Would have been a much better option. Bonded hollow points, which most police carry in their service weapons (the lead core is molecularly bonded to the copper jacket, to prevent fragmentation and jacket separation), open up, mushroom and flatten within the body, dumping all of their kinetic energy into the target without exiting and hitting someone else. They are designed to do just that. Is it possible for one to exit and strike someone else? Yes. But the chances are greatly reduced. The bystander (woman in this case) would have most likely, as in 99%, not been harmed at all in that scenario. Instead, they waited and then fired directly at her, at which point those bullets were just as effective against her, unfortunately, as they were the perp.

Bad situation, but yes, they should have shot him when he was alone.

so basically,

officer with best angle gets multiple shots in on perp, seems to do damage.

second officer, with the hostage IN HIS LINE OF FIRE, figures it's a great idea to open fire too

killing the fukkin hostage.

@ 2:33, first officer with the best angle appears to hit the perp several times. (hotsage collapsing doesnt seem to be from his shots)
@ 3:07 & 13 frames in, you see smoke from 2nd officers gun, the hostage's head bounce around then she collapses.

fukkin sad & stupid all-around. let the officer with the best angle take the shot. Even if deadly force IS warranted, you always take in to account your surroundings. this officer did not.

yeah its a tough job & when chit gets hairy damn near anyone can MMQB it but how can you reasonably say its safe to shoot with the hostage inches away from your target? fkn crazy.

just watched the video and cops handled it poorly. feel bad for that handicapped lady. if the cops was going to fire they should of fired way earlier. when told him to drop the knife many times. he didnt listen AND started to walk towards the cops. thats when they should of fired. not when he went back and put the knife to the lady. arent cops train to not hurt the hostages? seemed like they didnt give a fuk about the lady and just started spraying. its justified to kill that crazy guy....but that lady?

This.. man I’m. It sure how to feel about the cops but it had to be some terrible training. The been bags did nothing, as soon as he made a move to an innocent person or the cops he should have been blown away. You see how quick he was able to wield the knife completely around her neck with a double grip? And them both unloading clips in almost point blank range? There was no way she wasn’t going to get hit at that point. They should have backed off and turned it over to Local fbi people as a hostage situation. I don’t think they were bad cops and had every intention of trying to do the right thing but they should be taken off the police force.

first off, he was hispanic. Cops have zero desire to start another riot. So easier to just shot only when they have no choice.

Yeah sure white woman died but hey - no riots or media making a race issue. That's all PD's and cities care about. So they were probably congratulated for showing "restraint".

restraint = don't shoot the person of color until you have to.

Am I the only one to say this? Cops saw a minority and didn't ****ing fire prior to this hostage situation due to media backlash. Should have killed this dude after the first 5 steps.

Cops likely had poor training to start firing immediately upon grabbing her, though.

Poor work all around.

case of contagious shooting

when the first cop shot (who had a great position to shoot), the rest began unloading when they did not have near as good of a position as the first.

unfortunate situation

should have shot him instead of using bean bags

once the killer with the knife starts walking forward. its time to shoot

once he got close to the hostage, it is a lost fight with the cops and of course... they killed the old lady.

I still dont understand why cops dont shoot him in the legs with their gun before the situation escalates? Why wouldnt this be part of their training in a situation where someone refuses to drop a knife when told to? Especially with innocent bystanders? Any misc cop wanna educate me on this?

Bad split second decision. Can't bring the woman back. The 2nd COP should be 100% fired. Being a cop carries great responsibilities.

Pretty much the world we live in nowadays. Some departments won't even allow a foot chase, unless the circumstances allow it.

Chicago is heading that way.

Good lord, I dont know if its because you're Canadian, but cops don't aim for the legs, you're trained to shoot center mass.

What does my location have to do with stupid training measures? If they simply shot his legs out this situation coulda been avoided, good lord. If he had a gun sure, kill the mofo, he had a knife, take his legs out and go from there, pretty simple solution.

Do beanbags bullet not hurt or something? I've seen a couple vids I think of people just shrugging it off ... Or do they go into adrenaline mode where nothing hurts them, in that case we need stronger beanbags.

Really? I know you mean this as a joke but it's actually really obvious what should have been done differently. It was only one of their mistakes. The second cop should have held his fire. It's as simple as that. He slugged 5 or so rounds at them from a bad angle while his partner was the one lined up to take the shot. He got the old woman in the head, killed her instantly. Very careless and unprofessional behavior, I guess there just is no stopping them from trying to earn their 'first on the job kill' he took his chances, couldn't let his partner show him up like that. A solider would have had the damn discipline to let his buddy handle it.

damn, cops should only have to warn them 2 times (1 time for me) bout dropping a weapon before being able to open fire. This is out of line Cop watch type of stuff that CNN shows ruining the good guys from saving lives.
