Case by case basis. Like you said, some go over the top and some don’t go far enough. 9 times out of 10 this guy is dead or being lit up from both tasers before he has the chance to get back in that car.

Yah I feel the same. How many cops are dying now in the line of duty now because they have images of being the "cop who shot to early" or used "excessive force" in the back of their head that cause them to hesitate? Many of us do not see the dangerous communities that they "serve" every day like they do, and its no wonder that some cops have certain prejudices/stereotypes ingrained in their heads that cause them to shoot early on occasion due to disorientation or a sudden fear that can't explain. On the other hand you sometimes you see some white cop make a ridiculous call almost execution style.

I would have personally done a backflip and kicked the guy square on the top of his head and then thrown the handcuffs on him in one motion with my left hand while my right arm straightens my hair.

Its mind boggling that officers are basically disallowed from using the types of techniques that could actually subdue a guy like this rather than him being able to get up after the taser is off him and easily walk to his car... officers should be allowed to choke until unconscious any suspect that resists to this degree...they were in position to easily apply a rear naked choke and strangle the fight out of this guy, but regulations prevent them from actually using the type of force that is needed at a time like this.

What a chit spot for those two cops to be in, they cant use proper force, and the taser is off, so unless they want to shoot an unarmed man they couldnt actually stop him from going right for his gun and shooting first. If the cops shot him first BLM *******s would have been all over this as a shooting of an unarmed man who didnt do nuffin, and without being able to actually resrain him they cant prevent him from taking initiative and being able to shoot at them first... what a chitshow our police have to deal with to uphold the vows to serve and protect.

Glad the cop lived and seems to be able to function after being in the hospital in a coma for a month, Id be even more pissed off if I didnt see him able to walk and live his life after being put in such a crap situation by the handcuffs society has placed on him just trying to do his job and make it home every night.

That was pretty intense, I commend those two officers. But as soon as the perp reached into his car it was weapons free.

while I understand where you’re coming from, this is part of the Ferguson effect. A reasonable officer would likely agree, especially considering it appeared a gun already fell off the ****bag during the initial struggle(may have been a Backup gun of officers)... but you would still be absolutely chastised for it. Especially if it was determined he wasn’t reaching for a weapon. Subconsciously this effect has some officers waiting a split second too long. It’s bull****

Also, the “officers need better training” bit some people are saying could be true, however if ****bag was on something, that may explain it

Because the public wants police to subdue the most violent, dangerous, and determined individuals out there with rainbows and unicorns and sunshine and never shoot a suspect even when the suspect is literally pointing a gun at them.

Because doing it the right way would have their families' lives threatened by activists and people calling for their head/career/prison time for violating rights.

Because tools such as tasers very often do not work.

And I don't think I really have to ask how you think it would go if they shot an unarmed black man in the back as he casually walked to his car. Next time there won't be a gun in the car, and we'll have riots and violence and then a few more LEO deaths because they can't shoot the unarmed guy in the back (or even the armed guy in the back as he points a gun at them) without big public backlash that fuels more ****heads to attack cops

Think about it if your job could potentially result in you dying, wouldn't you spend extra time shooting and training tactically?
The problem is they didn't shoot when they should have much more than a lack of shooting ability

No doubt that it's hard to detain someone who's resisting with all their might, but 2 officers should be able to handle a guy of average build. I think better training would have definitely helped here, but I'm sure a lot of that gets cut out due to political or financial reasons. This was intense and crazy, and it sucks the officers got shot, but it should have never escalated to that point considering they both had their hands on him at multiple points.

Again, we are only going off of what we see in the video. There are so many things we do not know about the given situation so we can pass whatever judgement we like based on our own life experiences and apply it to what's seen but we still don't know. We don't know what he was on, what he did to want to avoid being arrested, how strong he is, if the department was under scrutiny so they were taking a lighter approach, etc. And even though they are trained, they are still just man and they're also scared because they don't know what a desperate person will do which happened...he tried to kill them. I'm thankful they didn't die and thankful the scumbag is in prison now.

They threw a fair amount of punches, it doesn't seem like punching somebody in the head or even jaw is necessarily an automatic knockout, eh?

Blows to the head with an impact weapon, such as a baton or ASP, are lethal force.

I was confused why the cops kept telling him to get on his back. How are they going to arrest the guy when he is on his back? He needed to lay on his stomach.

That is what I kept wondering when I first started it. Over and over, get on your back, when he IS on his back and they are trying to get his arms behind him.

THAT part definitely makes me wonder about efficacy and consistency of their training.

Yeah, but then what commands you give in these situations is really important, see Daniel Shaver as but one example of the commands giving being really important.

LEO should be trained in using the correct commands in relatively stressfull-ish training scenarios so they say the right thing...not sure why they would ever be using a command to get on your back, in any scenario.

Just seems very out of place.

Crazy.

How could he survive all those taser shots.

And why were those troopers lacking so much training.

Pretty much confirms why nobody wants to be cop, life in danger everyday dealing with criminals and state is forced to hire unqualified cops.

Pretty much confirms why nobody wants to be cop, life in danger everyday dealing with criminals and state is forced to hire unqualified cops.
Because tasers suck. They suck less than pepper spray, but still fail to be effective in plenty of cases.

Perhaps the officers could have realized sooner than the taser simply wasn't going to be effective, but then what are they supposed to do. Use lethal force for a 2v1 with an unarmed black man?

inb4 comments that only professional MMA fighters who are also competitive shooters should be allowed to be cops

Damned if they do, dead if they don't.
