HOLY ****, footage released of LAPD killing hostage taker AND his hostage
Investigators on Tuesday released graphic footage of a police shooting in Van Nuys last month that left both a knife-wielding man and the woman he was holding hostage dead.
Calling her death “tragic,” Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore said Elizabeth Tollision, a 49-year-old homeless woman with disabilities that left her with limited mobility, was shot twice as three police officers fired on the man holding a knife to her neck.
The man, Guillermo Perez, 32, was also killed. The police video features footage from two of the officers’ body-worn cameras. It shows Perez holding a folding chair and a knife as he fends off multiple bean-bag rounds from police.
Within a few seconds, Perez grabs Tollison and holds the long, serrated knife to her neck. That’s when the officers fire multiple rounds.
The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. June 16 on the 6400 block of Tyrone Avenue in Van Nuys, outside a homeless outreach center.
Moore on Tuesday said the officers fired 18 times. He said this was the second police shooting fo an unarmed bystander in a hostage situation in just six weeks. Last month, police also killed a Trader Joe’s manager in Silver Lake when a shooting suspect ran inside the store.
The video was released under the city’s new program mandating the Los Angeles Police Department publish video captured by its officers’ body-worn cameras.
The video, one of a handful of “critical incident” videos released so far under the program, was published to the department’s Youtube channel.
The city’s police commission voted in March to require LAPD to release footage collected in such incidents within 45 days. The incidents include all shootings by officers and physical encounters that leave a person dead or seriously injured.

wtf how?
Why shoot? The only reason to fire would be to protect the hostage but they directly shot her multiple times. The police weren't in any danger. This is what happens when you recruit from the bottom rung of the high school graduates

Better shoot her in the head so he doesnt cut her throat. solid logic.
Police need better training. They need a tool they can deploy to subdue somebody immediately without killing them. Like a taser... someone needs to invent a long distance taser or instant tranquilizer..
The scary thing is not all people who have mental breakdowns have a long history of it. They arent criminals, its a crisis that can happen to ANYONE, though the general consensus excludes the self from ever being caught up in this kind of crap. People need to ask what would I want them to do if that was ME as the 'bad man' and not what I want to do with 'them' - the one acting outside accepted norms. Its easy to say shoot them and kill them, but its not easy to say 'end me'.

If the guy slits her throat which was totally possible (guy's clearly a whacko, on drugs, suicide mission etc...) and would have taken less than a second the cops get blamed for shooting too late. If they take him out before he grabs her people will say unnecessary force. It's a tough situation and a no win for the cops.
The only outcome where they don't get blamed is if they only kill the perp. Easier said than done in those circumstances though.

I’m a concealed carrier, and I’d shoot someone if they came at me with even something as small as an x-acto. A well placed knife strike can kill faster than a bullet.
Now these guys have to live with the fact that they were completely ineffective and also killed an innocent person in the process when it could have been stopped sooner. Glad it’s not me.

This is what happens when you preach about "unnecessary" force
This will just be another case study that will soon be forgotten.
"why cant you just shoot their kneecaps with beanbags?"
