People who Make Claims of High IQ vs. People who Actually Have a High IQ (srs)

I meet people (both on the misc and in real life sometimes) who think so highly of their intelligence, and almost 100% of the time, I just can't reconcile my own observations with their claims.

For those of you who aren't as well read on the subject, let me aware you of the Dunnig-Kreuger effect. Basically, it's been demonstrated clearly that people with low/average IQ's tend to consistently overestimate their intelligence. Look around the Misc and social media in general, and that seems pretty obvious.

On the other hand, the smartest people I've ever known aren't sitting around patting themselves on the back and bragging about their IQ. They read. They write. They build things. There are many different types of intelligence (hope for tradies after all).

But the common theme is that they don't often brag about it or flaunt it; they're too busy doing things that move them ahead of the people who do. Look no further than Socrates for ancient wisdom on this topic. Plato famously recorded Socrates as stating that due to his recognition of how much he still had to learn, that he could not think of himself as being intelligent.

My conclusion: If you are making posts about your high IQ, especially if you really believe in your vast intelligence, you're wrong. It's highly doubtful that you're wiser than Socrates. As such, you'd probably do well to go out and get some exercise (aerobic exercise increases BDNF - Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor), read some thick books, and maybe learn to play an instrument or something (something I can't do myself).

No cliffs.

I've noticed this irl as well. People who constantly have to announce and broadcast how smart they are, rarely are smart. It's like they were given that label as a kid and that became their master status despite never doing or saying anything to actually validate it.

edit: OP, what do you mean by "There are many different types of intelligence"? Wasn't that disproved years ago and chalked up to "talent"? Saying there is different types of intelligence only broadened the definition and made it more inclusive.

So what happens if someone is aware of this phenomenon and know that people with high IQ aren't supposed to say that they have high IQ and then they want to make a self aware joke about that concept....

Yeah IQ is meant to predict success and if you aren't successful then you shouldn't be bragging. If you're successful then you don't need to brag. There's just no actual reason to hear someone talk about their IQ other than them trying to distract from their failures.

You don't really need to take an actual IQ test if you're around 40. You can just compare your income with others and get an accurate account of what the test is trying to represent.

Lol at IQ in general- no one cares about that.

Also so, so many self-proclaimed high IQ miscers in here, but when the simplest problems are posted (we're talking elementary arithmetic, math, or probability problems), these people are nowhere in sight, and the majority of the answers are wrong from the people who do show up. Hmmm......

I can gauge intelligence (however that term is defined) from those types of threads pretty quickly.

"Smart people" go out of their way to improve/challenge themselves, get good sleep, help other people, and want to be successful.

"Dumb people" don't do any of these and just boast about how smart they are with nothing to show for.

Oh and actually, the dumbest people I actually met are the ones who think they're "smart" because they went to school

Oh and also, these people tend to be the laziest and most uninspired people I have met.

Congratz you graduated with a crappy degree like 95% of your generation?

When you reach the level of inspiration that I have posted in the second sentence, then to me, you are "smart."

I consider myself "smart" because I do all of these things. I always work hard towards my studies and career goals, and place those above everything else.

Then I also go to the gym to improve my physical performance and to ensure that I am healthy and don't rot when I am older.

And when I get the statement, "You're smart," I don't tell people "Thank you" or "yeah I know I am smart."

I tell them that all I do is work hard towards what I want to be.

The way I look at it, intelligence is subjective. Somebody can invent something truly genius, truly remarkable and amazing that revolutionizes mankind, but then is a total social retard and dies a virgin.

You have a line of accomplishments, and a line of failures. Everyone has this, regardless of what your IQ looks like. People just try to use IQ as a way to deem themselves superior to others, when really everyone can say something smart and something dumb. At the end of the day, we're all just humans limited to our biology. We're all stuck on the same world, dealing with the same bullchit, no one is a god or truly above others.

One of my nephews is highly intelligent. Well, all nephews are smart, but one nephew is from what I've been told in the running for a National Merit Scholarship. Not entirely sure what that is, other than one has to be very smart to win one. Talking with my nephew one would not know he was as intelligent as he is. He comes across as just a typical fun loving teenager.

The people of around one standard deviation above the mean (~115 IQ) tend to think they are the most intelligent. They're slightly above average, it goes to their heads and they announce themselves as 'high IQ' constantly while deriding the IQ of the average person as being low.

There are a couple of miscers I can think of who fit this description, I'm sure they know who they are.
