'm not a third grade math teacher. No I wasn't the one arguing for left-to-right multiplication, whatever that means.

My answer was just as valid as the other possible answer though, the way it was written.
