Would ride this out if I was there in OBX. Watching the NC 12 ******** page and they have people working on the roads mid storm. Can’t be that bad. Although that storm surge is scary af when you see those photos

In my home town, not only did the water company shut off the water..
There is a curfew in effect.. The cops are going door to door asking people to leave, and telling them starting today, until who know when. If something happens, no one is coming to help.

I've currently got winds at 12 gusting to 18 mph, expecting max winds of 26 gusting to 39 tomorrow afternoon and pretty much gusts over 30 throughout the entire day tomorrow. Hopefully we don't loose power with that.

At least 150 people were awaiting rescue in New Bern early Friday morning as Hurricane Florence lashed the North Carolina coast with strong winds and life-threatening storm surge.

As of 5 a.m. Friday, 200 people had already been rescued as waters rose on the Neuse and Trent rivers, according to Colleen Roberts, a city public information officer.

New Bern, a city of about 30,000 residents, saw significant storm surge flooding as the rivers overflowed their banks and swept into town. A flash flood emergency was declared in the area that includes Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Jones counties Friday morning.

Good so far. No power for 12 hours. Electric company said about 70% are without and it's not safe to send crews out to fix anything yet. Have a small generator to power the fridge and a few other things.
Drove around a little to assess the damage. The road going out the back way is flooded but passable. The front way is clear. One of my neighbors looks to have a foot of water on the ground floor and high tide is in an hour and a half. I sit up higher than them, though. Not sure how it's going to play out with the rain and the river the next few days but I'm pretty calm about it. Much better than I was yesterday.

and to the person who asked, no sand bags. I didn't think of it beforehand but would've been nice in front of the downstairs door.

If it helps, as I was driving to Atlanta, I saw hundreds of utility trucks driving towards NC/SC. Some even had tank treads and were on the back of flat bed trucks.

I am at work now. Both ways in/out flooded about an hour after I left, going into LOW tide :/ oh well, I brought extra clothes and food and have kitchen, shower, internet, etc. here at work, and 99% chance it won't flood or lose power. Going to catch up on movies and sleep and try not to worry about the house. Probably won't be that bad but nothing I can do about it now.

Yeah, many deaths happen AFTER the storm. Stepping into water with a down power line, getting hit by loose debri, etc etc. People should just stay the fawk still, but being cooped up in the house with no power gets the better of them.

I've always wondered about this... How does it work when a power line goes down into a flooded area or even a lake? It seems like at a certain distance it must be safe. Is it just that you reach a higher probability of being electrocuted as you approach the wire?
