People work full time jobs and don't even make 1/5th of that.

But cooking once or twice per day, and cleaning a house and doing laundry, which can be done in the luxury of your own home, and barely take up anytime at all, and can be done whenever you feel like it, and is easy work... is worth $150k?

Nope

So you'll say "But raising kids is a full time job"... yeah it's a full time job, but they're your kids and it was your decision to have them, and raising them is something you actually want to do. It would be different if you were raising someone elses kids/worked as a nanny.

You're obviously biased in your view, as you're a housewife, and you'll want to argue the point... but it's not worth 150k (by any objective measurement with is relative to what other people with jobs that earn them $150k require them to do)
The revised dollar amount is $113,000.

There's many flaws in your argument. Just because you LIKE doing something doesn't take away that it's still WORK. The location of where the work takes place doesn't matter. And I disagree that housework doesn't take any time.

If your housework doesn't take any time, you're doing it wrong.

I clean my wood floors every weekend. That task alone takes me 2 hours.
Washing dishes = 15-30 mins depending on how many you have (I hand wash everything).
Laundry = easily 2 hours
Cleaning bathrooms = easily 2 hours (I have 2)
Cooking = I spend 1-1.5 hours including prep and serving each night. Half hour in the morning making breakfast.

I can go on. But you get the point. Housework isn't something "that doesn't take any time." lol. Uwot?

It's stupid to call it an "allowance" if she's paying the mortgage with it. She's just writing the check so he doesn't have to do it. If I hand you a hundred dollar bill and tell you to go hand it to that guy over there, have I actually given you anything?

I don't think it's weird if their budget includes a reasonable amount of discretionary spending for the wife. Calling that an allowance would just be juvenile. It doesn't matter where the family's money comes from.

That said though, the only childless housewife in my age group I've ever known ended up shooting herself in front of her husband.

Strong double-dip on that graph.

Live-in nanny would cover a few other slices of that pie.

Like I said in my very first post, dodgy methodology is dodgy. I'm not disputing that housewives bring value to the home, even moreso when they are providing childcare services. I am disputing the ridiculous figure and sketchy "research" methods that arrived at that number.

That's 18.5 hours per week. at 113,000 per year that's 120.00 per hour. That's grossly inflated.

Bro, she spends 2 hours per day cleaning her bathrooms, and 2 hours per day doing laundry (the time it takes to wait for the machine to clean stuff is not work)

The articles are for housewives with kids. Add these costs:

- childcare (includes bathing, homework/teaching, play time) - 8 hours a day (at least)
- buying groceries - I spend 3-4 hours a week doing this.

Yea, I suppose the clothes just walk themselves to the drawers and hangers all nicely pressed and/or folded. Eh?

And yea, if you don't thoroughly clean your bathrooms - you're a filthy buggar. I clean the toilets every other day, the sinks every 2nd day and the showers once a week. Don't forget the floor tiles and mirrors.

Pick a wife that is okay with living a simple life. Instill values in your family to live within your means.

A man shouldn't have to kill himself to support his family. People, in general, should live within their means.

......

Consequently, if both parties work, and they have children - they kill 1/3 of their earnings in buying childcare (daycare is expensive AF). So yes, having one partner stay at home doing all the house duties and taking care of kids is a cost savings for the man/working party - and it reaps the benefits of having your kids raised at home in a safe environment where you can maximize teaching.

These costs are amortized...The water used to bathe is rolled into the same costs as washing the dishes, or you taking a shower. The same with food...The kids eat the same food as mom or dad. These costs are rolled into an entire family cost of living, and not spread out to cover the overhead of someones business.

You also sound like you have some obsessive compulsion issues. I don't know anyone that spends that much time cleaning their bathrooms. Unless you're taking chits on the floor, it's no way it gets that dirty.

Kinda this, Muzzie. Seriously, that's a lot of time spent cleaning. I also remember you saying once you launder things quite often, like comforters or something? Could be mis-remembering that, but at the time I found it odd.

I spend maybe 10 minutes a week 'deep' cleaning the bathrooms, and swipe/disinfect the sink + toilet once a day. I have a stupid amount of hair and two cats and am certainly not living in squalor.

How on Earth are you spending 3-4 hours buying groceries? I drive to anotherstatefor groceries and it takes me under 2 hours.

You don't know my husband. Since he spends equal time in the bathroom as he does on the couch - you can just imagine.

And yea, when I said "housewife" in my initial post - I called out someone who ACTUALLY performs housewife duties and not half-asses chit.

Um, no. Small kids are hand fed. That takes time. They're also bathed by hand and clothed. I'm not talking about water usage here. Lol. I'm talking about the effort to take care of kids and the actual tasks involved.

Let's do an experiment. For all the house chores you do - log your begin time and end time for each thing. For one week, then tally the time. Have your wife do the same. You'll get your total time spent on house chores. It's more than people think.

Again, I work full time and I do house chores. It's easy for me because I've always done it and don't have kids. Even then, I'm completely exhausted around 9 pm each day.

I'll log my time for you and show you. So you don't clean your shower? No scrubbing the tiles in the shower? No cleaning the basin? No cleaning the floors? Dat's gross Jeff.

Yes, I do launder the bed sheets once a week (actually I trade them out for new ones and wash the old) and I wash the blankets every two weeks. Towels, once a week. There's been articles written about this stuff - the germs on sheets, etc.

But okay .. I'll leave it at this. Apparently, I live very different than most miscers. lol.

I think those numbers are probably inflated. You can hire a live in nanny/house-keeper for $300-$500 per week that would do all of the traditional house-wife chores. So a max of 26K per year.

I know a guy that hired a Hispanc live in nanny/house-keeper and if I remember correctly he pays her $300 per week/ $15,600 per year. She didn't have a car so he bought a Toyota Camry for her to drive + pays for insurance + gas. (His car technically but she uses it as she wants). All of her living expenses are covered also in terms of food and stuff like that.

He's a fairly generous guy and gives a $1,500 per year Christmas bonus to her and likely another $1000-1500 or so for her birthday so he's probably coming out to about 20K per year. Its still cheaper then paying for child-care and hiring a cleaning lady to clean his house and do his laundry. + since she lives there he pretty much has 24/7 child care.

Busy guy that runs multiple businesses and doesn't want to run the risk of a wife taking his wealth in a divorce. Cheap price to pay for someone to take care of all the wifely duties aside from sex.

I don't need you to log your time for me - you don't need to prove anything to me or anyone else. I clean my shower - like I said I deep clean once a week. I certainly don't do it every day, I think that's unnecessary. Scrubbing the tiles, cleaning the basins, cleaning the floors every day seems like overkill. Is that what I'm understanding you to say? Now granted I live in a NE shoebox, but still. I know some people that seriously enjoy cleaning and maybe that's you, so more power to you.

Maybe it was the comforters I was thinking of...

Apparently, I live very different than most miscers. lol.
But tasks like bathing, and feeding a child are quick tasks. Aside from the bonding aspect where the parent is entertaining the child, bathing/feeding takes minimal time. Does it take longer to feed and bathe a baby, or an adult? I spend about 7-8 hours a week cleaning. I get home first so I'll spend a half hour straightening things up. Weekends we do laundry, where we wash everything, but these aren't static tasks. Most people are doing nothing between wash and dry cycles, and if i calculated the time it takes to fold and put away all the clothes it would take maybe half an hour. Even if I did log that time, I wouldn't assign a value of 120 per hour...It would be more like 10.00/hr.

Drinking gin and watching Netflix all day is a $72 an hour job brah.

But srsly, if you live in such a big house that keeping it ***** and spam justifies that amount, you almost certainly have a housemaid and also a pool boy, Esteban, you're probably getting railed by.

Live-in nanny/housekeeper for $500 a week? Full time? Where does that dude live? Ohio?

Housekeepers in my area (many of our friends have people come clean their homes), hourly wage is starting at $35 an hour.

RR - yea, probably the blanket confusion.

Fair enough, maybe I just do things differently.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.
